flash floods and massive mudslides clogging roads and trapping vehicles. we'll look at the aftermath of tropical storm hilary. >> we are seeing about a year's worth of rain in one day. president joe biden just arrived on maui. we'll have the latest on search efforts after those deadly wildfires. test results are in. what an east bay health department found in the water at a day spa following death of two customers. good afternoon. record rainfall, flooding, mudslides from tropical storm hilary shutting down roads and

forcing water rescues. death valley is typically known for heat but check out all the water flowing through the national park. the park service is telling people to steer clear of the area. for the latest, let's bring in jason allen who is live in palm springs. >> reporter: they've really been spending all day trying to push tons much mud off this thorough fare which leads to the interstate which is still closed. this is not just a road clearing operation. this is still an ongoing rescue operation because crews are trying to get into neighborhoods where there are still people in houses that in some cases are surrounded by up to five feet of mud. clean up across southern california is underway in the aftermath of tropical storm hilary. one family escaped injury after this huge tree just missed falling on their home near los angeles. >> i thank god because all my

family is safe. >> reporter: many in usually drought stricken palm strings found they have temporary problem. a river of mud, many drivers spent the night in their vehicles. the national guard is here to help people who need rescuing still because some of the roads into the neighborhoods are still impassable. heavy rain flooded this mobile home park leaving damage in at least 60 homes. >> water was rushing and it was deep, all the rocks. you are very unstable. >> this flood, this was water like a lake, all through here, back yards, side yards. it happens so seldom. i like the people and like living here but it makes me wonder if i am living in the right place. >> reporter: water gushed through this casino parking lot in las vegas. in yuma trees a

power lines are down. >> this is an 89-year-old circumstance. we will not live to see the next one. >> reporter: for others, it brought the opportunity to boogie board in a desert town. rescue crews have been using front end loaders with a bucket attachment, carrying people out in the bucket attachment of the neighborhood. it could be two to three days before this dries enough for them to move it off the roads. >> what's the mood like? are people able to venture out and get a look at the damage? >> reporter: they are for the most part. that's interesting because yesterday most stayed in. i think there was really a lot of uncertainty never going through anything like that. today, a lot of curiosity at what kind of damage the storm did. >> thank you very much. flood waters also destroyed roads in oakland and san bernardino county. rocks and trees were

scattered across the highway. large parts of the county are under evacuation orders and clean up crews have a big job ahead of them. flood waters are still flowing there. take a look at the large cracks in the road right there. the storm caused a road in nevada to collapse. it dropped 8.7 inches at lee canyon. that shattered the old record. it was the first tropical storm ever to cross into nevada. flooding and mudslides weren't enough, there was a quake. several other small quakes were felt around the area and bay area rescue teams in the meantime, northern california, red cross are in southern california. four members of the oakland fire department are part of the rescue efforts. they've already helped people in riverside and the team is expected to stay through tuesday. oakland fire says while the team is helping folks they admit it puts a train on their resources here.

>> our main focus is of course our own citizens and our community. at the same token, we definitely try hard to help our neighbors out. >> red cross has set up tent shelters in the disaster zone and say they are ready for influx of people. for the latest, brian, we have seen incredible frightening images in southern california. is it over? >> pretty much. the tropical storm was downgraded into a low that is well out of nevada, well out of idaho and over the top end of a high that's causing midwest to swelter. you see the rapid movement. that's all that's left of hilary which will be a factor for upper part of the u.s. we've got this low that's been spinning over the bay area for more than a week. you will notice toward the end of the doppler loop that the little bit of rain into the bay area, not a lot, there is a possibility of a thunderstorm in the east bay later in the afternoon. as you see on the doppler, few showers moving in

over the bay area. a drop or two from time to time would not be a surprise. in terms of totals, epic. almost a foot of rain in 24 hours. mount lagoon in san diego county had seven inches of rain. all the dry washes are filling with rain. it under cuts banks, roads fail. they're not done in that respect. in terms of the rain, it is done. we'll have more on our forecast which introduces possibility of a thunder shower later today. >> thanks. to hawaii where in the past hour president joe biden and first lady arrived on island of maui to get a first hand view of the devastation by the deadly wildfires. anne makovec has the latest as the search continues. >> the visit comes as difficult recovery effort continues in lahaina. at least 114 people are confirmed dead and hundreds of others are still missing.

president biden and dr. jill biden arrived in maui around 2:00 our time. earlier today they left lake tahoe and took off from reno to maui. they'll be meeting with first responders, volunteers, people who lost their homes. workers scoured 85% of the disaster area in maui. flames engulfed the historic town of lahaina almost two weeks ago and families are sharing the unimaginable heart breaking moments. a 14-year-old was home alone when the fire started. >> when i got to his bedroom he was there lying and hugging my dog. he was not as i expected, in ashes. >> maui mayor says 850 people are officially listed as missing. there were more than 2,000 names when the recovery process started. a man has been putting up posters with pictures of his step father hoping he might still be found alive. >> we don't know. he might have

left early or ran to another area that was bad. they might have diverted him back. >> officials are asking people to provide samples of dna in case it is needed to identify remays. fema has distributed to around 8,000 families and biden says it plans to continue to send resources for as long as it takes. we have more on how you can help on kpix.com. former president trump is facing a $200,000 bond in georgia. that was announced after trump's legal team met with the fulton district attorney's office. the former president was charged with racketeering for allegedly trying to interfere with the 2020 election. deadline for trump to turn himself in is this friday. this is the fourth indictment against the former president who continues to campaign for gop nomination. other candidates will hold a

debate wednesday. trump says he will not join them. new information into the newsroom, contra costa health department confirmed legionnaires disease has been found at a richmond spa. it close the august 5 after two people died from the disease. the health department says it is investigating two additional cases. the business won't be allowed to reopen until it is reinspected. a bill to raise bay other bridge tolls to pay for public transportation, that's put on pause. the author of the bill says they will put together a group of bay area legislators to come up with proposals for next session. it would have raised tolls by 1.50 to help agencies like bart and muni. people are innovating and trying to help the city bounce back. how they're tuned into opportunities through concerts and festivals. >> reporter: another planet

entertainment who produces outside lands wants to see another weekend of summer concerts inside golden gate park. thanks to outside lands they say they already have the infrastructure they need to pull it off. that means more live music happening across san francisco if this project is approved. another planet entertainment wants to bring new set of summer concerts to the park and would also bring other concerts along with it as part of the deal. unlike outside lands, these new separate concerts would be smaller events focused on a headliner. part of the proposal though by city leaders wants to see downtown concerts as well outside in historic plazas for free like civic center plaza, union square, embarcadero plaza. those would start in 2024. downtown concerts would join stone grove and hardly strictly bluegrass festival has new events. they hope to be a

best nation for arts and night life which is part of the plan to help the neighborhood. the new concerts at polo field would be ticketed and permit fees would help pay for programming that can assist children, adults, seniors across the city. the proposal for another weekend of concerts will go before board of supervisors next month. still ahead, rain hits part of the wine country this weekend. how the weather this year is impacting the upcoming harvest. wildfires in northern california bringing smoke and poor air quality to the bay area. we will tell you

napa and sonoma got rain this weekend but it is early enough in the season that it won't impact harvest. wine makers tell us since we've had a cool summer the grapes have matured more slowly and are two weeks behind schedule. they're too young to be damaged but closer to harvest time, that won't be the case. >> our typical harvest starts around september 1. if we had a tremendous rain storm september 15 or 20, it can really have very bad effects on the grapes. >> wine makers say delayed season will be good for the quality of the wine grapes but it also delays harvest pushing it closer to those autumn rains. climate change has been for wildfires, droughts, massive flooding but it is creating new opportunities for

wine makers. your next glass can come from an unexpected place. >> reporter: rows and rows of vine can conjure images of europe's famous wine regions. this is sweden. two french wine makers moved to the scandinavian country to uncork its potential. she says the weather is more stable and predictable unlike france which has long, hot periods with no rain and big hail storms. >> we hope this house and production will be for the future. >> reporter: felix sees potential to put sweden on the wine making map with warmer and longer growing seasons and none of the weather, new varieties of grapes round out the industry. >> one of the best vintages for champagne the last 100 years was 1996. from a climate perspective that would be 2021 in sweden. >> reporter: as drought and

rising heat force traditional regions to reassess methods, sweden is toasting success. >> this is the frontier. >> reporter: a frontier exploring a new territory in the world of wine . >> sweden isn't likely to challenge any time soon. vineyards cover 350 acres. that's compared to more than 2 million-acres in spain. an early morning rescue for a dive team in alameda. crews found a car in the water when they arrived around 3:30. a rescue swimmer dove in and pulled the man from the water. he was unconscious and not breathing. firefighters took the victim to a trauma center. his condition is unknown. evacuations happening now due to wildfires in parts of northern california. this is video from the smith river complex fires. they burned more than 28,000 acres near the oregon border. large fires are

also burning in humboldt, trinity, sis cue. bay area air quality management district issuing smoke advisory through tomorrow due to northern california wildfires. let's look at our forecast. at least for now, that's still part of a storm outside the clouds and rain, not part of smoke. >> we've got this low pressure that's just persistently offshore, helping drag down smoke from the wildfires. why talk about it when i can show you. you see that the smoke concentration from the wildfires burning around here is being dragged down to san francisco. this is by tomorrow afternoon at quarter to 4:00. it kind of hangs around a bit but actually as we head into the weekend it's still going to be around. in the meantime we have a chance of an east bay thunderstorm, high pressure to the east, low pressure to the west. as a result, we dispense with the clouds and small chance of sprinkles and instead we'll be dealing with this for

the weekend. the plume of smoke is lifted north, does the wiggle dance, friday and saturday we can be affected minimally then. not more probably than the smoke advisory level. hilary is out of here. most of the rain is into oregon, idaho, montana and drying up as it does. you see the circulation of the low over here. as a result in the peninsula you have a few showers in the bay area. a closer look to high def doppler as to what's in store tonight, the chance for a few sprinkles as you see moving south to north and a possibility of a thunderstorm or two. i showed you this but it is worth seeing again. about a foot of rain above palm springs. death valley, wow, 2.3 inches of rain in one day. that's about what they get in a year. we'll be looking for things to dry out and they'll continue to be

cleaning up. some major cities, these are all records. l.a., two and a half. san diego 1.82. palm dale above the grapevine, 3.93 in the high desert. but it's out and moved quickly at least. the tropical storm is moving about 25 miles an hour by the time it entered southern california. so it didn't linger. the longer it lingered, the more rain would have fallen. and we got plenty. if you look at the temperature anomaly, you will notice that the high pressure continues to bake the southeast even as we continue cool for the next couple days. tomorrow we'll be in the 80s but we will have a warming trend in the bay area. the time lapse here as we look ahead into tuesday afternoon, slowly will be going to mostly sunny skies. so we are looking for clearer weather. we are looking for things to warm up. rain chances, a little bit tomorrow but not much. then we'll pretty much dry it up as we get to the weekend. showers through evening and areas of

dense fog. quieter weather returning tomorrow, warming trend through mid week. we'll be near 100 inland on wednesday. then we get a little bit smoke and haze from time to time. overnight lows tonight will be in the low 60s and daytime highs tomorrow will be in the 80s in the south bay. it will be less humid, 80s in the east bay. enjoy it while you can. it will go up ten degrees wednesday. in the north bay, we'll be looking for 80s. extended forecast calls for a warming trend for everybody in the bay area as we get to wednesday and thursday. even san francisco will be in the mid 70s. we'll be near 90 in the north bay wednesday. wednesday is the warmest day. one hot day wednesday and by the weekend we'll be cooling it back to the low 90s. what a weekend but it looks like it is mostly gone. still ahead, purdy put his arm to the test in the saturday game against the broncos. we'll
