from cbs news bay area, this is the afternoon edition. hundreds of students take over east bay mall , causing chaos for shoppers. once we left the parking lot, we heard a gunshot. it was pretty loud. >> there's a lot of chaos going on so we did not really know what was going on. we just wanted to get out. what police say may have prompted all this, and where the investigation stands now. a trial date has been set in the former president trump's federal case relating to january 6th, and alleged efforts to overturn the 20/20 election. i'm natalie brand in washington, with where it falls on the president the primary calendar. good afternoon, i'm elizabeth cook. we start with new developments in former president trump's federal case related to january 6th. , in

his efforts to overturn the 2020 election. the judge has set a trial date and it will come during one of the biggest days of the upcoming primary calendar. >> reporter: former president trump's attorneys did not get the trial date they pushed for in the federal election interference case. instead the judge has scheduled it for march 4th of next year. >> the judge was not buying what the defense was selling here. >> i think that what the judge acknowledged is that there is a public interest in a speedy resolution. >> reporter: jury selection is scheduled to begin the day before super tuesday, when 15 states hold gop primary contests. it also comes three weeks before his new york trial relating to alleged hush money payments to adult film actress, stormy daniels. trump told to consider conservative radio show on monday, that his conservatives are still with him. >> usually if a thing like that happens that the end of your political career. what happens is, they get it because they

see the nonsense they are talking about, it's nonsense. >> reporter: judge tonya chet can emphasize she wants to treat trump like any other defendant and wants to make the trial date work regardless of schedule. in georgia, trump and 18 codefendants are scheduled to be arraigned on september six. >> i have a strong feeling that district attorney willis will try many iterations of this case. it will be difficult to try all the defendants at once. >> reporter: mark meadows was in court today, asking that his case be moved to federal court. former president trump is using his legal cases to fund raise from supporters. his campaign announced it had raised $7 million off of mugshots since last thursday.

authorities are instigating a chaotic scene at an emeryville shopping mall over the weekend. hundreds of teenagers started fighting near the bay street mall. the mall was forced to close stores early. police say one juvenile was stabbed. at one point, there was a report of a gun shot. betty yu got eyewitness accounts. >> reporter: a witness showed me this video, the dramatic moments for they were able to evacuate the amc movie theater. amc -- emeryville police said juveniles were involved in fights on the property. this began after 50 people started causing trouble inside a store. one gunshot rang out, outside, about an hour later, one juvenile was stabbed incident non-life-threatening injuries. i spoke with witnesses who said, they were 10 minutes into the movie showing. worker told him to begin evacuating.

>> we asked people, what is happening, and they said, there are people throwing chairs, and the only way that we could get out, was obviously upstairs, like we cannot go downstairs because we just put ourselves into that, so we went through the parking lot, and then we heard a gunshot. that was pretty loud. >> honestly, we were expecting it. it would happen sooner or later. >> there's a lot of chaos going on. we just wanted to get out. >> police say the fights were orchestrated. the plan to meet up was put up on social media. so far, no one has been arrested. an early morning fire broke out at a home in daly city. investigators say the house was converted to a marijuana

growing operation. it is on gellar boulevard, across from sarah element tree school. firefighters did not find anyone inside the house at the time. they say the cause of the fire was likely related to unpermitted electrical wiring and lighting fixtures for illegal cannabis operations. it had been a fixture in san francisco's union square, for years. now, the four-story nordstrom store is officially close. this sign, thanking customers, is up in the window today. we were there this weekend, to see the empty store with displays roped off, no word on what exactly will be going into this space, but there is a silver lining in the area. max da reports a number of small businesses are ready to open. >> reporter: a company spokesperson attributed the closure to the changing dynamics of downtown. westfield is currently in the process of transferring control of the mall back to the lender. according to the mall's former owners, since 2019, they have seen a 43% drop in foot traffic, and occupancy has dropped 55%. but, as the chapter closes, a new one is about to begin for 17 small

businesses downtown, selected from the nearly 900 to be a part of the first round of the vacant a vibrant pop-up program. velasquez owns the plant shop which will prop up in september. >> we are devoted to this city. we want to add more of our light here, and i think that is what we need more than ever. >> simon is the executive director of sf new deal, the nonprofit dedicated to supporting small business owners on the program. >> it is not going to fix downtown. it will be a part of it, though, and i think it is an important part because it will help us re-envision what downtown could be. >> the 17 tenants are all different from one another, including a handful of restaurants, retail shops, art exhibits, and more. >> we are trying to create a lineup that will bring activity at all hours, and all days of

the week to downtown. >> the hope, says bertran, is to paint a picture of what the next generation of downtown san francisco can look like. >> we have many people in the bay area that want to participate in re-envisioning the future of downtown, and that these pop-ups represent a great deal of passion and energy. >> reporter: from folks like velasco and cortez, who have done business in the city for 10 years, you are grateful to this opportunity. >> without our community, we would be nothing. it means the world to us. >> the pop-ups are said to be up and running through the end of the year. real estate field firm cushman and wakeman says numbers are not good. the vacancy rate in downtown san jose is nearly 30% and in oakland's business district, it is nearly 36%.

a beautiful shot of the bay. the latest numbers from oakland police show a surge in crime. data released last week shows, compared to last year, homicides are up 17%. robberies are up by 25. car break-ins are up by nearly 50%, and car theft have more than doubled. one group is helping students in east oakland stay away from

the rising crime in the city. it is called homey's empowerment. shawn chitnis has more on how they are reacaching out toto young people and givin them hope. >> real bullets in our neighborhood, but we cannot just live in fear. you can come and have an oasis. you know? you can come in and not realize, look at how beautiful this space is. immaculate floors, access to microscopes, access to the best in education, and you can have it in your neighborhood. we always have to provide what is called steppingstones. meet kids where they are at, in terms of their connection to math, science, reading, and everything else, and then build a bridge so that they can be there scholarly cells. >> how has that morphed into what you are doing with this school? >> it's something called mirroring. there's a notion that if you are my teacher and we look alike we can start to relate. it's powerful. everybody deserves mirroring of every culture and ethnicity. when you open up a book and you

can see yourself in it and your story is affirmed, you lean in. we are dealing with a difficult reality, but this does not have to be the only reality you see. you can also see homey's empowerment. >> why do you believe you can do something when others were unable to? >> i'm just thankful that someone didn't give up on me. i have been undocumented most of my life. my father left when i was really little, my mom got deported when i was nine years old, and often times, we give up on those kids. we are not saving anybody. they will save themselves . but, we are seeing the brilliance that already exists in these kids, and giving them the chances that got me all the way to harvard university, to get a doctorate. if i can get a doctorate, every one of these kids can get a doctorate as well, they just deserve a shot. >> this fall, the school will welcome its first class of 39th graders. goal is to keep the classes together through their high school years so they can grow as a group. the focus of the class will remain the same, and teachers can build on the growth students are making, year after year. you can see

due to wildfires near the oregon border and southern california. meteorologist jessica burch has a closer look at our forecast. >> widespread through the bay area, especially northbay, we are still sitting in that moderate to unhealthy category for sensitive groups. that has been the case for us this weekend and as we kick off this week. window start shifting in the next couple of days, especially in the upper-level atmosphere, and that will move that smoke towards us. we are keeping a close eye on the air quality pretty much all week long, as well as warmer temperatures. that is the other big weather story for us as we enter the next couple of days. basically, high pressure is building in which will warm us up, day by day, until wednesday. upper 90s we can see off the east bay this afternoon. potentially we will see triple digits in areas like antioch, brentwood, and even fairfield as we move north in those areas. half moon bay will also feel that once, to. today

alone we are sitting at about 10 degrees already off the east bay but in areas of the coast thanks to the marine later this morning, we are sitting a hair below average but here is the heat dome in full force. this will continue to stretch closer to us as we enter our weeks forecast. by wednesday, it peaks, then we cooled right back down to below average conditions as we enter our friday forecast. i will step off screen so you can see this. livermore, alone, in the upper 90s as early as wednesday, with low 90s quickly turning to 70s from thursday into friday. of course, we need to keep a close eye on that excessive heat risk map, too, because today and tomorrow we are still in the upper 90s for the most part across certain pockets like antioch. then once we enter our wednesday forecast, we are now in the high category. make sure you are hydrating and taking good care of herself. this midweek forecast is going to come to an end, and we will jump down to the 70s for those upper 90s for inland east bay for the rest of this week into the weekend. we will also notice cooldown in areas like san francisco and across the

bay bridge into oakland with the northbay in the 80s today, 90s tomorrow, and 70s by friday. a new plaque on the oracle park walls is honoring longtime san francisco giants clubhouse manager mike murphy. he was inducted into the teams wall of fame this weekend. about 50 current and former giants players showed up in support, the clubhouse manager, murphy, spent 65 years with the giants, starting as a bad boy at the age of 16 in 1958. >> god bless you all, and what a group that you came out for me, today. i guess i'm pretty good? >> pretty good indeed. he is a legend. mike murphy is the first nonplayer and non-owner to have a plaque on the king street brick wall at oracle park. challenged him and this game is over. >> this was so much fun to watch. speaking of baseball, we want to give a shout out to the little leaguers from southern california . a walkoff home run

three women, and one in two men will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime. that is according to the american cancer society. a recent study finds certain kinds of cancer are being diagnosed more often in younger adults. women, and adults in their 30s, seem to be driving a rise of early-onset cancer diagnosis rates. that is, cancer diagnosed before the age of 50. in a study , researchers found the rate of cancer diagnosis arose in adults in their 30s, from 2010 for 2019. but, they remained stable over that period another age groups. the rate of cancer in those 50 and older is falling. researchers found that early-onset cancers were going up fastest among people who identify as american indian, alaska natives, asians, and hispanics, and cancers with the highest numbers of early-onset cases diagnosed in 2019 were breast, thyroid, and

colorectal cancers. health experts believe an uptick in obesity at younger ages is one possible reason for the rise, along with smoking and lack of exercise. researchers also think screening for these cancers has become more sensitive. >> we are better at finding these cancers earlier 50 screenings are happening, they are more sensitive, so we might be finding more cancers that way. health experts are reminding us, a healthy lifestyle can help reduce your risk of cancer which means a healthy diet, exercise, and limiting alcohol. a study looking at a cte finds it might be more prevalent than previously believed, especially in amateur athletes. boston university's cte center analyzed 152 donated brains from athletes under the age of 50 at the time of their death. 63 had developed early signs of cte , that is a brain injury associated with multiple concussions. unlike past studies, most of these athletes
