results of the 2020 presidential election. trump's comments and what's next. breaking overnight, in a major win for the biden administration, a court ruled that restrictions on migrants seeking asylum at the southern border can stay in place. and spying arrest. two u.s. navy sailors based in california are charged with providing military secrets to china. the sentence -- the sensitive information they're accused of selling. good morning, and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. we start with former president donald trump at the center of another historic day in washington. he appeared at a federal courthouse yesterday to face charges that he plotted to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election. trump pleaded not guilty to four felony charges, later calling it a very sad day for america. nicole d'antonio is in washington with how the day unfolded and what is next. nicole, good morning. >> reporter: good morning to

you. and former president donald trump was in washington, d.c., for less than three hours total. we were out here as crowds of both protesters and supporters gathered outside the d.c. federal courthouse. this morning, the focus now shifts to where we go from here. former president trump is back at his new jersey golf club after a third historic arraignment. in a washington courtroom thursday, trump entered a not guilty plea to four charges accusing him of trying to overturn the 2020 election results in the latest case brought by special counsel jack smith. >> when you look at what's happening, this is a persecution of a political opponent. >> reporter: cameras were not allowed in the courtroom as the former president appeared before a magistrate judge. the defense and prosecutors agreed to allow trump's release pending trial under the conditions that he cannot violate federal law and must appear as required. he is also not allowed to communicate about the facts of the case to anyone he knows to be a witness except through

lawyers. trump is not required to attend the next hearing which is scheduled for august 28th. at that time the judge could set a trial date. the special counsel has said he wants a speedy trial. [ chants ] demonstrators gathered out the -- outside the courthouse as the events unfolded. >> i believe that president trump is completely innocent of all the charges. >> i think he should be held accountable. >> reporter: the former president also faces state charges in new york, as well as more federal charges in florida in the special counsel's classified documents probe. a charging decisions is expected soon in fulton county, georgia, in their investigation into efforts to overturn the election results. so again, the next hearing in this case is scheduled for august 28th. and that is just days after the first republican presidential debate. >> the timing. nicole d'antonio in washington. thank you, nicole. breaking overnight, a u.s. appeals court has temporarily -- is allowing the biden administration to keep

restricting migrants from seeking asylum at the southern border. court granted the administration's request to keep the policy for now in order to maintain order. a lower court earlier said the rules were illegal, and ordered the government to end it by monday. the policy makes it difficult for migrants to be granted asylum unless they first seek protection in a country they're traveling through or apply on line. and we are learning more about one of two people found dead in the rio grande. mexican officials say one of the victims was a 20-year-old man from honduras. as omar villafranca reports, his body was found near a floating barrier recently installed by the texas government to deter migrants. >> reporter: the two bodies were discovered in this remote stretch of the rio grande. the first migrant from honduras was found by texas troopers tangled on the controversial floating barrier buoys. later, mexican authorities found another body three miles upstream. officials are investigating what

led to their deaths. this man spoke to his mother who said he was her oldest son. before he left, she told reporters he gave her one last hug and said "we can't keep starving here. i have to go." mexican officials blame the drownings on the barriers. a spokesperson for texas governor greg abbots disagrees saying, "the mexican government is flat-out wrong. to be clear, preliminary information points to the drowning occurring before the body was even near the barriers." the deaths come less than three weeks after the thousand-foot barrier was placed in the water to deter illegal crossings. a part of governor abbott's $5 billion border security plan, operation lone star. >> too deep. they have a child. officer wenheng zhao betrayed his country, selling military secrets to the chinese government. >> mr. zhao chose a path of corruption, and in doing so he told out his colleagues at the u.s. navy. >> reporter: among the secrets he allegedly sold, details about his post at the naval base in ventura county, plans for this large-scale military exercise in the indo-pacific region earlier this year, and blueprints for a radar system on a u.s. base in okinawa. his contact -- a chinese intelligence officer. in return, zhao allegedly took nearly $15,000 in bribes. >> the scheme alleged here is just one more example of the people republic of china's ongoing and brazen campaign to target u.s. officials with access to sensitive military secrets. >> reporteter: arresteted separy on espspionage chaharges, jincn wei, a 22-2-year-old m machinis mate aboard the "uss essex." he allegedly sold the chinese

because e these lalast 20 yeys arare just t the begininnin. investigators in new jersey are trying to determine the cause of a deadly house explosion. cell phone video shows flames ripping through the house in buena yesterday, about 30 miles west of atlantic city. two people were killed, and two others are missing. a teenager and a 1-year-old girl were injured. police say they're treating it as a criminal investigation. u.s. marines could soon be on board protecting commercial ships, and expelled lawmakers get their seats back. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." the "associated press" reports both expelled members of the tennessee three won back their state house seats. representatives justin pearson and justin jones were expelled from the republican-controlled legislature after taking part in a gun-control protest on the house floor early this year. they were reinstated by local

four years after paris' notre dame cathedral was engulfed in flames, the reconstruction project has taken a major step. carpenters have worked to measure, cut, and chisel centuries' old oak to rebuild the 300-foot spire that was destroyed. workers held a rehearsal to make sure all the pieces fit together. the spire is expected to be back on the cathedral's roof by the end of this year. and cardi b. will not face charges after last weekend's incident at a concert in las vegas. a fan was seen on video throwing a drink on stage at the rapper. cardi b. responded by throwing her microphone in that direction. a woman who said she was struck by the mic contacted police. las vegas police cleared the rapper of any potential charges saying there was insufficient evidence.
