floodwaters and mud fills streets and overwhelms roads. we're on the ground with the latest on the clean upand where the storm is headed next. biden visits maui. he visits them. how he promises to rebuild the scorched island. and a community in mourning. a memorial growing outside a california store where the owner was killed apparently over a p.r.i.d.e. flag hanging outside her shop. we talked to witnesses who heard we talked to witnesses who heard the deadly confrontation. captioning funded by cbs the deadly confrontation. good good morning and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. tropical storm hilary slammed southern california with record-breaking rainfall, strong winds, and intense floodwaters. what is usually sunny desert has been transformed into thick mud covering everything in sight. in some areas the mud is several feet deep and has completely overwhelmed roads and waterways.

and it's not over yet. forecasters say there's more severe weather on the way. michael spencer starts us off in long beach, california. michael, good morning. >> reporter: well, good morning, anne-marie. cleanup efforts are underway here in southern california and across other parts of the southwest. tropical storm hilary brought record-breaking rainfall and left behind damage that will take months to clean up. crews in cathedral county, california, had to use bulldozers to rescue people trapped in 5 feet of mud. officials say it's more like quicksand, but there will be nothing quick to clear it out. >> it went right through houses, right through the front door and right out the back. >> reporter: tropical storm hilary pounded nearby palm springs with almost as much rain in one day as the city gets in a year. >> who has mud insurance in a desert? >> reporter: mud flows occurred in the desert.

in the higher elevations, decimated mountainsides. steve markrkham said t the sand puput near hisis home depapartm ststand a chance. >> there a are boulderers the s of a volkswagen just sitting over there. so strange. >> reporter: it caught drivers by surprise. area residents are dealing with storm debris. the l.a. river is clogged with vegetation and trash. trash will keep piling up. it washed out roads and stranded people in hillside communities. officials say it's the worst flooding they've seen in 15 years. now the good news with this storm is there were no deaths or serious injuries reported in the united states, however, officials are warning ta the potential for more damage does remain, especially in the mountain regions where the threat of mudslides does still exist.

canyon are one of four cadaver dogs sifting through. >> we're talking about ash and metal, and that's basically what's left of those structures. >> reporter: the president and first lady also met with hundreds of survivors and impacted families. he promised to rebuild the town with residents' input while respecting culture and traditions. lahaina resident vera harvey and her husband are living with their daughter as they try to figure out what comes next. >> we're thankful we're alive. but a lot of people, some of our friends, are looking for loved ones. we just need help to recover and rebuild. >> reporter: the biden administration has approved more than $8 million in assistance. danya bacchus, cbs news, lahaina, hawaii. well, donald trump is set to surrender thursday to authorities in georgia after being criminally charged with trying to overturn the 2020 election. the former president's lawyers have agreed to a $200,000 bond as part of his release conditions. trump is barred from

intimidating codefendants, witnesses, or victims in the case, including on social media. the fulton county sheriff's office says when trump surrenders, there will be a hard lockdown. of the area surrounding the main county jail in atlanta. russian officials say that they've downed a ukrainian drone that hid outside an apartment complex in moscow early this morning. there were no reported injuries in the latest attack, but the airspace around the russian capital was briefly closed, and this comes as the chief of the russian mercenary group wagner posted a video address for the first time since a short-lived mutiny in june. in the video yevgeny prigozhin appears to be in africa and tries to recruit new people to join his efforts. also overseas a british nurse has been sentenced to life in prison for the murder of seven newborns. we've got to warn you, the details in this case are disturbing. 33-year-old lucy letby was convicted in the deaths of five boys and two girls and trying to

kill another six babies. the former neonatal nurse worked at a hospital in northern england. she injected the infants with insulin or air or force-fed them milk. the incidents all happened between 2015 and 2016. letby refused to appear in court for sentencing. well, court papers show that that a reporter's public record searches that prompted raids at a kansas newspaper office and publisher's home appear to be well within public access and legal. the new comes as video was released of police searching the home of the paper's co-owner on august 11th. the 98-year-old joan meyer could be seen yelling at officers. she died the next day. the newspaper was accused of violating the law when it obtained the driving records of a local restaurant owner. now to new developments in

the death of a local businesswoman in southern california who police say was done gunned down over a p.r.i.d.e. flag flying outside her door. cbs's elise preston has more. >> reporter: the pain palpable as community members cling to each other for comfort, signs of love and support fled the space where loved ones say hate killed laurie carlton. carlton was shot and killed friday after police say the shooter made several disparaging remarks about the p.r.i.d.e. flags hanging outside her shop. >> the suspect confronted her, and during the confrontation, he shot and killed carlton. >> i heard the first shot. >> i said there's something wrong with your wife. >> was he in shock too? >> big time. big time. >> reporter: the gunman ran away but was later shot and killed in a confrontation with police. days later close friend robin lyles is in disbelief that a friend she described as a courageous force for inclusivity

"the indianapolis star" reports indiana's near total abortion ban is now in effect. it comes after the indiana supreme court denied a request yesterday from the aclu and planned parenthood to rehear the case. the news sparked protests as the aclu called it a dark day in indiana's history. the republican-backed ban ends most abortions in the state, even in the earliest stages of pregnancy. the "chicago tribune" says an illinois woman has been arrested by federal agents for allegedly threatening to shoot donald trump and his 17-year-old son barron trump. 41-year-old fraycy fiorenza is accused of sending threatening emails to a school in the plalm beach, florida, area school. that's where the former president at his primary residence.
