that was it. from cbs news bay area, this is the evening edition. day two of outside lands in san francisco bringing lots of people and lots of business to the city. but not everything running smoothly. the newly expanded robo taxi is having trouble with big crowds, stalling out and even causing traffic issues. >> said they've got some kinks to sort out, i would say.

the death toll from the valley fire, amounted to the deadliest in the u.s. in a center as emergency crews push into the devastation. good evening, i'm brian hackney. >> i have andrea nakano. day two of outside labs wrapped up not too long ago. tens of thousands of people now try to get home from golden gate park. the three day festival drew some of the biggest names from the music industry. today's headliners included the foo fighters, lana delray, and many more. to the big talker, other issues with self driving taxis trying to take people home last night, cars were stalled in the mizzy middle of busy streets. that's meant more traffic for everybody. the state utility permission gave permission for both crews and way motor start charging for their rights. >> more on what they're doing tonight to avoid similar issues. >> reporter: as you can see, there is like one , two, three, four crews cars blocking . no

one can get through. >> reporter: witnesses said they were about 10 driverless cars paralyzed on two narrow streets, in san francisco's north beach neighborhood friday night around 11:00 p.m. >> it makes you feel horrible because people can die. if there is an emergency, the emergency vehicles cannot come down through. i mean, run to those cars. >> reporter: longtime northeast resident jeffries view . he said the cars were disabled for about 15 minutes. >> i was warning people because people from out of town did not know these cars didn't have no drivers in them. these cars have no drivers. these cars have no drivers. and i was screaming that out my window. >> this is what our country has come to. clean the outside lands music video created wireless connectivity issues, causing delayed connectivity to their vehicles. it is actively

investigating and working on solutions to prevent this from happening again, and apologizes to those impacted. >> i talked to cruise today and they said there exploring creating their own cell phone system. that is not what happened overnight. hundreds of more cars on our street. they should take a time-out and a pause until they perfected this technology in a way where people won't end up burning to death or getting injured. >> reporter: supervisor erin whose district includes north beach says right now there are about 600 driverless cars between cruise and waymo . there have been about 50 documented incidences of interference with first responders on thursday, a witness captured a cruise car blocking a fire truck at an active scene at 24 and valencia. adding that the fire truck was forced to back up so the vehicle could move. >> this is ground zero in the united states of america for testing these vehicles. and we are all learning what the

experience is together. we are asking them to work with us in a responsible way that benefits the public. >> reporter: this tourist from new york also witnessed friday's spectacles. >> so they got some new kinks to sort out, i would say. so it is not an efficient way of getting around. it is a novel way of getting around. >> we don't need them here. we did find before they came here. outside land had to shut down its tent for a second then row because they're having trouble with the floor. no further details on exactly what the problem is that is video from yesterday's show before it was shut down around 5:00 in the evening. >> the festival is celebrated its 15th anniversary. during that time it has brought in $1 billion to the city, and a lot of that goes to small businesses that manage to get

a spot at the event. prioritizes local vendors but getting a spot is not easy. a booth can cost up to $30,000 for the weekend. the festival draws about 70,000 people per day. potential customers that small businesses meet especially for those struggling in the cannabis industry. >> they might do half a year, a years worth of business and have exposure in a way that they wouldn't have in any other way in their static little place. and if they couldn't afford to get a booth, then they would need to have this opportunity. >> it is predicted this year's festival will attract more than 220,000 people and it ends tomorrow night. raging fire gutted the 88-year-old indian theater in pittsburgh this morning. the building had been abandoned. nobody was injured but crews did have to evacuate nearby residents. they were able to get it under control and avoid a total collapse. there is no word yet on a possible cause. also following a vegetation

fire that broke out earlier tonight in livermore. this is near callier canyon road. alameda county fire tweeted that it is about 15 acres at this point and that multiple crews are on the way. now to the fire in maui, the death toll stands at 89. making it the deadliest disaster, not only in hawaii, it is the worst fire in the u.s. in more than a century. hundreds of people remain unaccounted for tonight . leaving officials worried the death toll will continue to rise. tonight, emergency workers continue to sift through what is left of lahaina. >> jeff nguyen begins our coverage from maui. >> reporter: the death toll is expected to climb following tuesday's wildfire. state and federal teams are going building to building searching scorched neighborhoods of for the remains of those who never had a chance to leave. officials say most of the confirmed dead or trapped while trying to escape on foot. others died in their cars. this woman picked up another woman and her tortoise as she tried to outdrive the flames. >> it was just a very

apocalypse situation. so i was just in survival mode at that point. once i saw the smoke billowing down, that was enough for me to be like i need to focus on getting out. >> she saved my life. i just can't believe how lucky i was . >> the inferno wiped out 80% of lahaina. it incinerated more than 2200 buildings , mostly residential, leaving thousands homeless. >> we are the only things we have now because everything that we had [ crying ] >> reporter: people here in maui are anxious, they're trying to get back into their homes to see if they are still standing. they are also demanding answers as to why hawaii's extensive system of warning sirens never sounded. >> it was fight or flight with no warning whatsoever. >> reporter: people say they never received a single text alert and many lost electricity so they had no access to radio or television. officials say the power was never turned on but likely knocked out by the wind. hawaii's attorney general has ordered a comprehensive review of the critical decision-making made before ,

during, and after the disaster hit. but for these residents go, that is too little, too late. >> there is some good news, we have been following the passive family from mountain view all week, they were separated from their children during the fire, they eventually reunited with the kids and the grandparents and are now home in the bay area. sean pass and was kind enough to give us an update on how everyone is doing. >> they seem to be enjoying home, enjoy the moment it seems like they're getting more and more back to normal. for me, i'm just going to provide space for they can talk and it is okay to be out okay. >> reporter: they were separated for more than two days before we united. >> maui is also struggling with a huge economic toll. could top 5 1/2 billion dollars. tourism accounts for nearly 80% of the income on that island. >> everyone who came here, it was her happy place and now everything we knew , can't go

to the gelato shop anymore, can't go to the abc stores, can't go to the bars we used to go to. such a big sense of community and although we still have that sense of community it is not going to be the same for a while. >> reporter: during the first half of this year, maui had nearly 1,000,000 1/2 visitors, that is a third of all visitors to the island chain. those to risk spent 3 1/2 billion dollars. >> relief keeps pouring into the island, as well, new video today showing the latest hall of much-needed essentials being dropped off. it is not only supplies that are making their way to maui, volunteers are arriving to help. duane, i left oakland airport today. he has already made one trip to maui since the fires. now he is headed back to try and help hawaii residents access government resources. >> will be there on the ground , as well as providing whatever support they need. financially, emotionally, spiritually . whatever we can do. going

through all that, we will get through, what we need to because of the grace that god has upon us. >> reporter: duane says supporting his people with love is the foundation of his relief efforts. the bay area low hot festival , turning today's celebration into their own relief drive . the help of a local olympic figure skater. da lin has that story. >> reporter: some of the folks working the booths have families affected by the maui fire's. they say this is not the time to grieve. that will come later. they want to use this venue to support first responders. among the thousands of people working and attending the bay area low hot festival is jasmine contreras. she flew out of hawaii friday night and flew back to her bay area home saturday morning. >> she was in hawaii visiting family and working for the hawaii chamber of commerce of northern california foundation where she is a board member.

>> it knocked out cell coverage of people, you couldn't hear from anybody. you just didn't really know what was going on, so i found out later in the week that we did, unfortunately have someone who passed away. that was rough. still not , it's surreal, and it is how can we help the rest of the family? >> her uncle died in a car trying to escape the flames. she is turning into strength. >> how can i be helpful but not a hindrance? >> she is exhausted from the flight back. no way she will miss this opportunity to rally the bay area to help survivors. >> if i can divert any attention back to the people who need help, i want to do that. >> organizers noticed an increase in foot traffic at this year's festival compared to last. the annual aloha festival is a celebration of the pacific islanders culture, featuring hawaiian music, dance, and food. but the tragedy is also bringing organizations together as a

festival to talk about long-term relief efforts. >> we are based in hawaii, part of a larger group called the hawaii community foundation. and they are taking the lead and collecting the money, doing a plan and getting the funds attributed. >> reporter: among those raising awareness is former gold medalist olympic figure skater, kristi yamaguchi. >> it is kind of a home away from home for us. we owned property there in the last 10+ years so it is so gutwrenching to see. >> she believes her condo may still be standing but not 100% sure. she says that is the least of her concerns. she is focused on helping families that lost loved ones. >> it is going to take decades, i think, for this recovery and rebuild. and we definitely want to be a part of that. >> reporter: jasmine says as her large family copes with the loss, she is touched by the generosity of so many who want to help. >> it is great to hear that

students across the bay area are starting to head back to school . there were several schools apply giveaways in san francisco to get kids ready to learn. the golden state warriors held their back-to-school event at thrive city for tracy jackson davis held giveaway backpacks filled with supplies and volunteers at lyman memorial in san francisco, also major kids were ready for school. >> i am also an educator so i know a new backpack with supplies goes a long way. and it is very expensive for people to buy that on their own. >> volunteers at l.i.e. prepared more than 300 backpacks for students and families. you almost got me, you said showers and i was like oh my goodness, we're going to get rain. >> someday, but meteor showers,

every year about this time, the perseid meteor shower, the earth intersects the tail of a comet. yeah. >> it is going to be fun. >> the dust and the ice produced little zipping meteors in the sky, peaking from midnight to about an hour before sunrise. >> did you say somebody ardent already started seeing? claim a friend of mine in santa barbara. great meteor. as we build up to the peak hours between like midnight and 4:00 in the morning. i am sure you will be out there. no really, it is quite a thought, if the weather cooperates. but that is a big if. down in san jose, things are pretty good. skies are clear, temperatures are mild. in the east bay, could be very nice, the numbers tonight are in the mid 60s for overnight lows, daytime highs in livermore, 92 in san jose, got up to 86. tomorrow it is going to be in the mid-to-upper 90s and parts of the east bay even as it remains cool along the shoreline, pacifica hates 67. that is for tomorrow. right now it is still balmy and 71 degrees , great meteor shower watching weather. except that

you do want to be away from what you see in this picture. all of the city lights. the farther you can get away from not only the low cloud but all of the city lights, the better view you will get. being too late to go to this year, you will the east have to be away from the clouds or you're going to be out to lunch on the meteor shower. might have more details on that. a little bit later meantime, it is warmer tonight at this time than it was last night. numbers are up by about five to 10 degrees in most spots. and there is a warming trend this weekend as uncharacteristically high temperatures building in over the pacific northwest coupling with a love that is around vandenberg. and that love is going to produce some high cloudiness over the bay area periodically over the next couple of days. that is the perfect corridor for any

moisture down south to head north into northern california. so it shall, or afternoon you can see the high clouds stream over the bay area the monday. we actually get another shot of it coming in late tuesday and wednesday so from time to time, few clouds passing overhead, and the low clouds at the shoreline are going to be with us, as well. winds? yeah, but not strong enough to really influence the high temperatures in the east bay tomorrow. pretty cool sea breeze for tomorrow afternoon. weather headlines, sunshine this weekend except at the coast where it is foggy, foggy coming in over the bridge. it will be warmer next week. numbers near 1degrees. we will stay dry in the long-range. overnight lows tonight, mild inland, mid-60s. and daytime highs for tomorrow, from 94 at morgan hill 266 at half moon bay, fremont, 88. it will play with century mark at antioch and pittsburgh, brentwood hits 100 degrees. 96 at livermore. of the north bay it will be warm . 87, canfield, 82, and 90 in sonoma. still, it is warmer in ukiah, 101 at ukiah, extended

forecast shows a warming trend, peak days are going to be tuesday and wednesday. not only for san francisco and oakland, but also for the north bay which tops out near 90 on tuesday. and even warmer than that in the east bay, the two warm days of the week are going to be tuesday and wednesday

if you got the weather for, the most robust meteor shower of the year is due tonight. the perseid meteor shower, what happened every year at this time, when earth's orbit intersects debris in the tale of, swift huddle, i think i said this a few minutes ago. the earth slams into bits of dust no bigger than a grain of sand, and they burn up in the atmosphere, you see them as shooting stars. the best viewing starts now until before dawn tomorrow morning. the best way to view the shower, you got to be away from city lights. you don't need a telescope or binocular's, you got to look out to the northeast sky and you've got have dark skies but is safe, you don't want to be out there in the middle of nowhere with nobody around. bubble up with somebody warm.
