we're on the ground in hawaii with the latest on the search and rescue efforts. indictment latest. former president trump's legal troubles mount following new criminal charges in georgia. when he and allies are expected to turn themselves in. and taylor swift psychology. a university announces a new class that will study social phenomena associated with the singer's biggest hits. good morning, i'm wendy gillette in for anne-marie green. we begin with hawaii which is grappling with the worst natural disaster in its history. the full extent of the devastation from last week's wildfires is still being uncovered as the death toll topped more than 100 people overnight. that number is expected to rise in the coming days as the national guard continues to search for victims in the scorched ruins. jessica kartalija is there in maui with the latest on the island's recovery efforts. jessica, good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, wendy.

those recovery efforts are going to take quite some time, but it's really the emotional toll that we are seeing here on the island where people tell us they are still in shock. news cameras followed fema teams on their painstaking search and recovery mission in west maui. >> if we don't do our job, then the families can't get any closure. we just push through. that's all. >> reporter: this wildfire survivor is hoping his stepfather's remains are at this forensic facility. >> i just want to identify his body and put him at rest. >> reporter: the lahaina bypass road will open during the day, allowing residents a chance to temporarily return home. >> we're trying to get back to normal so that people's lives can begin to in some ways be reconnected to the other side of the island. >> looked like a movie. and then plenty black smoke coming out. >> reporter: armando haro and his family escaped but lost their home in the inferno, now living with relatives on oahu, some unsure if they'll ever

return to maui. >> there's a lot of families still not together, and so we'll take what we have. we're blessed. >> reporter: the governor has asked the state's attorney general to put a stop to outsiders coming in and snatching up land from the local community. he says it's also something that he's discussed with actor dwayne "the rock" johnson who spent part of his childhood here in hawaii. >> the rock, who also was sharing his desire to see this land stay in the hands of the people, we agree completely. >> reporter: hawaii's governor spoke with president biden who plans to visit west maui in the coming weeks. and you can really feel the sadness here on the island. there's also this overwhelming sense of family. you know, people here in maui refer to their friends as uncle and aunt, and they say they can feel the love coming in from around the world with all of the support. back to you. >> hawaiian spirit. jessica, thanks. much of that damage we saw

there was in the historic city of lahaina, but the raging wildfires have wreaked havoc across a wide area of maui. just 25 miles east in kula, crews are still battling smaller wildfires that have destroyed at least 19 homes. lilia luciano reports on the heartbroken community. >> reporter: in kula, this is the land where a home stood just last week. >> we fortunately got out alive. you know, in the -- before the fire came. >> reporter: were you able to salvage anything? >> nothing. nothing. we came -- we came back the next day, and everything was still on fire. >> reporter: her family's survival is the only solace. >> everybody's struggling here as it is, living day by day. but they still give, you know, they still want to help. >> reporter: kula residents jack swink and aaron mcveigh and their roommates built a brigade of hoses with neighbors to save their block. >> we're still on edge.

court documents unsealed yesterday reveal that special counsel jack smith's office obtained a search warrant this year to gain access to trump's twitter communications including private direct messages. trump was indicted on federal charges earlier this month. on monday trump and 18 allies were also indicted in georgia for alleged election interference in that state. nikole killion has more on the defendants and the charges. >> reporter: the 98-page indictment was handed up as cameras rolled. it contained 41 felony counts listing former president trump and 18 other defendants including members of his inner circle, former white house chief of staff mark meadows, and ex-personal attorney rudy giuliani. district attorney fani willis gave them ten days to surrender. >> the grand jury believes they were part of the illegal effort to overturn the results of georgia's 2020 presidential election. >> reporter: the indictment says the activity began within days of the 2020 election.

willis used georgia's racketeering law to accuse trump and his associates of conspiracy. >> some of those acts may seem quite innocent in and of themselves, but they are each steps according to the prosecutor to show a pattern of activity that is, in fact, composed of ultimately of crimes. >> reporter: the court filing cites 161 separate overt acts ranging from lying to state legislators during a series of hearings at the georgia capitol to creating a false slate of electors and severe harassment of election worker ruby freeman. in a pair of truth social posts, trump renewed claims of election fraud in georgia. the indictment also references trump's phone call to georgia's secretary of state brad raffensperger which sparked willis' investigation. >> i just want to find 11,780 votes.

>> reporter: raffensperger said the most basic principles of a strong democracy are accountability and respect for the constitution and rule of law. you either have it or you don't. >> that was nikole killion reporting. in virginia, the mother of a 6-year-old boy who shot and seriously wounded his teacher pleaded guilty to felony child next elect. prosecutors will not seek a sentence of more than six months in prison for deja taylor. a judge could impose a longer sentence. the boy shot the teacher in a classroom of students. abby zwerner filed a $40 million lawsuit against the newport news school system for allegedly ignoring warnings the boy had a gun. for the first time since it happened, north korea is acknowledging that a u.s. soldier ran into the country across its heavily armed border last month. north korea says private travis king told officials he was disillusioned with the inequality of american society and racial discrimination in the army. state media says king wants to

seek refuge in north korea or a third country. a defense department official told cbs news the u.s. can't verify north korea's comments and is focused on king's safe return. king was set to leave south korea and be discharged from the army after spending time in a south korean prison for assaulting two people. russian officials say its defense systems destroyed three ukrainian drones in the western region early this morning. meanwhile, in ukraine, president volodymyr zelenskyy met with troops on the front lines in the country's southeast area yesterday. ukraine is in the middle of a counteroffensive against russian forces in the south. zelenskyy acknowledged the operation's progress has been slower than desired in the almost 18-month war. four australian surfers are safe after their boat went missing off the coast of indonesia. three of the surfers were found floating on surfboards and rescued about 38 hours after their wooden boat disappeared on sunday. another surfer who went looking

those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." the "los angeles times" reports a new firearms report casts doubt on actor alec baldwin's account in the deadly shooting on the set of the movie "rust." baldwin has said he did not pull the trigger on the gun he was holding when it fired during rehearsal in 2021 killing the cinematographer. a recent report from a firearms expert said the trigger had to be pulled or depressed enough for the gun to fire. prosecutors earlier dropped involuntary manslaughter charges against baldwin. a special prosecutor says a formal announcement on whether to re-file any charges against baldwin is forthcoming. espn says a tennessee couple is accusing former nfl player michael oher of a shakedown effort. oher who inspired the movie "the blind side" is suing the calm -- the couple. he says they lied about adopting him and tricked him into a conservatorship in 2004. he says they made millions of

look at who wanted to be a part of the action at an east tennessee high school football field. the head football coach at gatlinburg-pittman high school captured this video of a black bear galloping across the field. he posted it on social media with the caption "just another day in the smoky mountains." the bear had trouble finding the way out but eventually left after about ten minutes. a good sign for the economy, plus your chance to score a free meal at taco bell this month. shanelle kaul has those stories and more in today's cbs "money watch" report. >> reporter: u.s. stocks dropped today as grim data from china set off concerns about the global economy. the dow lost 361 points, the nasdaq was down by 157, and the s&p 500 lost 51 points. new consumer spending data from the commerce department shows retail sales in the u.s. rose for a fourth straight month. american shoppers spent the most on dining out and back-to-school shopping in july.

security guards at paris' eiffel tower found two american tourists sleeping off a night of drinking. the duo allegedly hopped security barriers on sunday night after legitimately entering the tourist attraction and then stayed in an area usually closed off to the public. police said the two men did not pose any apparent threat, but they were brought in for questioning. 20th century fox and its parent company disney are being sued for allegedly cheating a movie financing company out of money. tsg entertainment claims accounting tricks were used to cheat it out of hundreds of millions of dollars. tsg says it has invested more than $3 billion in 20th century fox films such as "avatar: the way of water" and "the shape of water" since 2012. the striking screenwriters resumed in-person talks with hollywood movie studios yesterday. writers were responding to the studio's latest offer which was presented to them on friday. insiders tell hollywood news website "deadline" that the talks ended with mixed results. no word on when the parties will meet again.
