from cbs news bay area, this is the afternoon edition. >> we are counting down to friday night lights at levi's stadium, a little red and gold style, the 49ers preseason game and for some players, a final chance to show coaches they deserve a roster spot at game time. i'm ryan yamamoto, we are a few hours away from the preseason finale, they are taking on the chargers at home, at levi's stadium, you can watch it right here on kpix. as for which 49ers you will see on the field tonight, anne makovec is following that for us.

>> fans were hoping that jake moody would get some more reps in this final preseason game that is apparently not in the cards, he is not going to play against the chargers, he did kick the game-winning field goal last week against the broncos after struggling in the first preseason game in vegas. by the regular season, we know brock purdy will be the 49ers starting quarterback and this week, kyle shanahan announced sam darnold will back him up, that puts trey lance in the number three spot and puts his future in question. the general manager, john lynch said on the flagship radio station it is likely lance will remain on the regular season roster. >> that's probably the most likely option, if we can find a landing spot for trey lance that is a really good one for him, and works for the organization, that is not something we turn a blind eye

residents were safely evacuated. no word on any injuries. to the east bay, where a police cruiser crashed into a wells fargo bank, it happened just after midnight. repair crews placed wood panels over the damaged corner this morning, no injuries were reported but the cause is under investigation. today's top stories, former president donald trump is fundraising off of his historic looking photo after surrendering to authorities in atlanta. the 18 others are charged with criminally concerning to overturn the georgia 2020 election. >> reporter: it is former president donald trump's fourth criminal indictment, but his first time having a mug shot taken. >> he arrived at the fulton county jail in atlanta thursday

utility acted negligently by failing to power down their electrical equipment during the high wind. hawaiian electric responded saying they are very disappointed that maui county chose this path while the investigation is still unfolding. the number of covid cases is inching up nationwide, the cdc expects this trend uptick to continue into the fall. and updated boosters will be available once the fda signed off on the cdc and they set eligibility guidelines. meanwhile, the flu shot is now out, doctors say it is best taken in october and you can get both at the same time. we now know california sea otters are cute, and now a growing body of evidence shows they play a big role in fighting the impacts of climate change. elizabeth cook shows us how. >> reporter: early morning, a

slough. >> that changed in the 80s when the monterey bay aquarium released rescued otters into the flu, it is home to the greatest concentration of southern sea otters in the world. thanks to the otters, another species, one that writes fights climate change is thriving. >> when the otters came in, the eelgrass have grown significantly. >> here is why, the otters eat a lot of crab, with fewer crab, the slugs exploded, the slugs eat excess allergy, they are scrapping it clean. >> so the seagrass can absorb the light and it flourishes. and that helps to tackle climate change. >> seagrass absorbs carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, and it stores it in the root base and the root base is buried in the marsh. so, that is a powerful form of carbon

sequestration. >> with the carbon stuck in the mud. >> it doesn't get released back into the atmosphere and cause global warming and such a problem around the world. >> back to the binoculars. the volunteers on land and the scientists on the boat are monitoring the otters to record their activities, social behavior and habitat use. >> we are counting the sea otters and reporting on their behavior. for example, when i see one, i describe whether it is foraging, resting, grooming, traveling, interacting. >> it is much more important to look down at their social dynamics, especially if they are going to try to rescue them. >> the hope is they may help to restore the dying eelgrass there. >> we are looking for the same otter populations in the whole west coast. >> and that may benefit us all.

>> the company says they plan to fly the latest prototype for a public exhibition by the end of the year, and reagan begin production by the end of 2025. i don't know about you, but we can't even get cruise vehicles right, and now we are talking about flying cars. but, you can get away from all of that traffic going to levi's stadium and at least get to the game pretty quick. >> that is going to be a reality today from a traffic standpoint, since the big game is coming up, and we've got here in a few hours, here's the forecast for tonight. temperatures will be just fine, mid-70s when we start and that game will start at 7:00 and we will be around 70, 71 degrees for kickoff. going to be a beautiful day, there's one minor issue to talk about from the way things look. it is hazy and we are pulling in some smoke, thanks to the wildfires to the north. the air quality management district has put out a general forecast for the bay

area for this weekend. this includes all regions. they break it down to the north bay and south bay, but this is the entire day, all looking at the same forecast for saturday and sunday and that is moderate air quality and that is coming from the wildfire smoke that is coming down. we are pulling in a little bit of smoke through the weekend, so just go easy on yourself. over the weekend, the air quality is not necessarily going to be the best. there is a day that stands out, there is a warm-up coming. once we get back here, this is the day with the issue. for inland parts of contra costa county, we are going to go back up to the verge of 100. 88 would be the reality. in general, that is also the day you are going to feel it no matter what part of the bay you are in. here is levi's stadium, we are talking about the temperatures being in the 70s at kickoff, looking

ahead to tomorrow's daytime highs, this is saturday. it'll be 82 in san jose, low 90s for the inland valleys. 87 in santa rosa, 76 in oakland. on the big picture, we are getting help right now, when you put the water vapor on it, watch it on the future cast, there is a weak storm spinning off the coast, that is helping to really deepen the marine layer. you will see a persistent return of gray skies this morning from the marine layer if you are wondering what happened. that will help kulas down for the weekend. by the time we get to friday and saturday, it is going away and it won't be there to help us anymore which is why there is a warm-up that shows up as we get into early next week. taking a look at san francisco and oakland, we know the temperatures aren't going to change a lot. when we look at the north bay and the south bay valleys, you can see the temperatures coming down for the weekend, then into the
