exercise. we'll have the latest from australia. and walk-off in williamsport. the kids from california win the little league world series championship, we'll show you their dramatic finish. good morning. i'm in for anne-marie green this morning. we're learning more about three people killed in a racist. hundreds held a vigil near the scene last night to mourn the two men and one woman killed as the fbi now investigates this deadly attack. wendy gillette is here in new york with more on this story. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. about 200 people gathered for last night's vigil which was held just a block away from the store where three people were killed. they heard prayers, songs, and a series of speeches as the community tries to make sense of a shooting that officials say was fueled by hate.

>> the families that have lost someone -- >> reporter: a city in mourning. residents of jacksonville came together for a prayer vigil after a white man gunned down three people at a dollar general store. >> no more fwdivision. no hmore rate. >> we're going to make sure evil does not triumph in the state of florida. >> reporter: authorities say the gunman targeted two shoppers and an employ because of their race. jerrald gallion, angela carr, and a.j. laguerre who worked at the store. gallion's relatives describe hip a great fwaurth to his young daughter who never missed a beat. >> i don't know how to tell her her daddy's not coming back. i don't know how to tell her. i don't have the words. >> reporter: the jacksonville sheriff's office released this surveillance of the suspected shooter identified as 21-year-old ryan parmeter, wearing tactical gear and armed with a handgun and an ar-15

rifle that was painted with swastikas. authorities say he opened fire on his victims inside and outside of the store before he shot and killed himself. >> he wanted to kill black people, his writings and manifestows were -- the diary of a madman. >> reporter: the sheriff said the suspect bought the guns legally but had been involuntarily committed for a mental health examination six years ago. before the shooting, police say the gunman was spotted at the historically black edward waters university. the fbi has opened a civil rights investigation. gallion had planned to spend the weekend with his 4-year-old daughter. instead, his family is planning his funeral. the white house says president biden spoke to jacksonville's mayor and sheriff to offer his full support to the people of the community. >> okay. wendy gillette in new york. thank you so much, wendy. well, there was a deadly air crash involving u.s. marines. it happened yesterday during a multinational military exercise when their osprey aircraft

crashed on a remote australian island. elise preston reports from outside camp pendleton where cbs news has learned some of the marines are based. >> reporter: the military aircraft carrying 23 american marines crashed near darwood, australia, second after the pilot radioed in an emergency. the osprey, similar to these, went down during a training exerts at 9:30 a.m. australian time on melville island, killing at least three. >> this is a terrible incident. >> reporter: helicopters airlifted five seriously wounded marines to royal darwood hospital about 60 miles away. network tense samarra gardener. >> the hospital has activated its highest emergency level. several ward were cleared to cope with the wounded. >> reporter: officials tell cbs news the crash involved marines from camp pendleton, and the osprey was based out of hawaii.

the tilt rotor aircraft was one of two taking part in a 12-day routine international exercise involving troops from multiple countries. this is the second deadly incident this week involving a marine aircraft. a horner jet crashed near san diego thursday killing the pilot. just last year, nine marines died in two separate accidents involving ospreys. one near san diego and one in norway. the military exercises which were supposed to continue until september 7th are on pause for now as the crash investigation continues. elise preston, cbs news, outside camp pendleton, california. an artist in atlanta has turned president trump's mugshot into a mural. take a look. it was painted along the atlanta beltline east side trail. attorneys for trump's former white house chief of staff mark meadows will head to federal court in georgia today. more on the first major test for

prosecutors in the election interference case. >> reporter: monday britains the first hearing in the georgia state interference case against former president trump and 18 co-defendants. former chief of staff mark meadows is seeking to have his state case moved to federal court. he has denied any wrongdoing. since former president trump's booking photo was released, his campaign claims it's raised over $7 million and close to $20 million in the last three weeks. >> look, there's almost nothing anymore that he could do that would surprise me in terms of the ongoing grift. >> reporter: republican presidential candidate chris christie was asked about these donations on "face the nation." >> he's taking people who donate an average of $100 to him to try to get him to become president of the united states again, and he's using that money to pay his legal fees. it's unethical. it's immoral. >> reporter: all but one of the 19 co-defendants have been released. the former president faces a total of 91 felonies in four indictments.

wildfires that killed more than 100 people earlier this month. russian investigators say genetic tests now confirm that mercenary leader yevgeny prigozhin was one of ten people killed in a plane crash. the private plane went down last wednesday near moscow two months after prigozhin led a failed mutiny against russian military leader. a preliminary u.s. intelligence assessment concluded that an intensional explosion caused the plane to crash. and this morning, there are four new crew members on board the international space station. their spacex dragon capsule docked with the orbiting space lab yesterday after blasting off from florida's kennedy space center on saturday. the astronauts from the u.s., denmark, japan, and russia were all greeted by seven other astronauts already on board. four of them will now head home. the new crew will be on the iss for about six months. coming up, close call.

suspension cables and towers from this decades' old i-74 bridge connecting iowa and illinois over the mississippi river. first phase of the demo took place back in june. a new bridge opened in 2021. the "sun sentinel" says tropical storm idalia is forecast to become a category-two hurricane and head toward florida. it's near the coast of cuba and is expected to develop into a hurricane tomorrow over the eastern gulf of mexico. that's when there's a risk of storm surge, hurricane-force winds, and flash flooding along the west coast and panhandle. >> landfall is expected along the big ben region wednesday and could arrive at the state of florida as strong as a category-two hurricane. the storms, of course, as we know, these things can wobble. so floridians aong our gulf coast should be vigilant, even if you're currently outside the cone and, indeed, you could see% impacts.
