the historic storm and life-threatening flooding. biden in maui. the president is headed to hawaii today to survey the damage from the devastating wildfire and meet with first responders. we're on the ground with the latest recovery efforts. and spain reigns supreme. an exciting final match. we show how spain nabbed its first ever tournament victory. good morning, and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. we start with tropical storm hilary slamming southern california with high winds and torrential rain. it's expected to bring catastrophic flooding to large parts of the region. adding to the severe weather was a 5.1-magnitude earthquake that hit the area sunday afternoon. we have the latest. michael, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. here in san clemente about

60 miles south of los angeles the rain and wind picked up at about 6:00 yesterday evening. the first tropical storm to hit california in nearly 84 years have not an impact here -- and across many places in the southwestern united states. there seems to be no good place for the water in the desert. torrential rain swamping roads and trapping cars. >> we've had storms before, but never anything quite this windy and rainy at the same time. >> reporter: palm springs is under a state of emergency with hilary dropping half of the city's annual rainfall in just six hours. in the higher elevations of san bernardino, trees and mud rushed down canyons. residents in several mountain and foothill communities are under evacuation orders. juan fejar and his mother left their home as floodwaters current higher. -- crept higher. near the coast swollen rivers in los angeles are running full and fast. in santa clarita the side of a road collapsed.

near san diego giant boulders crashed onto an interstate. adding insult to injury, a 5.1-magnitude earthquake hit southern california sunday afternoon. hilary is expected to continue pounding southern california throughout the day, prompting los angeles and san diego school districts to cancel classes. >> stay safe. say informed, and stay home. >> reporter: nevada's governor issued a state of emergency calling up the national guard. in yuma, 60 mile-per-hour winds knocked down trees and power lines leaving parts of the city without electricity. now the national weather service in los angeles has extended its flash flood warning for l.a. and glendale and santa clarita until 3:00 pacific this morning. i wouldn't be surprised if that gets extended. other things officials are worried about is not just the flooding but the mudslides and landslides that can occur due to all this moisture. there's certainly a lot to keep our eye on as the storm continues in the southwest

united states. >> you said it. michael spencer in san clemente, california. thank you so much. president biden will visit maui today to tour the devastation from the wildfires earlier this month and meet with survivors and first responders. at least 114 people are confirmed dead and more than 1,000 are missing as crews continue searching through the scorched rubble. danya bacchus has more on the ongoing efforts. >> reporter: while the difficult and grim recovery effort goes on maui, the president and first lady are prepared to visit families impacted by the deadly wildfires. >> he's going to be able to, one, bring hope to this community, but also reassure them that the federal government is there, that he has directed them to bring the resources. >> reporter: resources jessica armitage says can't come soon enough. she and her children watched their beloved town burn as they escaped. they lost everything. >> a big gust of wind hit, and it was like a match with gasoline.

set the whole entire road on fire. >> reporter: she's still questioning why they didn't receive a warning. on "face the nation" sunday, governor josh green said sirens should have sounded, and he criticized the lack of actions by now-resigned maui official. >> do i wish the sirens went off? of course i do. i think the answer that the emergency administrator from maui who's resigned said was utterly unsatisfactory. >> reporter: as the recovery effort continues, so does the healing. hundreds of children and teens were affected by the fires. community events like this one are hoping to provide a little joy. >> they're overwhelming us ice-cream. they're getting school supplies. >> seeing the kids be able to play and laugh and smile, it's huge. a big deal. >> reporter: sunday night local performers came together for a benefit concert with 100% of proceeds going to maui's hard-hit communities. danya bacchus, cbs news, maui. more devastating wildfires to tell you about now.

in the u.s. and in canada. three large fires are now raging in washington state. the largest outside spokane. one person has died, and thousands have been ordered to evacuate. two of those fires have consumed about 10,000 acres each destroying hundreds of structures. and in canada more than 35,000 people are under evacuation orders in british columbia. that's where nearly 400 wildfires are burning. the province has declared a state of emergency and imposed a ban on nonessential travel. this week in milwaukee republicans will hold their first presidential debate for the 2024 election. former president donald trump is qualified to be on the stage along with seven other white house hopefuls, but he says he will sit out this debate. trump has until friday to turn himself in to georgia authorities for his latest indictment over alleged efforts to overturn the 2020 loss in that state. this comes as a new cbs news poll shows trump has the biggest lead over his 2024 republican

challengers. leading significantly by double digits. the polling shows likely gop voters appear to dismiss the legal troubles against him with 77% calling his latest indictment politically motivated. and now to the war in ukraine. president volodymyr zelenskyy visited denmark this weekend as the leaders there and in the netherlands announced that they will donate american-made f-16 fighter jets to ukraine. they will be the first countries to donate the jets to support the effort against russia's invasion. this comes as russian -- a russian missile strike this weekend killed at least seven people and injured at least 140 more. debora patta has more on that. >> reporter: the moment a russian ballistic missile struck deep in the heart of chernihiv. the weekend peace shattered in an instant, and the exact moment our cbs news team was driving toward the city center.

this is the very building we were heading for. minutes before we arrived it was hit by a massive explosion. in the line of fire, the city's landmark theater, a university block, and the central square where families take their children to play, and on this particular day was filled with people on their way to church to mark an orthodox religious festival. a day of celebration turned into one of horror and loss. and a terrifying end to the summer holiday for passengers returning home from their vacation on this bus. "i saw sparks, fire, and we started to fall, the glass shattered," lilia said. "everyone was screaming." on the nearby sidewalk, emergency workers treated the wounded, but for this young woman, it was too late.

russia's first lunar mission in nearly five decades has ended in failure. the country's space agency announced yesterday its pilotless luna-25 spacecraft spun out of control and crashed into the moon. the spacecraft was expected to land today on the moon's south pole. it was racing to arrive ahead of an indian spacecraft which launched last month. the grandson of former president jimmy carter spoke out about his grandparents' health, and a california business owner was killed after displaying a pride flag at her store. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." "the sacramento bee" is reporting on the fatal shooting of a california woman after what police say was a dispute over a pride flag. the 66-year-old woman was killed friday outside the business she owned east of los angeles. police say the accused gunman made offensive remarks about a rainbow flag outside the store before the shooting. he was killed in a confrontation with police. starbucks will have to pay millions more to a manager who was fired after the arrest of two black men. the company has been ordered to pay $2.7 million in last wages -- lost wages to shannon phillips. she was already awarded $25.6 million in june. back in 2018 a philadelphia store manager called police on two black men sitting in the coffee shop without ordering anything. they were later released without charges. phillips, who was not involved in the arrest, alleged she and other white employees were unfairly punished. and "people" magazine is offering a health update on jimmy carter and his wife. their grandson says the couple is still present and aware of what going on around them. the 99-year-old former president announced in february that he had entered hospice care and would spend his remaining time at home with his family. three months later, the 96-year-old former first lady revealed that she was diagnosed with dementia. coming up, d.c.'s "blue

s&p 500 lost a fraction. with the peak atlantic hurricane season approaching, citi is warning that major storms could massively disrupt the gas supply. gas prices are already currently at a ten-month high at about $3.88 a gallon. according to noaa, the hurricane season which lasts from june 1st to november 30th, has a 60% chance of being above normal due to record high ocean temperatures. storms tend to impact the gulf coast and nearby refineries. if you have a nissan, listen up. the company is recalling 236,000 cars because the tie rods in front suspension can bend and break possibly causing drivers to lose steering. we're talking about nissan centra compact cars from the 2020 to 2022 years. letters notifying owners will be mailed starting october 5th and a second letter will go out once parts are available. and trader joe's is warning that these crackers may have metal in them. so the company's multigrain
