he was an oakland native who shot to stardom in hollywood, but never forgot his roots in town. >> we are all going through something. >> how a bay area music legend is trying to send a message about mental health after the death of actor angus cloud. ♪ [ music ] ♪ he spent years making people smile on fisherman's wharf. how total strangers are trying to help a well-known performer targeted by thieves. instead of moving out. this san francisco neighborhood actually has a waiting list for businesses to move in. hello, i'm sara donchey. if we told you there was a corner of san francisco where businesses are so desperate to get office space, they're in competition with each other.

would you believe us? what if we told you it's become a northern extension of silicon valley with vcs moving in left and right? well there's been a kind of exodus downtown with no skyscrapers, no bustling busy streets is attracting businesses. we're talking about the presidio where vacancies are 5% compared to 35% in the city as a whole. max darrow has more in the city where some are calling sand hill road north and the key to its success. >> reporter: depending on the time of day and what he's got going on, sometimes you'll find cooper in his office or you'll find the ceo of hamilton's doing business a two-minute walk away from his office. >> i take calls out here all the time, standing right here, looking at the golden gate bridge. >> reporter: his company owns and operates apartment communities in 20 states and has been based in the presidio since the early 2000s. but primarily in recent years, he's seen more companies especially venture capital firms moving from downtown and other areas

and establishing their footprint in the presidio. >> it's taking another step forward post covid. i think it's a combination of not just capital companies that are moving here, but also it's the type of space that's available. with this college campus feel and with office buildings. >> reporter: diana simmons, the ceo of presidio trust said interest picked up in 2020 as companies shifted the way they did business. >> we have had so much interest in our smaller spaces that we had to start a waiting list for those offices. >> reporter: simmons says there are more than 200 businesses in the presidio. 95% of the commercial real estate portfolio is currently leased, so there is a 5% vacancy rate. just a few miles away downtown san francisco, the office vacancy rate stands at 31%. >> with open spaces, park spaces, places to do work and team building outdoors, ample parking. we hear from our

tenants that that's something they're looking for, that they actually feel is a benefit to their employees, especially in bringing them back to work. >> reporter: at the restaurant, the growing interest in this corner of san francisco is something he doesn't take for granted. >> we've been very fortunate to be in this great place setting where it is here. >> reporter: the restaurant has been around for seven years. bueno says the increased interest means more foot traffic for his restaurant. >> monday through friday weekdays we see a lot of influx from our office here on campus. >> reporter: his theory for the growing desire to be in the presidio. >> it is just a nice quiet place to get away from the hustle and bustle of other parts of the city. we have ample parking. i think it's a nice settle, safe to relax with beautiful views, great restaurants. >> reporter: as companies are trying to get their employees and tear associates to come back to work, these buildings here have everything that you need to attract your employees

to the office space. >> reporter: while that may be the case, cooper doesn't believe the presidio will replace downtown. >> downtown core san francisco will come back. it will thrive. this is just different. this is unique, it's extraordinary. there is nothing else like it. i'd like to say this is, you know, the future of business. there's not enough space here and there is enough space downtown. the future will be again downtown san francisco and hopefully very soon. >> reporter: but in the meantime he's eager to see how the business landscape in the presidio will continue to change. >> so interesting to see the presidio looked at in this new way. what did it feel like for you out there when you were reporting? >> he said it's a college campus like feel there. you're walking around, the streets are really nice. and of course, you've got tons of people all around as well. you have them in the businesses, at the restaurants, and also out in places like the tunnel tops, which is such a cool spot. >> i know, new, beautiful. and

can the presidio become some sort of new destination? anoa they were mentioning they want more tourists to come in. could it be more of this at some point? >> i think it could. i think the presidio has been somewhat of a bit of a destination for locals and tourists. i mean everybody here in the bay area know it's a hidden gem of san francisco. i think maybe people will start to learn it's not so much a hidden gem anymore. but again like he said at the very end of the story, there is a space limitation in the presidio. so it is never going to be that hustle and bustle that we would see in a place like downtown or another major metropolitan area. >> that's why we love it. great to see businesses coming in. all right, max. thank you so much. one of oakland's most up and coming stars, actor angus cloud, died today at just 25 years old. he was known for his role as fez in hbo's "euphoria." >> i need you to open the door for me, okay. >> i'm not going to help you kill yourself, drew. i'm sorry.

you can't be coming over here no more. >> cloud had never acted before his role as a complex drug dealer whose character had a big heart and a lot of charm. in spite of his troubles, cloud was just walking down a street in new york city one day when a casting scout noticed him. that's how he landed that part. "euphoria" was his big role. his career was just starting to take off. since the news of his death, tributes have been pouring in on social media. kerry washington posted, "you will be deeply missed." and the oakland roots soccer team posted their own message saying they were heartbroken and calling angus a day one fan. mr. fab knew angus posting these pictures of him wearing clothes known from his own line, dope era. >> and i saw the interview like oh, you're from "euphoria," and he's like man, i'm from oakland. and now that's a description of him. he had love

lot of love for him. knowing his status. he was just a good kid, man. like a good kid. >> cloud's family has not yet said exactly how he died, but they noted he had been struggling with the recent loss of his father. mr. fab is hosting a mental health at club dezzy on telegraph. opening a new business is suppose to be a celebration. this one in martinez was not even open for a week when they saw this guy on camera trashing the place. bentley's cocktail lounge just cut the ribbon at their new space at market and main downtown martinez on friday. but surveillance video sunday morning shows a bearded man in a ball cap and hoodie tearing up the patio. he cut the water line, the eat ethernet cable. that's not the

only small business that has hit a snag tonight. ♪ [ music ] ♪ you may not know his name, but if you have been to fisherman's wharf in the last 15 years, you've probably heard his voice. tonight, street performer les edwins thieves have stole what he needs to make a living. total strangers are stepping in to help. ♪ [ music ] ♪ >> reporter: for the last 15 years, this is where you would find edwin doing what he loves, happily performing for tips at fisherman's wharf in san francisco. but just before 3:30 a.m. thursday, security video captures someone taking off with his van. it was parked on his driveway at his antioch home, where he has kept it for years without any problems. in it at least $10,000 worth of

equipment. >> it's gone. some crook stole my van with my life in it. i have all my music equipment, my drums, my computer, my generator, my mics. all my personal affects. i've lost all my music on a flash drive. i had over 3,000 songs. i purposely park it on a sled. >> reporter: the 63-year-old also stayed in the van to cut down on the daily commute. >> i'm not a bum or nothing like that. i have a home, okay. it just makes it easy for me to make one trip. i don't the bridge tolls to keep gassing up. and you're looking at $60 to $70 a day just eating away. he also has to pay for a permit and insurance to the port of san francisco. devastated by the loss, he made an online fundraiser for himself, stating that he needs to work. so far donations have

a life guard found something incredibly disturbing on the beach just a hundred yards from where people were laying out in the sun swimming. they found the man's body inside the 55 gallon drum that washed up today at malibu lagoon state beach. deputies are trying to figure out where that came from. they're not u sure the barrel floated in with the tide or perhaps something else happened. the surfer did report seeing it on sunday, but they thought maybe it was some kind of hazardous material drum and they did not open it. >> they thought they would come out and hang out on the sun and here we are. you can see it from right here. it's crazy. there's a body in there. they don't know. >> the coroner is trying to figure out who that person was and how he died. x no longer marks the spot of the company formerly known as twitter. the new signage

elon musk put up friday to signal the platform's name change is already gone. neighbors immediately complained when it first lit up the mid-market area on friday. the city followed saying the company never pulled a permit to put it up or to take it down today. city inspectors were denied access to the rooftop who said the sign was temporary. tonight, the air outside the vegas casino is even smokier than the air inside if you can imagine. that's drifting in from a 77,000-acre desert burning from the mohave national preserve. >> it looks worse than they were today. they were moderate today in vegas. it does bring back a lot of bad memories from the fire season here of the past several years and all the smoke that we've had. >> it doesn't look like the bay area though. it's very distinct. >> here at home, we are having the slowest start to fire

season in the last 25 years. >> that's nice. >> it's very nice. probably not all that much of a surprise considering how extreme this winter was with all that rain and snow in the landscape. but this fire, that's coming from california, all that smoke. so things are starting to change. first of all take a look at what we've looked like across california and much of the west going back to january 1. it's the slowest start to fire season, and we count that from january 1 to now and for the whole year. look at what the temperatures would been like. the map shows you the temperature ranking. the deeper the blue you are, the higher the risk you are for what has been the coolest start since going back to the 70s. that'll cover the last several months. it's been cool. but within the last several months, we could look at this differently and just look at the last month

within that seven. if we do that, we get a whole different color scheme. now we're looking at the last 30 days. what's happened in the last 30 days has been making headlines nationally. the heat waves of the intensity that's been happening everywhere else. but here, we've been living in a bubble where we have had much experience here. the last 30 days. that was the warmest 30-day period for that part of the state since we started to keep records on this scale that goes back to the 70s. over the last month, things have changed and the landscape is starting to get dried out with a little intensity for the grass and the shah runs, but there is still a lot of snow in the higher elevations. meanwhile here at homed to, we were below average. if you bring in the numbers today, just to see what

arrive after the newscast. thank you for helping us do that. and i think it does kind of set the stage for how this is going to go tomorrow. because concord, you're coming down well below average. and that will switch. we'll do the seven-day forecast. 93 degrees was the daytime high today and look at where concord will be tomorrow, the big drop. you're only going to 80. now look back here towards the end of the seven-day forecast with the temperatures that will be climbing to near 100. if you do the comparison, there's a 20% temperature shift coming our way this week from the 81 on thursday to the near 100 by the time we get to the weekend. so yes, it is going to be below average. that's been really focused on that. but the headline after that is the warmth coming our way by the time we get to sunday. the green layer is coming back as you look at the time lapse a few moments ago. we'll see a lot more than that. it'll last longer throughout the day than it has been lately. so more of a fog type of scenario that's

setting up. that'll help bring the numbers down. that's tomorrow. if you look at the seven-day forecast for everybody now, you'll get more of the micro climate for oakland and in the upper 60s on thursday and warm up to 80 by the time we get to sunday. if you look at the north bay and south bay, same story here. you'll get the dip through here and then you warm back up into the mid-90s for the north bay. by the time we get to saturday, it will be 90 near san jose. for the inland east bay, you stay in the low 90s before we top out. we saw that already. the beaches don't change too much at all. that's the forecast for now. vern, over to you. all right, straight ahead tonight. why the 49ers have a good reason to soak in an epsom salt tub. and help is on the way with the giants in a winning season. what we set the status after an
