to have you both. this may be the third or fourth time i have had you . >> we are happy to be back. >> we are glad of the work you do in oakland. >> we have been doing this work for 35 years and it is the belief that we are responsible, one is responsible for one's thoughts and feelings. if anything happens to us or we engage in any type of activity, we are responsible for the outcome of what happens. this is something that the asian people said we are our own enemy and friends sometimes. it is much easier to finger-pointing and blame somebody. we are on the phone

and something happens and we will blame the people who designed the iphone. >> good point. >> we use creativity and worked one power individuals to be self-aware , inspired to the arts so we use drumming, fashion design, as well as visual arts as a medium for healing and bringing healing to the community. it is for individuals, groups and organizations. currently we are working with kaiser hospital doing wellness breaks for their staff. the staff comes to the center and the drum for an hour. as a means of focusing on creating healing. we also use art . visual arts. people come together in a design murals and eight implement it and put up the murals to beautify the community. >> we will hear about the drums

later but tell us about the schools . >> we do side-by-side learning as well as afterschool programming. it is around equity and justice and we use art as a means of helping young people to say they can change their lives and they can reinvent themselves to solve problems in the neighborhood . there is a curriculum that is used in it is embedded in the curriculum and the young people use art and visual arts as well as fashion design for learning math, for learning reading. there is a reading component to it. young people learning skills. >> this is a great introduction. we will hear more about it in the next sent good. continue to join us in

luther king jr. services, for 14 years you would start with that. and once every fourth friday , the last friday of the month you have mindful drumming. where is that located? >> 378 west street oakland, california. about 10 years ago wrote this book called mindful drumming , ancient wisdom. what it is, truly assists people to build community. 25 years ago started the center in oakland and we were offering this. people are dying because we look different or somebody looks different. recent issue is when the police officer killed this young man in ferguson.

created mindful drumming for people to come together. >> can anyone do this? >> yes. you don't have to have rhythm or be a musician. it is amazing. we have more women come to do this than men and sometimes they drive very fast, 60 or 70 miles to come. >> tell us beyond fear, the book he wrote. >> we wrote beyond fear in 1998 and it was a tool we felt that as americans, we really wanted to begin to see the we are all human beings. we spent a lot of time looking at the 12 principles of the healing that the essence of being is love. why do we fight each other? why do we want to kill

each other because i don't look like you are speak like you are have the same religion you have? the whole focus of beyond fear is to look at ways we can begin to move beyond fear so we can begin to understand as human beings we all have the same issues. we all breathe and believe. when you are cut everybody's blood is red. >> scriptures tells us that perfect love casts out fear. >> that is the purpose of beyond fear. it is relevant today. you can visit our website, and you will find this book as well as the superhero and you can look at mindful drumming. beyond fear is so important. just as important now as it was in 1998 as it was in 1898. >> great quotations. >> also exercises in the healing of yourself and see

who you are and what you have and who you think you are is no different than someone else . >> the international organization is about 40 years old but you are about 25 . >> we are 25 years old. we are member centered with international centers around the world. working with children who are life threatened. the whole idea around looking at the principals of attitude and making sure they are practiced. a poet said, fear is the cheapest room in the house. it is where we go to in the cheapest way to deal with issues. >> excellent. in the next segment we will talk about the 25th anniversary coming up at

and every culture uses the drum for the same reason. ritual and ceremony. our friends took us to colorado to see dinosaur footprints that left a footprint 100 million years ago. was very powerful is the fact that the dinosaurs footprints demonstrate that they walk in music. common time. and we walk as humans in common time. the reason why drumming is truly important is i believe

that because we carry an inner drum is a heartbeat for example if someone is traumatized or they are afraid, right away they can put their hand on their chest to feel the heartbeat. so they can feel their inner drum and make the connection and to make a connection with the inner drum. and if they do it correctly , they connect with god -- >> and the mind. that is what is mindful. as you were talking, it came to me. >> this is why drumming is more important than we realize. mindful drumming sometimes people think about mindful drumming is a very unique way of drumming because the

rhythms are synchronized and for example the other day we were talking about imperial penguins. when they consummate the relationship they get into synchronized dance. to check one another out and to make sure they will be in this relationship for a very long time. that is the wisdom of drumming. it is really important. i encourage my friends to have a drum in their house . even if you don't drum, all drums fall at the same principle. >> you mentioned the penguins. one of my favorite movies is the march of the penguins. >> people can watch it in

there is another movie called winged migration. where the birds fly from canada to brazil. they all fly in synchrony. >> let's not leave out the 25th. >> getting ready for the 25th anniversary. we envision a peaceful world. for 25 years we have focused on loving our communities and using love is a metaphor for bringing people together. the 25th anniversary we will be at scott's pavilion. we will have a wonderful jazz band . some young people who grew up in the organization -- we will have mindful drumming and we will have young people

. you will see some of the things they have been doing and we will have shout outs to many friends who cannot come like marianne williamson. >> matthew fox? >> we will do shout outs from him we are asking jerry brown to do a shout out. he gave us a letter when he was mayor of oakland acknowledging the good works we have been doing. we are excited and it is time to celebrate . 25 years is a long time to spend creating avenues for young people . >> with the schools and city. and all the different organizations. a lot of work. >> in the fact we are looking at bringing people together. focus is collective impact. no one individual organization, no one religion can solve the problems that we have in our world. it will take all of us coming together and have a collective impact. and if we could just learn , because we are. we can learn that we are

evidence in court. drumming is very important and -- >> we have just a minute left. anything else ? >> people can always come and visit us. the last friday of every month we hold a mindful drumming. the last wednesday of every month we host a racial healing dialogue and also if you want our services, all you have to do is call us and we do workshops on attitudinal healing and we do leadership work . we have a leadership course that we focus with low income families to really learn about their own personal power, civic engagement, getting them registered to vote. service learning. all these wonderful things . there is so much we are doing. >> we are glad you have been here and i am glad you are my friends i cannot wait for you to go to africa again. >> november 15th at scott's.
