terrifying kidnapping case. a woman says she was locked in a cinderblock cell after being violently abducted. how the suspect could be linked to other assaults. good morning, and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. in what's come to be a film -- a familiar scene now, former president donald trump is expected to appear before a judge today. trump is due at a federal courthouse in our nation's capital to answer to four felony charges that he sought to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election. this comes about seven weeks after his arraignment over the alleged mishandling of nicole d'antonio is in washington with a preview of trump's court appearance. nicole, good morning. >> reporter: hi, anne-marie. good morning to you. and just to set the scene for you, security remains high all around the nation's capital. the security barriers, they just went up overnight, and today the former president is expected back here in washington, d.c., with the heavy police presence for his third indictment this

year. metal gates were set up outside the u.s. district court in washington, d.c., where former president trump will make his first court appearance in a second federal case brought by special counsel jack smith. he's expected to enter a not guilty plea to four felony counts related to his alleged efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election results. >> what the president wants to do is absolutely defend himself on these baseless charges. >> reporter: yesterday the 2024 gop presidential candidate was spotted on the golf course at his new jersey club. trump has repeatedly slammed the indictment as election interference and last night suggested on social media the trial should be moved from here in washington to the state of west virginia. sources say trump's legal team is preparing to argue that the former president's false claims about the 2020 election were not criminal and that he was following the advice of outside attorneys at the time, some of whom are believed to be among the six unnamed co-conspirators mentioned in the 45-page indictment.

trump's former vice president and 2024 rival mike pence gave hours of testimony to the grand jury. >> sadly the president was surrounded by a group of crackpot lawyers that kept telling him what his itching ears wanted to hear. >> reporter: meanwhile, security remains tight at the courthouse and nearby capitol. police are prepared for, quote, whatever might happen. i do want to mention the former president was given the option to appear virtually or in person, but even if he is here in person today, it is very unlikely that we will see him. just to pull back the curtain a bit, there are no cameras allowed inside this courthouse behind me. also, there is this underground tunnel underneath me that can be used to bring the former president in and out of the courthouse. we'll wait to see if he makes comments later today. one thing is for sure, a lot of eyes will be on this courthouse later today. >> definitely. nicole d'antonio in washington. thank you. the man who shot and killed

11 worshippers at a pittsburgh synagogue will be formally sentenced today. yesterday a jury recommended the death penalty. shanelle kaul has reaction. finally, justice has been served. >> reporter: inside this pittsburgh courthouse, victims' families, a juror, even a judge broke down in tears as robert bowers learned he will be given the death penalty. >> anti-semitism and hate have no place in our hearts, no place in our communities, no place in our country. >> reporter: the gunman killed 11 worshippers and injured seven others when he opened fire inside the tree of life synagogue in october, 2018. before the attack, prosecutors argued bowers spent years making anti-semitic comments on line. in june he was convicted of all 63 charges against him, including federal hate crimes. then last month the same jury found he was eligible for capital punishment.

>> for the final verdict in this case, i feel relief. >> reporter: criminal defense attorney joe tamburino says final justice won't be swift. >> every time someone is sentenced to death there will be automatic appeals. so i wouldn't be surprised for a case like this to wind up in the courts for ten years. >> that was shanelle kaul reporting. an oregon man is accused of violently kidnapping a woman and locking her up in a cinderblock cell last month. as jonathan vigliotti reports, there could be more potential victims in other states. >> reporter: haunting photos of a makeshift jail cell where a woman was held captive before escaping. >> the woman fought for her life, beating the doors and the walls of this cell with bloodied hands. >> reporter: fbi officials identify the alleged attacker as 29-year-old negasi zuberi who they say was posing as an undercover police officer when the abduction occurred. he sexually assaulted, handcuffed, and shackled the

woman in seattle, driving more than seven hours across state lines to his home in klamath falls, oregon. >> through her perseverance, she broke free and waved down a passing motorist asking for their help to call 911. >> reporter: the cinderblock cell was built in zuberi's garage. court documents revealed the victim's purse was there, and her blood was found on a fence she climbed to escape. >> the victim's focus, actions, and her will to survive triggered a law enforcement response that may have actually saved many other women from a similar nightmare. >> reporter: those actions and the suspect's cell phone data led police to reno, nevada, where zuberi was arrested. he was with his wife and child. >> we believe there may be more victims. >> reporter: and the fbi has linked zuberi to at least four other assaults and says there could be more. he's lived in ten states in less than seven years under different names. jonathan vigliotti, cbs news, los angeles.

mexico says for the first time a body was found near the floating barrier of buoys installed by texas in the rio grande. governor greg abbott ordered the barriers last month to help deter migrants from crossing the border. mexican officials say they've recovered the body and are trying to determine the cause of death. there had been warnings about the danger the barriers posed. the u.s. justice department is suing texas over the floating barrier and wants it removed. and many americans are feeling the heat this summer as temperatures soar, but a new report finds much of the world has been impacted, as well. according to the science group climate central, 81% of the global population experienced climate change attributed to heat last month. that's more than 6.5 billion people. researchers looked at 200 countries around the world. in ukraine now, russian drones hit a key port city along the border with romania. yesterday's strike in the southern city of izmail damaged

the truck driver and the driver of another vehicle had non-life-threatening injuries. canadian prime minister justin trudeau makes a surprise announcement, and a woman has a deadly accident while working out at a gym. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." "people" says a mother of four died after falling on a treadmill at an l.a. fitness gym in washington state. 36-year-old delrie rosario was working out with her sister last month when she fell on the treadmill and hit her head. her sister says she screamed for help and some people stopped their workouts to rush over, but nobody from the gym offered assistance. l.a. fitness declined "people's" request for comment. the "los angeles times" says a vermont driver was charged in the accident that killed treat williams. vermont police say an investigation determined the 71-year-old actor was riding his motorcycle in june when he collided with another vehicle that allegedly pulled in front of him. officers say the driver, 35-year-old ryan koss, was attempting to turn left into a parking lot.
