lance trade. and donald trump isn't treating his mugshot as a moment of shame, how his campaign is capitalizing on it tonight. from kpix, this is the late news with sara donchey on cbs news bay area. we have a lot to talk about tonight and that includes what happened before they even took the field. the fans were out in force today at levi stadium as they look ahead to the regular season. the big news tonight, the trey lance experiment is over. he's being traded to the dallas cowboys and the news broke before the game started. now that he's history, betty yu reports the faithful are looking to the future. >> reporter: the final preseason game at levi stadium didn't go in the way of 49ers fans friday night. still it didn't dampen their outlook for the season.
11:02 pm
the enthusiasm was palpable before the 9ers scored their first touchdown friday night against the l.a. chargers. we spotted popular fixtures in the crowd, including stacy samuels, known to many bay area sports fans as banjo man. he was wearing his signature rainbow propeller hat and playing his instrument, as he's done the last 40 years and we couldn't miss 49er mark. this is a tradition for you. >> the hat makes me stand out and i'm glad. >> reporter: the 9ers were first to score. things are looking pretty good. >> yeah, i know. obviously all the starters are really great and i'm confident bosa will be here and the team is really solid and i think shanahan finally has the players that will execute the way he wants. >> reporter: one player making headlines friday is trey lance who made a splashy entrance. the quarterback has been traded to the dallas cowboys for the 2024 fourth round pick.
11:03 pm
>> we traded so much to get him. it's kind of like a fool's gold. we got bummed out, but you know what? with brock purdy i think they're back up. >> reporter: ultimately the chargers won 23-12. >> you know, honestly i know it's preseason, but what we really need to look forward to is the regular season, a lot of guys doing their thing out here hoping trying to make the team, but week one is when we'll see the magic. >> reporter: superfans have a few predictions of their own. >> we'll meet the giants right here. we're going to the super bowl. >> reporter: meanwhile mark is looking for a new hat. five championship trophies up there. >> that's it, number five. that was the last one against san diego. >> reporter: looking for number six. >> yes, we are. we should have already had it twice now. >> as we've been talking about, the big story of the game happened before it even started. matt lively joins us now. after all the 9ers went through to get trey lance, they
11:04 pm
don't have a lot to show for it. >> reporter: not much to show for it and just interesting that the biggest story line tonight was about a quarterback that did not play. it was just two days ago that trey lance was told hey, you'll be qb three and now he's headed to dallas. the 9ers traded away their third overall pick from the 2021 nfl draft again heading to the dallas cowboys. he started two games as a rookie and two games last season before breaking his ankle, then lost his starting job to brock purdy. >> really hard day, such a wonderful young man. we took a shot and it didn't work out. we own that. we take accountability for it. circumstances took hold and he struggled through injuries and this team's ready to win. we like our quarterback. we like brock purdy a lot. we like sam darnold and we like brandon allen. >> reporter: they gave up so much to come up and get trey lance, three picks, the

dolphins traded some of those away and turned into tyreek hill, jaylen waddle and tyler chubb. we'll have more on the game. i'll talk to you in about 20 minutes. >> yeah. i mean 9ers quarterback drama there, it's not in short supply, by any stretch of the imagination. matt, thank you for keeping us posted. the man behind the wheel of a stolen car on a collision course from the east bay to san francisco and back is in custody tonight. he was driving so dangerously at rush hour chp couldn't even follow him on the ground. >> two chp motors got behind the vehicle a short period of time, but due to the clearly reckless nature of this person, they canceled their involvement and we continue to just allow the helicopter to follow him. >> the driver at one point crossed the bay bridge into san francisco. then our chopper caught up with him. as he turned back, we saw him clip at

least one car weaving dangerously in and out of traffic. he hit multiple cars. the suspect ditched the car in richmond near booker t. anderson park and ran off. some patrol cars drove onto the field looking for him and we saw officers running with guns drawn. then law enforcement converged on an apartment complex near l street and fleming avenue where he surrendered after an hours long standoff. at one point during the pursuit chp says the suspect was boxed in and hit one of their k-9s. the dog was taken to the vet and is expected to survive. a man accused of hit and killing a livermore grandmother while fleeing police will not get the deal offered him by alameda county's d.a. was wearing an ankle monitor and was supposed to be on house arrest for his alleged involvement in a deadly robbery. the deal would have made him a free man in about a year and a half. jose martinez spoke with the victim's family. >> it pelt like divine intervention. >> reporter: it's a moment of

bittersweet vindication for the family of linda woodward who was killed after being hit by a car fleeing police in 2022. >> this was a full 180 from last time we talked to the assistant d.a. because before it was like talking to a brick wall. they were just going to push forward the plea deal whether we liked it or not. >> reporter: the plea deal which many saw as lenient would have resulted in a lesser sentence for the accused, 20-year-old brandon jr. and put him out of prison in 2025. >> from what we were tomorrow, it was too early in the process for that deal and the judge wasn't sure if it would be applicable or even an ethical deal. >> reporter: a decision that stephanie klein, linda's youngest daughter, says gives them home justice will actually be served after a painful journey. >> the whole process has been really hard. it's been, you know, every i would say three to four weeks we were in court

and needing to face the person that took our mom from us. so it hasn't been easy at all. >> reporter: stephanie says that the fact that this plea deal was even part of the conversation shows a problem in the system. >> i feel like the district attorney overall has been really great with our family until this deal came about and we were kind of blindsided by it. it's a system that's very broken. it's something that needs to be fixed and we're hoping to be some part of that puzzle piece to get the system fixed. >> the next hearing for that family is next month. meanwhile a coalition trying to recall price rallied today at lake merritt saying her progressive policies are not working. we've reached out to price's office again and again on the recall for comment. no one has responded so far, but she posted her official response on facebook today saying, "i take my responsibilities as your district attorney very seriously," and listed what she's done in her eight months in office. she plans to take

questions from the public in an in-person town hall tomorrow at cornerstone missionary baptist church from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. the california woman convicted of staging her own disappearance, then lying to the cops about it has been released from prison six months early. sherri papini is out on what's called community confinement, basically like house arrest just at a halfway house. she'll have to find a job to start paying the $300,000 she owes in restitution. >> they will meet another case manager who will review the case plan and then it says how much liberty to give to the individual. once they're there a period of time and proven themselves worthy, if they have support, a good release plan, they can also then transition to what's called home confinement. >> papini should be out of community confinement by the end of october. this could be the most infamous mugshot ever taken, but it doesn't seem to be something former president trump is ashamed of exactly, how he's already making money

off it. and this looks like a fire truck until you look a little bit closer and you see a couple of shirtless guys on top of it, the mystery that has norcal fire department scratching their heads. and a surfer stuck on the rocks sounds scary, but wait till you see what he had to do to get himself up before rescuers were able to step in. coming up in the first alert forecast, most of the bay area got a big drop in temperatures today, how long will it last? there's another 100-degree day in the seven-day forecast, so it won't last too long. how long are we keeping the smoke in the sky? i'll show you where that's coming from and our air quality forecast coming up next. and a viral hotdog moment leads to the best worst idea ever.

former president donald trump obviously an incredibly fame man who has been seen all over the world, but never like that, in a mugshot, but within an hour of leaving jail in georgia his campaign started selling mugs and t-shirts with his mugshot on it and as tom foreman reports, his picture is joining the ranks of infamous mugshots of famous people. >> reporter: hardened criminals, wandering celebrities and now this one. for many a mugshot is a step toward the penitentiary, but donald trump hopes his will lead back to the presidency. >> what has taken place here is a travesty of justice. we did nothing wrong. i did nothing wrong. >> go to the caucuses tomorrow

night and let's change america together. thank you. >> reporter: he's not the first politician snapped that way. former senator and democratic presidential candidate john edwards was charged but not convicted of scheming to violate campaign finance laws to hide an affair. former texas congressman tom delay was convicted of money laundering and conspiracy. then the conviction was overturned. the lone star state's former governor, rick perry, was accused of abusing his power. when those charges were dismissed, he made the trumpian move of using his mugshots to raise money. >> this is, in fact, o.j. coming down the freeway. >> reporter: and it's not all politics. almost 30 years ago that white bronco chase led to this timeless mugshot of celebrity o.j. simpson which time magazine darkened making him look more sinister. "time" apologized and o.j. -- >> not guilty of the crime of murder. >> reporter: other celebrities

mugshot while leaving a workout class today. >> i did see it on television. >> reporter: what did you think? >> handsome guy. >> biden's tahoe trip has not gone entirely smoothly. u.s. military fighter jets had to intervene when someone flew into restricted airspace. norad said it happened early this morning over tahoe where biden is staying. three fighter jets sent out flares to get the civilian pilot's attention. >> reporter: what brought down his airplane? >> i'm not at liberty to speak to that precisely, but as you know because you and i have talked about it, i find no surprise in what happened, but they're trying to nail down precisely. i don't have anything to say to you about that. >> something similar happened last summer when biden was vacationing in delaware and back in june when biden was here in the bay area in marin

county. this, if you look closely, looks a lot like a fire engine, but if you look even closer than that, you see some shirtless guys on top. apparently this has been riding around sacramento with the shirtless guys and the sacramento fire department noticed. they say the engine has been going around the city and spewing water. sacramento fire says it's not ours. they said, "we're looking into this." it is actually illegal to take water from a hydrant without a permit. back here in the bay area, firefighters had a real call to contend with. a surfer stranded on the rocks near the former cliff house with huge waves breaking down below. there he is sitting right there. so a rescue team tried to come down to save him the best they could. they hooked him up to some ropes, but he still had to climb up without shoes on some very sharp rocks. we'll bring darren peck in for this one. the vegas strip got some pretty nasty flooding

last night. the roadways flooded. a roof collapsed at harrah's, yes. people had to rush out. the nightclub was evacuated. >> they put out a tweet or an x saying it was just tiles. the roof didn't actually collapse. eve fine. >> if you're planning your night out in vegas and water starts coming from the ceiling, problematic. >> there was a pretty devastating flood in vegas last summer. they get summer monsoons and the thunderstorms, but we were just dealing with hilary in this state. they just got some of harold. harold was the other tropical storm from the atlantic, went to texas tuesday and then the leftovers from harold got pulled over into the desert southwest and that's what fueled a lot of that. >> harold, get out of town. your luck has run out. >> in fact, i can show you what harold looks like. harold really is old news. that was harold tuesday morning. this is texas just to show you the direction it was going and the leftover moisture from that had to go somewhere. that's what

happened to vegas. back here at home, that was our sky today. we are pulling in smoke from the wildfire on the far northwest corner of the state, hasn't been pretty and most of the sensors now for air quality bay area-wide are in the moderate county. we've been through much worse than that in the past, but we haven't seen the entire bay area go moderate like now. air quality will be an issue tomorrow. the high resolution smoke forecast, the brighter the color in greens, the higher the concentration of smoke pulled our way and this doesn't change much tomorrow. tomorrow's probably still going to look hazy, air quality still moderate. that is the official forecast from the bay area air quality management district. moderate air quality both days this weekend, saturday and sunday. sunday might be a little better. keep that in mind, not the best day to be overdoing it outdoors if you don't have to. it could be worse, but a number of days

like this in a row, that's the bad stuff. tomorrow marine layer comes back. we all wake up to gray skies tomorrow. you can call it fogust if you want. we should be seeing a little less of this over the next six weeks or so, but we have it now. that's why we cool down so much. some places today were 10 to 15 degrees cooler than yesterday. here's tomorrow. tomorrow we warm back up by about 5 or 6 degrees. it is a little warmer saturday because even though the marine layer's coming in tomorrow and we'll wake up with gray skies, it won't last as long as today. it won't be as far inland and have as big of impact on the temperatures. here's how we did it. look at that, little spin in the clouds. it's very subtle. you can't miss it on the water vapor. there's an area of low pressure out there. that is what deepened the marine layer. watch the flow in

the atmosphere, threw it onshore and that's what helped us. that will start fading. watch it drifting north the next few days. if that leaves, we'll lose our help and there's a warm-up coming. by next week it will get hot again. we'll see that in the seven-day forecast, but before we leave this behind, watch what it's doing with the smoke coming out of canada and the fire in northwest california. look at all the smoke getting pulled into that thing, wrapped around it and that's good actually because most of it's getting held offshore, but if that thing wobbles our way early next week, it may throw us a little more smoke. it's that time of year. we'll be looking at smoke forecasts more than we have, especially considering there's a 30 plus thousand acre wildfire burning in california now, pretty big. it pales in comparison to the mega fires we've all gotten used to, but still way up on the northwest corner of the state, that thing will keep putting smoke in the air. now it's just a matter of

which way's the wind blowing? there is the seven-day forecast with the 100-degree day. inland east bay, this is all pretty much average. that's 3 or 4 degrees warmer than today. the weekend looks pretty good, but there is a warm-up next week, 100 wednesday. we won't stay there long. hopefully you noticed that the 84-degree day on there and to round out the seven-day forecast with two other microclimates, there's san francisco and oakland. oakland is near 80 wednesday next week. >> san francisco at 80 degrees is a different kind of 80 degrees, too. >> i know. we just lived through that two days ago. that was enough. >> i was uncomfortable in my house. thank you. she made history for the nba, the ncaa and again tonight for the nfl, the woman who pulled on of a first tonight at levi stadium. the party continues here at levi's. the 9ers wrapped up the
