we are here at james lick high school right now, the stabbing took place at about 11:30 a.m., there is a widely circulated video that a student apparently shot of the incident on the basketball courts on the other side of campus and this video does show at least some of the altercation, we don't know what happened before or after the video. here it is. the video shows what appears to be groups of boys fighting on a basketball playground. >> they are going around the back. >> punches and kicks are flying but at some point, two victims

are stabbed according to the police and transported to a nearby hospital, the site was eventually broken up by high school staff members and the suspects could be seen running away. >> i heard about it through the intercom, they said code blue, that means lockdown. and some friends told me that a kid got stabbed. >> reporter: the school went on lockdown for at least a half an hour until the police could arrive and secure the scene and the safety of the other students. >> i guess it was a little bit scary, the fact that we have that going on in our school, but it was happening all the way across the campus from where i was, so it wasn't near me so i wasn't concerned for myself. >> reporter: classes were canceled and students were let out one building at a time, parents were notified and rushed to the school to pick up their students, some could be seen embracing after what was after all a traumatic day at james lick high school. >> i think it is sad and heartbreaking. i think we should be safer.

>> reporter: police continue to investigate and look for suspects . apparently i just checked with the san jose police media relations, apparently suspects have not been arrested, so they are searching for anyone involved but as you can tell from the video, there are multiple people fighting, so it's difficult to say who attacked to or how this got started. but on a campus this size with students coming back after summer break, there might have been some altercations that might be lasting from the last school year or maybe something just happened on campus that prompted this. but police aren't getting. >> you are a graduate of james lick high school , and i'm curious, are you surprised when you heard that something like this happened at your alma mater? >> reporter: yes, surprised and disappointed, schools in general have changed so much since i was in high school, there are shootings at schools that are unfortunately very

regular in this country. there's also code blue, that every student knows about. the students who were in school today had probably been through a code blue at least once before. so unfortunately, violence is around us, but when i was here, there were fights to be sure, but i never had a stabbing like this, let alone two people being stabbed at once. >> conflicts have escalated in recent years. thank you so much. the death toll from the maui wildfires stands at 111. only a handful of those victims have been positively identified. survivors have been showing up at this temporary morgue, searching for closure. in the meantime, the attorney general has just ordered an independent review of the

emergency response. earlier, emergency management officials defended their decision not to activate warning sirens. >> do you regret not sounding the sirens? >> i did not. >> so many people said they would have had time to escape, had the siren going off, they would have known there was a crisis emerging, and as we know, so many bodies were found in the ground. >> let him finish his answer. >> emergency management officials went on to explain the sirens are primarily used for tsunamis to warn people to seek higher ground. they were concerned if the sirens did sound, people would have gone toward the fire instead of away from it. regardless, we have learned some of those sirens were not even working. in the bay area, community members are mobilizing to send help to hawaii. shawn chitnis shows us the efforts today in the north beach neighborhood.

>> reporter: we have seen a steady flow of donations coming in all morning and that is keeping the international warehouse union workers busy. they are happy to do it. take a look at this shipping container they are going to be sending to hawaii, that is already about 80% full. the focus is on the priority items that they need for the people on maui. that is because it is going to probably take about a week went once it is ready to get over there, so they need to think long term for the items they are focused on right now, tarps, baby supplies, shovels, hygiene products as well as animal crates. while we were here this morning, we went and met a woman who is visiting from san francisco, she felt compelled to come over and give money herself. >> it's just awful, what happened to them over there,

accused of shooting a police officer in san jose has been identified. police say 44-year-old, gabriel carreras ambushed officers yesterday as they responded to a domestic violence call that he remains in custody. the officer is in critical but stable condition. san francisco is calling on the state to reverse its decision on driverless cars, last week state regulators approved the expansion of robotaxi rides within the city, the day after, almost a dozen crews cars blocked traffic in north beach when they stopped and totally lost connection. city officials including the city attorney filed a motion to pause the expansion. we'll have more on that decision at 5:30. a driver has been arrested in connection to the tragic crash that killed a four-year-old girl in san francisco. her parents were pushing her in a stroller near fourth and king tuesday night when an suv hit them, kelsi

thorud reports the accident is sparking conversation about what can be done to make the intersection safer. >> reporter: as people cross the same intersection where the day before, a four-year-old child was hit and killed by a car, many were hearing of the tragedy for the very first time. >> this is the last thing that any parent would want in the entire world. >> reporter: he was taking his son to his very first giants game. he said learning what happened has him even more alert when navigating the downtown streets. >> the intersection where the crash happened is within eyesight of oracle park. thousands of people cross the road before and after games, many said the area can feel unsafe. >> we have a lot of positive changes in the area in general. >> reporter: in their organization, which looks to

promote safe pedestrian travel within the city has worried about the stretch of king street for a long time. >> anybody who knows that intersection knows it has so much going on, and there's not enough protection for the people to keep them safe crossing the street. >> reporter: it's not just this intersection that has issues. she says on average, three people are hit by cars while crossing the street in san francisco every day. that's why her organization is lobbying city officials to do something. >> we think streets like this need to be more narrow, there should not be two turning lanes at the same time, that is very dangerous. >> reporter: they are advocating for no turning on red for cars at big intersections like this and slower speed limits. those are steps they believe that can help prevent such tragedies like the one we just experienced. >> they plan to host a demonstration next week to call in city officials to improve state street safety for

in fremont, after decades of manufacturing jobs heading overseas, we are seeing a turnaround. it's all part of a green manufacturing boom in the bay area. >> reporter: at 60 years old, alex gonzalez has found a new career. and he is enjoying the ride on a wave of green energy jobs coming to the city of fremont. >> i got this job almost six months ago. >> reporter: alex works on the assembly line at the plant that builds devices to control the movement of solar panels so they can track the sun all day. >> i'm very happy to help in this environment for the energy, the green energy for the people.

>> reporter: alex was recently hired by a manufacturing subcontractor for the company which designs the solar devices called next tracker, both companies are neighbors in the city of fremont. >> three, two, one. >> reporter: together they celebrated the grand opening of this massive assembly plant near the fremont automall. >> we are at ground zero of the re-industrial revolution in clean energy, right here in silicon valley. >> reporter: the opening of the plant adds to a growing list of companies in fremont led by tesla. >> there are over 900 manufacturers in the city of fremont, we are proud to have the most manufacturing jobs of any city in california. >> reporter: the fremont mayor said jobs have been created that have a future. >> particularly supporting minorities and women to get them the skills they need. this is critical in this moment,

while we are trying to figure out the next phase of the workforce. >> reporter: alex, who used to work for a defense contractor said he got technical training and went back to school at a community college to prepare himself for his new career. >> i just wanted to tell the young people to keep going to school, this is a great environment to be in, like an electronic technician in the bay area, i'm very happy and proud of myself. >> reporter: after decades of losing jobs to other countries, companies are once again seeing advantages of building locally such as fewer supply-chain issues from overseas and tax breaks that come with recent legislation such as the inflation reduction act. one of the big questions is still one of the oldest ones, can companies find enough qualified workers? >> the companies expect to hire 80 to 90 assembly workers over the next two years as the factory ramps up.

we are following breaking news, chp and fremont police are busy getting a possible freeway shooting, these are live pictures from our chopper over 880 near thorton, the driver told authorities they may have been shot at but they were not injured. the chp has closed the offramp as they investigate. we will bring you updates as we get them. onto the weather, first alert weather day, you issued an advisory for hurricane hillary, a hurricane advisory in california? >> there hasn't even been a tropical storm that has been a tropical storm strength or greater to hit california since 1939. this one could be, it is still conditional because there's a lot of cool water in the path of this storm before it reaches southern california and that is where the focus of this storm is going to be for our neck of the woods. let's take a look at the latest stats on hurricane hillary, it is at 110-mile-per-hour sustained

wind, if it strengthens a little bit more, it is going to become a category three storm and it is tracking to the north over very warm water, a category two will become category three later tonight, then it'll spread right along the coast of mexico, right along baja california. still category two by sunday morning. look at the temperatures in the background, not nearly as warm near the coast, which means the storm is going to be weakening significantly as it makes its way to the north. it will make its way into a tropical depression by the time it makes its way to san diego and los angeles. will it be at tropical storm strength as it approaches? that remains to be seen. either way, it'll bring a significant flooding threat to the state, we can track the amount of moisture that is going to be heading in our direction, all of the bright colors are surging up into southern california but mainly staying to the east of the bay

area. so we have the possibility for pop-up showers and thunderstorms next week, and more additional cloud cover. in the short term, we are still going to see the showers over the next 24 to 48 hours, temperatures near average by friday, a little bit cooler for the inland parts of the bay area then we warm up on saturday and of course we are still tracking the potential impact of hillary. a couple thunderstorms out there right now, one in the diablo range, drifting toward alameda county. that is where most of the activity is going to remain, the eastern fringes of the bay area for the rest of this evening and into tonight. beautiful blue skies over san jose right now, just a little bit of cloud cover in the distance, temperatures in the 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s you temperatures tonight are going to drop down into the 60s reflecting the muggy atmosphere right now, it felt a little gross inland today, of course closer to the coast you have that onshore breeze. high temperatures tomorrow very close to average, 60s and 70s

along the bay, 80s in the santa clara valley and mostly 80s in the east bay returning to near average for at least one day , then the temperatures are going to have her just a little bit above average through the weekend and into early next week. despite the additional cloud cover, we will see the clouds from hillary and still a muggy feel to the atmosphere. the shower chances are remaining low for sunday, monday and tuesday and we should be getting rid of hurricane hillary as we get into the midpoint of next week. one place we will not see much change, along the coast, in the 60s for the next seven days. thank you so much. the 49ers returned to levi's stadium saturday night for their second preseason game, this time against the denver broncos. vern glenn is looking ahead to the matchup. >> this is the volkswagen red and gold report. >> the question on everyone's mind before saturday's
