this is cbs news bay area with reed cowan. >> we start with a security scare around the u.s. capital, emergency vehicles responding, people told to shelter in place. another big story out of washington dc . >> former president donald trump is facing historic charges related to january 6 and the 2020 election, i'm natalie brand with a preview of the hearings in the nation's capital. good afternoon everybody, let's get started in washington dc where the security incident prompted a huge response, but everything that played out may have just started with a prank phone call. capitol police say there was an active shooter phone call , just before noon, they told people to shelter in place, they sent out emergency vehicles and close to 200

officers had to search all three senate buildings floor by floor. they came out and said they found nothing of concern. they also say they don't have any reports of anybody hearing gunshots. right now we can tell you all the buildings have been cleared. but this comes one day before former president donald trump is due to appear in court in dc following his latest indictment. here is what we know about that, mr. trump has been given the option of appearing in person or virtually tomorrow, however, his attorneys tell cbs news he will be there if security arrangements can be met. they are working that out. >> reporter: security preparations are underway and demonstrators gathering outside the washington dc courthouse where former president trump is scheduled to be arraigned thursday, this indictment related to his actions after losing the 2020 election lists

four felony charges accusing him of spreading lies, knowing his claims were false and along with six co-conspirators organizing fake electors in seven states he lost. >> this is the first time that political speech has been criminalized but this is the first time that political speech -- >> reporter: that defense falls short, says harry littman. >> this will not fly, given the fact as alleged in the indictment. >> reporter: jack smith has yet to charge or even name the six co-conspirators listed in the indictment. >> he is charging trump and trump alone when he could have charged many more. >> reporter: clues in the indictment suggest they could be the potential co-conspirators. >> this may be just a little push toward any of the six to say okay, i didn't name you, here's your chance . come on down. you can cooperate with me.

>> reporter: some legal analysts say the narrow indictment means the trial could happen quickly, possibly wrapping up by next spring. >> several of the defendants were due in court in washington dc tomorrow, as it happens, that is where mr. trump is set to appear at the same time. we can tell you those cases have been pushed to a later date. pg&e is cutting a tree trimming program that is aimed at reducing wildfire risk. the power company says they have more effective ways of accomplishing their goals. the wall street journal was the first to report this shift in how they are going to be doing these things. in a statement, pg&e says they are not eliminating all of their tree trimming efforts, instead, they are eliminating the enhanced program. that program spent an extra $2 billion with the goal of making sure the vegetation doesn't come into contact with any power lines. instead, the company will focus on a new powerline setting in high risk areas, that can cut power to faulty lines in one

10th of a second. we are going to hear from a northbay family whose home burned down in 2017 and why they say they feel less safe after pg&e's decision. cleanup is still going on in this san francisco neighborhood where this fire destroyed a building under construction. this is video after the fire was put out in octavia and oak street in hayes valley, the flames ripped down scaffolding and cracked windows across the street because of the heat. firefighters say this could have easily taken out an entire city block. neighbors told us they tried to warn the city months ago, they feared something like this could happen. they even say they brought up the issue of previous homeless encampment fires in that area. >> we basically got no response. we outlined our concerns that something more major could happen. we don't know if this is a result of a homeless encampment but what we do know is that we've had a string of fires that have caused grave concern for neighbors.

>> thankfully nobody got hurt but a people were displaced. in a statement , the city said they are aware of prior incidents like this in the past, they say they continue to be committed to keeping the streets clean through regular homeless outreach. we know that san francisco's tenderloin neighborhood has a long reputation of crime and open-air drug use and homelessness. now even the people who are most accustomed to it are calling for help. some volunteers who help out in the neighborhood are now scared to go to do their volunteer work. as john ramose is about to show you, they are appealing to city leaders to make a change. >> reporter: outside saint anthony's, they were handing out hot lunches to anyone who needed a meal and although it might be god's work, the ceo says it is getting harder to find the people willing to do it. >> the volunteers do not want to come to us and participate

because it is so dangerous to even walk the streets. >> reporter: the heightened fear stems from shooting two weeks ago on the corner in broad daylight that left a man in critical condition. since then there was another shooting in two stabbings leaving two people dead. even the people who live on the streets are reluctant to come to the area. >> they are really afraid to even come to the dining room during the daytime to have lunch with us because of the situation on the streets. >> reporter: he points to the brazen open-air drug sales as the source of the increase in violence and although his entire mission is to be compassionate to the down and out, he says enough is enough. saint anthony's will meet with the da and police chief on thursday to discuss the lack of public safety and demand accountability. >> how hard can it be, we are three blocks away from city

hall, the police station is two blocks up here, and it looks like this? i can't compute how this can be allowed to happen. >> reporter: others in the nonprofit community agree, the salvation army operates a 110 bed supportive housing complex but the captain is frustrated with the city's practice of putting people into housing without regard to the drug or mental health problems they might be suffering. >> what we are seeing bleed out onto the streets is many of the people are either dying there with their addiction, it is expensive, or they come back to the streets and contribute to things like drug dealing. >> reporter: then there are the kids, the tenderloin is home to more than 3000 children but you rarely see them because it's not safe to play outside. they have a creative writing tutoring program and her students often write about their love for the tenderloin but she knows they are also

suffering trauma from what they see every day. >> i think with the pandemic, things have been exacerbated in the neighborhood, we see a lot more crying and unhealthy behaviors . and it is a problem that should have been addressed a long time ago, in my opinion. because the children have lived here this entire time. >> reporter: these are people committed to helping their fellow man but they see the damage being done by well-intentioned policies and the feeling now is, compassion and reason do not have to be mutually exclusive. >> more of our reporting in the tenderloin is on our website . saint anthony's is working to create what they called the golden gate greenway, the vision is , it'll be a long open space with play equipment to give the kids a safe place to play outside. an oakland artist just painted a mural honoring angus cloud, he died earlier

this week at just 25 years old. this is now up on east 19th street between third and park. the artist said he was already starting another project on the wall when he found out about cloud's death. he said he knew cloud in passing in oakland and some of his close friends even stopped to help paint the mural. >> if this can be positive in any way for anybody that is affected by this, then the goal has been achieved. >> he has created a community touchstone where people are leaving flowers and candles and other items to show their love and support. the artist who made this encourages others to come by and pay tribute in any way that feels good to them. angus cloud was known for his role as fez in euphoria, he never acted professionally before the show, he blew away

calling on taylor swift to postpone her upcoming shows in los angeles, in solidarity with hotel workers on strike in that area. they let an open letter to taylor swift in hopes of bringing potential hotel workers who are asking for better wages, the workers have been on strike since early july. no word from the singer on the calls to postpone but we do know the tour brings a lot of business to hotels. during her stop last week, some hotels were entirely sold out. by the way, are lieutenant governor was one of the people at her shows , and she shared this photo on social media, looks like a lot of fun. good afternoon, we are starting out with a quick and easy overview of how things are going to look temperature wise and we can just skip ahead to what the daytime highs are going to look like for much of the bay as we look ahead to tomorrow. the nice thing is, we are not changing things a lot but the daytime highs for thursday, thlot of mid-70s and upper 80s , or i should say low 80s. this is

pretty much exactly what we are doing today and what we will continue to do through rrow. you can think of today and tomorrow as the two coolest days in this whole forecast, the marine layer is back, that is going to be widespread. watch what happens as we go into later tonight and into tomorrow, we have entered into a much more typical fog scenario for august and as we look ahead to thursday in the afternoon, there's going to be a lot of it and it'll melt back to the beaches as we get into the late morning and early afternoon. putting it all together, here's your take away. there is a warm-up coming , i haven't mentioned that yet. but, if you look at the seven-day, you will see oakland, 81 on sunday, you can really see it when you look at the inland valleys, northbay, going up to 99 on sunday, and you will cool down next week, a lot of mid-80s coming back next week. the two hottest days both happen to be saturday and

sunday. how is that for timing? and it really stands out when you look at the top line, we are in the low 80s today and tomorrow as we saw on the forecast, the inland east bay is at 80 today, you will be up to 103 by sunday. friday is the day you will notice the biggest jump. by friday, the warmth will begin to settle in. and by sunday, it'll peek , still hot on monday and temperatures will cool back down by the time we get into the middle of next week. that is where the first alert forecast stands for now. over to sports, we are counting down the days until the 49ers first preseason game in las vegas where we will get our first look at the team's big off-season edition. here is vern glenn. >> this is the volkswagen red and gold report. >> the 49ers will always wonder, what would have happened last january if brock purdy didn't get hurt in the

a community effort to help raise money for the special olympic athletes in northern california is happening the entire month of august, it starts at the checkout stand at local safeway stores. juliet goodrich got the chance to spend the day with the athlete that loves to compete and loves the fact that her job supports her and other athletes. take a look. >> jennifer hall has worked for safeway for 19 years and she has a lot of personality. when she's not working, she is
