rescue group that brought them here despite their own overcrowding. from kpix, this is the late news with sara donchey on cbs news bay area. hello, i'm juliette goodric in for sara donchey tonight. millionsin california are under the state's first ever tropical storm warning as hurricane hilary churns towards mexico's baja peninsula as a massive category 4 storm. cabo san luca is nearly deserted tonight. restaurants are empty, sandbags are stacked, and the seas are already looking rough. the stor is projected to make landfall halfway between there and the california border. and while hilary won't keep hurricane strength, it's expected to dump a massive amount of rain in southern california starting on sunday. some places could pick up a year's worth in just days. right now, people from san dieg

to los angeles are preparing fo the worst. >> reporter: southern californi is taking advantage of the call before the storm, building berm to protect beach communities from high surf. cal oes is tracking the storm from sacramento to see where it land and where to send help. >> throughout the next few days over the weekend, we'll adjust our responses accordingly. >> reporter: meanwhile, the coast guard will respond by air and sea as long as they're able >> during a time like this, our search and rescue capabilities will degrade as the storm worsens. >> reporter: people in palm springs are bracing triple digi heat to fill sandbags in the middle of august. the inland desert could get a year's worth of rain in just two days. >> this is some weird weather for southern california. >> reporter: landslides are a huge concern in the hill, especially near mountain burn scars and coastal areas damaged in the winter storms. in santa

barbara, the talk at the docks is sunday and monday will likel be days off from doing business >> yeah, we'll just hunker down for a few days. >> unimaginable, but comes with a lot of warning. paul is here now to track where hilary is now. >> yes, at its strongest point it will be for the rest of its life cycle. still hanging on to cat 4 strength. mercifully, it will weaken, but the wind strength determines what category it is and if it's a tropical storm or hurricane. still 130 miles per hour winds right now, and eventually will turn north carrying it away fro the warm ocean waters that's th fuel for these storms. it's carried north, and grazing the baja peninsula. both the interaction with the cooler ocean temperature and interaction with land will help to weaken the maximum sustained winds down to a category 1 hurricane by early sunday morning. then, as it tracks north, it will likely still be tropical storm crossing from

baja, california into the state of california with 65 miles per hour sustained winds around the center of circulation. that's determining whether or not they're a tropical storm or hurricane, but they both contai copious amounts of moisture. let's look at the warnings in effect. tropical storm warning from sunday into monday for southern california. again, the first time that's ever been issued for any part of california. they've already had flash flood warnings in the inland desert earlier today and will see more into the weekend. flood watches in effect for mos of southern california. over si inches of rain in spots. for th inland desert, that represents not just a year's worth of rainfall, but potentially two t three year's worth of rainfall falling in 36 hours or so. >> that's what i believe. give that timetable of a year. >> packed into that short amoun of time. >> thank you. the last tropical storm hit

california in 1939 dumping 11 inches of rain and wind gusts u to 65 miles per hour. the storm flooded beach communities and washed away homes from huntington beach to malibu. the la river spilled its banks, and downtown was under three feet o water. 93 people died. presiden biden says his administration i keeping a close eye on hilary, and fema already has a team and supplies ready to go in souther california. meanwhile, the the presiden and first lady touched down in reno just a couple of hours ago for a week long stay at lake tahoe. the bidens will go to maui on monday to survey the fire damage and meet with residents. tonight, 114 people are now confirmed dead in the maui fire with hundreds still missing. te days after the flames erupted, recovery teams are still fannin out across lahaina searching fo victims who couldn't escape. just hours ago, the governor of hawaii addressed the state for the first time since the tragedy. >> friends, this loss we have

passengers landed at hayward executive airport. 40 cats and dogs from the maui humane society. these animals were already in shelters or foster homes on the a at the time of the disaster. >> when the fire happened, we knew we needed to do something. because all the shelters were full, it would be a bigger project than just one organization. >> reporter: jeffery, the executive director with berkele humane, helped organize a coalition of six local animal welfare groups to help transpor shelter animals to find new loving homes in the bay area. they partnered with greater goo charities to arrange the flight the shelters here are already full, but jeffery says collectively, they can absorb the extra animals to create roo for an influx of injured or displaced pets on the island. >> by moving those animals here that gives the animal welfare teams in maui the opportunity t

take a breath, regroup, and start building the long term recovery programs that people will need there to take care of their pets. >> reporter: friends of the alameda animal shelter say they're full to the brim. >> we have a handful of kennels available that aren't occupied. we rely heavily on our foster community to get them into home until we can get them adopted, and even that is becoming stretched. >> reporter: next weekend berkeley humane is hosting the single biggest adoption in the state and most fees will be waived. >> it makes me feel very proud. we don't get into animal welfar to do anything other than save as many animals as we can. >> this is really important wor that we do. this also gives us an opportunity as a coalition t come together so that if there are more disasters in the area in the future, we are better

the weekend. the major impacts from what's now hurricane hilary. will eventually bring rain and wind to southern california as a tropical storm. rain, flooding, and power outages look likely, but minima impacts in the bay area. maybe few passing showers on monday, but the rain chances are in the 10 to 20% range. we'll look at futurecast and take you through the next few days. tomorrow the clouds and fog begin the day pushing into the labor inland valleys, but backing up quickly to the south, the moisture is surging north with what will still be at that point hurrican hilary. 5:00 sunday morning, it's at the coast of the baja peninsula. it doesn't make its

way into california until later in the day sunday. here's the really heavy rain surging in throughout the day sunday. the strongest winds are sunday afternoon into sunday evening, especially to the right of the center of circulation. the 50 t 60 miles per hour gusts certainly enough to cause some damage and power outages, but the flooding is the primary concern. the moisture lifts to the north and disperses a little. any impacts around the bay area will be kind of the left over humidity in the atmosphere. it will feel muggy. a chance of a few hit or miss showers. maybe a pop up thunderstorm, but at the the bulk of this one will miss us. widespread amounts in southern california of two to four inche of rain. estimates of seven to ten inches of rain on top of a landscape that really can't absorb a quarter inch of rain leading to flooding issues. thi
