reunited after being separated by a wall of fire in maui, how people here in the bay area are banning together to help people who lost everything and why some fire survivors say they barely had a chance to escape. from kpix, this is the late news with sara donchey on cbs news bay area. >> hello. i'm sara donchey. tonight survivors of the maui wildfires are returning home to scenes like this, absolute ruins, and some say they got no real warning that the fire was closing in. at least 67 people are dead, making the fire the deadliest natural disaster since hawaii became a state. the death toll could rise significantly when search crews are able to go inside buildings in lahaina. records show there were no warning sirens before people had to race out. instead alerts were sent to phones and tv stations, but the problem with that, a lot of people didn't have cell service or power, for that matter.

>> you'll be okay, milo. >> tonight a denver family is talking about being forced to jump in the water to escape the fire. two brothers and their mom had to wait in shoulder deep water for five hours until it got dark. >> it's just like last resort time because the fire was like across the street like it was that close. so we were like yeah, we got to jump in the ocean. i felt like it was my job to keep everyone else calm because my mom at that point was not doing well, her breathing. i was super worried about her eyes were not good. >> can you imagine that? when they got out, there e was ststi fire all around them, but a firefighter helped them walk to a parking lot where police took them to safety, unbelievable. this is probably where some of those people escaped from. dozens of burned out cars abandoned in the roads, another chilling sign of the destruction that stretches for miles. >> when the mayor said it's all

gone, it's all gone. it's all gone. it's gone. >> tonight one alameda county brewery brought people together with laughter to raise money for fire survivors who have a very long road ahead of them. andrea nakano talked to a couple who just lost everything. >> reporter: i'm at faction brewing and this event is called laughs on tap. part of the proceeds from this night will go to help fire victims in maui. for chris posadas, this is personal. he's one of the comedians on stage and his family lost everything in the fire. >> hey, everybody is okay. they did lose their houses, though, and those houses were terrible anyway. so they're about to get new ones. >> reporter: there were a lot of laughs at faction brewing in alameda friday night. it helped chris posadas take his mind off the devastation in maui. two of his relatives lost their homes in the fire. >> they're safe, but they did

lose both of the homes . >> reporter: his cousin was supposed to welcome their first baby on the day the fire started. instead the due date passed and the focus now is on finding a place to stay. >> everything's pretty much gone and all the baby stuff that my cousin and his wife had is kind of, you know, just in the rubble. they tried to go up to their house to see, but everything's flat. >> kids from those islands, they get to go there as their last stop before they go to juvi. that was that kind of school. i was like oh, it's like being in oakland again. this is great. >> reporter: a portion of ticket sales from the comedy show will go directly to the victims in hawaii. this was the best way to help being thousands of miles away from the fire. >> alameda comedy works, we're a family and one of our family members had the wildfire affect them directly and, you know, it was a no brainer. >> reporter: after seeing pictures of the devastation, there is going to be a lot of work to do to rebuild. money

will not bring back some of the things that were considered treasures on the island. posadas has no doubt maui will get through this together. >> the way that everybody rallies around each other is unprecedented in my life and until i moved there and i saw it for myself. i was like wow, like people can really just open their homes and their hearts to each other and not be with strings attached. >> reporter: posadas says he's been keeping in touch with his family and everyone is okay. the baby still has not been delivered yet. tonight a mountain view family is back home safe after they were separated while on vacation in maui. sean pasin's family flew back to the bay area tonight. >> right side. right side. >> they shot that really scary video on tuesday after they left their 15-month-old baby and 7-year-old son with their grandfather at a hotel and they went out to buy groceries. they

could not get back to the hotel. they couldn't even contact the hotel because nobody had cell service. sean sent us this much happier photo of the entire family in their van after they reunited. that is the same van they drove away the flames with and they had to sleep in that van in a walmart parking lot. nobody has ever been this happy to leave hawaii. >> i'm so excited that they're with me now and, yeah, beyond happy. it's just, yeah, unbelievable. i believe it was an unfortunate thing because they don't happen that open. >> the locals are left to deal with all the damage and loss and red cross volunteers from the bay area are in hawaii tonight. there are more on the way. that includes michelle avril headed out for a two-week deployment. she owns a home on maui and does not know if it is still standing. she has friends in lahaina who escaped with

nothing but their lives. >> it's an extremely special place. i got married there in maui and i just had so many wonderful family memories and i just want to help them heal as best as i can. >> tonight amazon founder jeff bezos said he and his fiancee are pledging $100 million to maui relief and recovery efforts. we have been compiling information how you can help. we've been getting questions from our viewers, so we put this under the top story section on our website, kpix.com. we've now been talking about this for a couple days and i just feel that every time we see more and we hear more stories you realize really how scary and how fast that happened. >> yeah. it's so reminiscent of what happened with the camp fire. it's just something we see in california and it's the same physical process at work, the downslope winds pushing the flames faster and faster. we've been lucky so far the fire season around the bay area and most of california has been pretty tame to this point. as

we head into the weekend, temperatures will warm up. a lot of stuff going on this weekend. temperatures will return to near average by saturday afternoon. that means 60s and 70s around the bay, 80s and low 90s farther inland, everybody within 3 degrees of normal for this time of year. here's the forecast for the closing weekend of the sonoma county fair, one of the many things going on around the bay area. temperatures on saturday topping out in the mid-80s in santa rosa to upper 80s on sunday, even flirting with 90 degrees. of course, it will be significantly cooler at stern grove for the patti smith concert sunday at 2:00, mid-60s, a little more sunshine peeking through the low cloud cover and fog closer to the coast for the second half of the weekend, kind of a mix of clouds can and sun. you'll be contending with the same conditions for the second two of the three days of outside lands at golden gate park, mid-60s saturday and sunday,

just fractionally warmer on sunday. things are looking pretty good for the whole bay area for any outdoor activities, cool by the coast, warmer inland but not excessively hot even once temperatures peak early next week. >> thank you so much. people are packing the streets around golden gate park now with the biggest party in the bay area tonight wrapping up. outside lands headliner kendrick lamar did not disappoint. ♪ >> the crowd was mesmerized and his performance was perfect for the 50th anniversary of hip-hop and that's not all. one of the biggest moments of the day was a dj set by nba legend and now incredible basketball commentator shaquille o'neal. shaq's stage name is dj diesel and he said he was tardy for the show because he was hanging out with steph curry and draymond. warriors guard gary payton ii

also joined him on stain. our betty yu was there most of the day and has all of the day one highlights. >> reporter: kendrick lamar just closed out night one of outside lands now in its 15th year. 75,000 people are expected to descend on golden gate park for each night of the soldout festival. hundreds of dancers let loose at dolores stage. it's this year's newest edition, a queer dance phase featuring lgbtq performers. kaylynn ortega who last attended outside lands a decade ago flew in from oregon for the occasion. >> it's comforting. if there's one thing being here not in the last ten years of this festival, it's nostalgic. >> reporter: well known and up and coming artists spread across multiple stages will entertain crowds for three days. the food and wine are

among the biggest draws. there are about 100 bay area restaurants participating. el loco is one of the festival's longest running participants. >> my mom started selling out of the tender knob what it's called now and we started to expanding into a lot of catering events, farmers markets. >> reporter: the family-run business says it's their biggest weekend of the year in terms of sales and it's one of their favorite san francisco traditions. >> this is actually our own music festival that we do. we've gotten requests to do other festivals, coachella, but we're faithful to outside lands. i think it's just being part of the community. >> reporter: for these san francisco residents, outside lands is the mood booster this city needs. >> i mean if you throw a party for people in san francisco, we'll come. >> we'll be there. i think it's great to gather people and bring good, positive energy in any way, shape or form. so this

is a positive. >> reporter: one of the best parts of outside lands for kaylynn? >> the smell of the eucalyptus trees, honestly. it reminds me of home and i've got goosebumps now thinking about it. it's a really welcoming environment. >> reporter: we heard that the soma tent was pretty fun, but people could only enjoy it for a couple hours. the festival shut it down just before 5:00. organizers were a little vague about why saying they needed to make a necessary repair. the festival runs through sunday, but if you're counting on caltrain to get you there this weekend, forget it. service is suspended from millbrae to san francisco this weekend for electrification work. the a's decision to leave oakland left a lot of people with a bad taste in their mouths, but the team owner won't be tasting anything at a restaurant that just banned him. and a much more beloved bay area baseball figure back in the dugout at oracle park for the first time since 2019. and what better way to show that we are still so clueless when it comes to so much of our

signs are a big part of baseball. players and catchers flash them. fans hold them up and now a tahoe coffee shop posted one telling a's owner john fisher don't come here. the owner of treehouse cafe in kings beach moved from the east bay and wanted to show her solidarity with fed up oakland fans, so she put up a sign saying the cafe has a right to refuse service to fisher or any other member of the a's ownership group. >> i want an owner who wants the team to win. i feel bad for the players to even have to play for an owner like that, you know. so if you're just in it for the money, go sell your

team, make your money, get out of baseball. >> if it feels random, hold on a second because public records show that john fisher's mom owns property just a few miles from the cafe. hollywood may be on strike, but the stars will be out this weekend when the annual perseid meteor shower peaks. you could see 50 to 100 per hour if you know where to look. we posted some tips on kpix.com and in a bit of a cosmic joke about how much we still don't know about the universe, this question mark is apparently just hanging out in space. scientists think it could be a distant galaxy or two galaxies interacting. that also sums up my knowledge. >> bring it in a little closer. >> wait for it, wait for it. never mind. we showed it for a brief second. >> it's probably two galaxies merging, but when you look that far into space, there's all sorts of gravitational lensing. >> not to go backwards in time, but where should we look for the -- >> look to the northeast away

from the city lights and marine layer so you can see the sky. that helps. look to the northeast around midnight this weekend. the weather should be fine. find some of the peaks around the bay area and enjoy the show. breaking stuff in the studio. >> things are dropping in the background. >> let's see what else we can do, friday night, things getting wild around here. a warming trend kicking in this weekend, the remnants of this tropical system eugene trying to send some clouds across the bay area from time to time. any showers or thunderstorms will remain over the high sierra, but the heat will build mostly in the low category for the overall heat risk still on saturday. we'll return to near normal temperatures tomorrow, but that heat risk does build for inland parts of the bay area sunday and especially into monday. monday and tuesday are the warmest days in the seven-day forecast, the hottest for inland parts of the east bay especially, but even then moderate heat risk isn't high enough to trigger any heat advisories or excessive heat warnings. it won't be exceptionally dangerous, just a noticeable increase in temperatures and it's farther

down the line. now the marine layer is still hanging out. the fog is shrouding the top of salesforce tower, upper 50s in the city and santa rosa, otherwise low to mid-60s. the fog will be pretty widespread tomorrow starting the day spreading across the bay through tonight. it backs up out of the inland valleys quickly to the coast, even a little sunshine glimmering through along the coast tomorrow. i think a better chance of seeing more sunshine along the coast on sunday as temperatures continue to build further inland. lows tonight mid- to upper 50s and low 60s sprinkled in. highs tomorrow, everybody within 2 or 3 degrees on either side of what's normal for mid-august. mid-60s along the coast, 80s down the peninsula with 70s on the east side of the bay, mid-80s in the santa clara valley until you go towards morgan hill and gilroy, up to around 90 there. a few upper 80s in the tri-valley, otherwise inland parts of the east bay mostly topping out in the lower 90s. yeah, it's hot but not that hot for this time

of year. upper 60s in san francisco, around 70 for oakland in the east bay with mostly mid-80s in the north bay until you go farther north and inland, temperatures reaching into the 90s, especially ukiah getting up to 99 degrees tomorrow. you are likely to hit 100 degrees for a high sunday. if you're heading out to game two of the giants series against the texas rangers, temperatures at game time, 6:05 evening game on saturday, low 60s, gradually cooling off. i don't think the fog will be quite as widespread as this evening. it's still going to creep in heading through saturday evening. temperatures will warm up to around 70 in san francisco sunday and then staying there monday, tuesday, wednesday and thursday. mid- to upper 70s in that time frame for oakland and the east bay and while it will be significantly warmer inland, but no excessive heat headed our way, upper 80s and low 90s for the inland valleys of the north bay and santa clara valley and in the east bay a little farther into the 90s and a few spots hitting the low

oracle park on friday. simply put, bruce bochy returned. the now texas rangers skipper hadn't managed a game at oracle park since his departure in 2019. >> reporter: when you walked in here today, did you naturally want to walk to the home clubhouse? >> no. i knew which way to go. i knew. trust me. i know this park pretty good. those 13 years impacted me as any time in baseball. i'm forever grateful and thankful for those years. we had a lot of fun, lot of great memories, lot of great celebrations. it's good to be back. >> everyone happy for the return of bochy. they played a touching tribute video at oracle park and boch got a little emotional in the rangers dugout. his pitcher jon gray struck out seven giants, all swinging and he held san francisco to just two hits over seven shutout innings. ross stripling pitching for san

francisco, rangers scoreless through five, but ran into trouble in the sixth. nathaniel lowe takes them deep, puts the rangers on top. very next pitch, another solo homer. that was all the rangers needed. they win 2-1. they'll go at it again saturday at 6:00. the countdown is on for the 49ers preseason opener against the raiders this sunday right here on kpix. remember how the 49ers ran out of quarterbacks in the nfc championship game last season? but had san francisco won the game, there was a contingency plan. kyle shanahan confirmed he had philip rivers on standby and there was a chance he would have come out of retirement to start the super bowl. what a two weeks that would have been. until recently shanahan's plan was top secret. >> was not aware of it. he just told me. past is the past and from here on out just focus on this year. when you guys give me information like that, first time i'm hearing it, too.
