>> announcer: this is the "cbs weekend news," with adriana diaz. good evening. adriana is off. i'm robert costa in new york. an incendiary social media post by former president donald trump has sparked a standoff between him and federal prosecutors. after trump broadly threatened revenge on friday, justice department officials pushed back and asked the judge in the january 6th case to rein in trump. this comes just days after trump pleaded not guilty in federal court over his alleged efforts to overturn the 2020 election. and tonight after the judge gave trump a deadline of 5:00 p.m. monday to respond there has been a flurry of statements from both sides. cbs's christina ruffini is in washington tracking the latest in this legal showdown. good evening, christina. >> reporter: good evening, robert. well, the trump legal team has responded and they've asked for three more days. but this is just one of many legal proceedings the former president is facing as he tries to become president yet again. >> every time they file an indictment we go way up in the

polls. ♪ stand up ♪ >> reporter: simultaneously facing three criminal prosecutions, the former president took the stage in alabama last night undeterred. >> they're trying to make it illegal to question the results of a bad election. >> reporter: also yesterday government prosecutors for the 2020 election interference case asked a federal judge for a protective order to limit what trump can say publicly about the proceedings. they cited concerns trump might share pretrial evidence and his history of making public statements regarding individuals involved in legal proceedings against him. including this friday all caps social media post, "if you go after me, i'm coming after you." >> deranged jack smith. doesn't he look deranged? >> reporter: trump has already directed his rhetoric at the special counsel heading the federal investigations. >> meet the cast of unscrupulous accomplices -- >> reporter: now his campaign has launched a new ad targeting officials leading trump-related investigations in new york,

at the weather channel. >> good evening, robert. a severe weather event is going to be unfolding now here tonight and will continue into early next week. we're kicking things off into parts of the plains, where we may have some widespread damaging winds with clusters of thunderstorms that spread from the northwest down towards the south and east. now, for sunday we'll be focusing in on the ohio valley and the tennessee river valley. the rain may be very heavy and come in rounds, which means flash flooding is going to be a good possibility. and then as we head into monday we kick off the workweek with severe weather mostly in the interior parts of the northeast, but getting close along the i-95 corridor. these storms are going to be riding around our ridge of high pressure, that heat dome, if you will, that just doesn't want to go away. it will be the southern tier of the country where more potential records will be broken. robert? >> jacqui jeras at the weather channel. today in texas there is widespread uncertainty following

a judicial ruling on the state's abortion ban. on friday a texas judge ruled the ban restricted pregnant women with serious health problems. it said doctors must be allowed to treat them without fear of criminal charges. however, the ruling was immediately blocked with an appeal to the state's supreme court. an update now on the murder of a gay man here in new york. last saturday o'shae sibley was dancing with friends at a brooklyn gas station. some men mocked the group with slurs. a fight broke out. the 28-year-old was stabbed in the chest and later died. today a 17-year-old turned himself in and was charged with murder as a hate crime. criminal charges have been filed against the social media influencer whose video game giveaway prompted mayhem in new york city. kai cenat is accused of inciting a riot during the unpermitted event. cbs's michael george joins us now from new york with more on what happened. michael, good evening. >> reporter: robert, good evening. it was supposed to be a giveaway.

kai cenat told more than 6 million followers he was giving $400 playstations away for free. but it went awry, ending with injuries, property damage, dozens of arrests and criminal charges for the popular social media influencer. >> until it's safe. >> reporter: that moment never came for popular livestreamer kai cenat. his unsanctioned video game console giveaway in new york's union square drew a crowd of thousands and spiraled into mayhem. cenat was ultimately slapped with charges including inciting a riot and unlawful assembly. >> the playstations. >> reporter: fans surged cenat's vehicle when he arrived at the park. >> once the people for the giveaway started coming out, that's when like they started to get out of control. >> reporter: police say some in the crowd started throwing supplies from a nearby construction site, lit fireworks, and scaled street poles as 1,000 officers tried to control the chaos.

>> people started climbing up on the subway stations and then people then started throwing water bottles. i had to protect my children. >> reporter: more than 65 people were arrested. about half were underage. >> this is not a policing issue. this is a parenting issue. >> reporter: mayor eric adams questioned if parents knew their kids' whereabouts yesterday and said the city is investigating whether outside agitators were involved. >> you don't come to get free gameboys and bring smoke bombs, and bring m-80s. >> reporter: and police say they're still looking for eight more rioters who they say damaged a parked nypd vehicle. robert? >> michael george, thank you. the latest employment report shows 187,000 new jobs created in july. some experts believe the economy might have a soft landing. lower inflation without a spike in unemployment. jonathan vigliotti is in los angeles. good evening, jonathan. >> reporter: good evening,

robert. hollywood has come to a halt, impacting hundreds of thousands of jobs. other industries have seen some growth, which is helping offset so much loss. >> have you guys been helped yet? >> reporter: with wages up and unemployment at a near record low, many businesses are struggling to fill open positions. >> this year by far has been the most difficult year to try to recruit people. >> reporter: payrolls grew by 187,000 for july. nearly half of those jobs in health care. mostly at doctor's offices and outpatient surgery centers. construction and leisure and hospitality workers are also in demand. analysts say the slow but steady job growth could help the u.s. dodge a recession. >> i think a soft landing has become a -- not just a possibility but now it's become a real probability. >> reporter: still, there's job insecurity in hollywood. more than 700,000 people work in the entertainment industry.

many are now impacted by the writers and actors strike. including chef alex uceda, who feeds crews on set. >> at the end of last year we were working like 10, 11 jobs every day. it drops to maybe one or two jobs now. >> reporter: on friday in what were the first talks in nearly 100 days between striking writers and the studios no deal was reached. >> we're going to have to let more people go in order to keep operating. that's kind of sad. >> reporter: and yesterday's talks did very little to move the needle. even if a deal is reached, it could take weeks if not longer for production to ramp back up again. robert. >> jonathan vigliotti, thank you. a summer surge in gas prices is causing renewed pain at the pump. here's cbs's kris van cleave on what caused the increase and when to expect some relief. >> reporter: summer sizzle burning a hole in drivers' wallets. the extraordinary heat wave that cooked the country helped fuel the year's biggest spike in fuel

prices. >> $65 and what, two or three weeks ago it was like $48. >> from 3.19 to 3.29 then 3.49, 3.59. then today's this. i don't even want to come outside anymore. >> reporter: the national average up 30 cents in just the last 30 days. enough for tammi campbell to feel the pain at the pump in portland, oregon where gas is hovering around 4.73 a gallon. >> it has been a little crazy. it seems like it keeps going up. and then everything's going up. grgroceries. and d our pay jujust kind ofof the sasame. so it's dedefinitely h hurting pocketbookok. >> reporteter: many ofof the nanation's oilil refineries are desisigned to opoperate between and 95 degrees. weeks of triple-digit heat forced some to reduce production. just as saudi arabia cut back on oil exports, reducing global supply and helping drive up the price of crude. >> all of that combined made this sort of perfect storm for gas prices to go up in the way

that they did. >> how common is it for a 30-cent spike in a month? that seems like a lot. >> it is. and usually there is then some sort of other circumstance -- >> like a hurricane. >> like a hurricane or a war. >> reporter: and in the last week ten states saw prices jump by at least 16 cents a gallon. in nebraska it's up 25 cents. iowa 23. minnesota 21. and florida has seen a 19-cent surge. the cost of record-setting summer heat hitting home for drivers across the country. >> they're almost at $4 a gallon. we're at 3.99. not so long ago they were about 2.50 i believe. it's almost $70, $80 to fill up my mercedes. >> reporter: aaa says it is seeing the pace of these increases slow, which gives some hope that we may see a break in prices at the pump come labor day. but there is one big question mark still looming out there and that is hurricane season. a storm in the gulf could see prices rise even higher. kris van cleave, cbs news, washington.
