any communication about what was going on would have been great. now at 11:00, a brawl at an east bay mall sends people running for cover, and tonight, workers tell us that they got no warning. you hear about car break ins and home burgalaries but what about pirates? >> i wish i could take them out and show them what pickleball is. a wildly popular sport is facing the future of the waterfront. the battle that pickleball fanatics say isn't over. hello. i'm sara donchey.
1:39 am
a huge violent brawl over the weekend, and similar incidents in multiple cities across the country but what happened at the bay street mall has a lot of people asking about safety and what can be done to stop things like this. a lot of workers said that they had no warning about what was going on outside. many workers said when this mall was swarmed with teens fighting on sunday, they were confused and frighten and some of them want more security measures. a witness shared video moments after the melee. you can see young people running down bay street on sunday. multiple agencies including the chp and the sheriffs rushed to back up emeryville police as they tried to control mobs of thieves. one person of stabbed and workers

at bath and body works locked themselves in the back room. ashley is a worker who said she was disappointed about communication. >> anything from law enforcement would have been great. i found out from social media and i know social media is a big presence in everyone's life and when you find out, it's like, whoa. it was just crazy today? >> reporter: police say that the drama started with about 50 teens in one store before it escalated outside. the amc theater told viewers to evacuate on what was national cinema day showing for $4. >> only certain stores have security. >> reporter: the councilmember rode to bay street and spent monday going to every store to ask about their safety. >> a lot of stores can't afford guards and they need panic
1:41 am
buttons so they don't have to pick up the phone and call dispatch. >> reporter: he said he would advocate for such technology and license mate readers. he himself had to call police what he had discovered his police and wallet were stolen from his bike bag. >> they will not get much. i am on a councilman's billion but no. the criminals have a bapt and we have to adapt with him. >> reporter: he will arrange a townhall because of the event. >> the typical rowdiness, but nothing crazy. we have never been in a situation like yesterday, ever. >> reporter: bay street mall did not return or and for comment but the school district did with the superintendent saying that a large number of students were involved and a
1:42 am
social media post encouraged kids to go to the mall and link up, and the email asked parents to keep a closer eye on their kids and what they are doing online. there is debate about what can be done to prevent crimes like those when juveniles are involved and not everyone agrees but retired fbi agent harp thinks there have been more enforcement than not. >> more times than not they are getting off with a slap on their wrist or nothing at all, and that's no deterrent for kids. >> as we mentioned, something similar happened at a southern california mall. a group of teenagers swarmed a mall in torrance and there was at least one gunshot and in washington state, people ran out of a mall
1:43 am
in seattle after teens caused problem there. you heard the news in the past hour from the attorney representing a detective who shot a 22-year-old in a parking lot in june 2020 after a night of protest in the murder of george floyd. a third party into the investigation found that he broke department policies on use of force. however, there was another hearing that found his use of force was justify and he will be reinstated with pay. paul, we were just talking about a tropical storm. yeah and this will be stronger than the tropical storm that hit southern california. this will be a hurricane, and they are shutting down the airports in florida, and things are already ramping up. there are two
1:44 am
different tropical systems. this is franklin in the atlantic ocean, and this is idalia that will strengthen to a hurricane probably before the night is over. let's zoom in for a look. it's a tropical storm and it's interacting with cuba but it will move over very warm ocean water and the conditions will be favorable for this to rapidly intensify in the next 24 hours and when it approaches landfall in tampa, it will be a major category 3 hurricane with 120-mile-per-hour sustained winds. the wind will be grabbing the ocean water from the gulf of mexico and sending it into tampa bay and along the coastline of florida, a dangerous situation with a
1:45 am
large storm surge likely addition to torrential wind damage, and the next 24 hours will be very busy to the gulf of mexico as it tracks to the north and has its eyes set on that part of the florida coastline but a wiggle in the over all path could have big consequences. >> storm surge is scary. paul, thank you. america's fastest growing sport might be growing too fast. so many people are playing pickleball there are not enough courts to meet the demand. there is a proposal to build a facility that housed the ford assembly plant in the 1930s. it would have turned into a private club with 16 courts and a lounge but that was squashed and people are frustrated but their fight isn't over just yet.
1:46 am
>> reporter: pickle ball is a passion for darlene. >> nice, edwin. >> reporter: she developed a love for it before it became a huge sport and now she is teaching, playing, and pitching the sport. >> i have an 8-year-old and probably 80-year-olds playing together on the same court. tell me another sport where people can do that. it isn't exist. >> reporter: but she says that pickleball has a bit of a problem. there aren't enough places to play. >> there is a real need for it. >> reporter: and a proposal for a huge pavilion just hit the net. >> you could say it was rejected but i think what was rejected was the verbiage, not the actual facility itself. it was how it was presented. >> reporter: regulators shot down a proposal to turn a
1:47 am
portion of the largely vacant pavilion into a pickleball club with 16 points, arguing it doesn't have a connection to the waterfront and as proposed couldn't serve as a benefit to the general public. michelle is tasked to be the director of pickleball operations at the pavilion and says otherwise. >> it absolutely would serve the public. >> reporter: they are redraft the proposal hoping to provide more to those regulators and the community along the waterfront. >> i wish i could take them and show them what pickleball is. i want them to see the laughter and see the smiles and see that it's so inclusive and divester which is richmond and the bay area. >> it would be really good for the city of richmond. >> reporter: darlene says this match isn't over just yet that pickleball would bring people all over the bay area. >> there are people in marin
1:48 am
who would be thrilled to come play. this would bring so much revenue to richmond. i am looking forward to going to the factory bar and i am looking forward to going into richmond more. i will play pickleball and then go eat because what we do. >> we reached out to the state lands commission to ask for an interview but they declined. we have heard stories of burglaries and home invasions, and now, thieves are coming after the boats on the water in the one east bay arena. >> we have the raiders are gone so we have nothing to get ticked off about. >> and get this. the thieves are operating by boat. we have seen bikes take over the bridge and now, atvs are taking over downtown san

no kidding. those who live along the estuary say there is nothing safe about living on the water. >> it's every week. every week, something's missing something from their boat or their dinghy or out board motor or car. >> reporter: the twist is the thieves are coming by the way of the water, operating small boats, usually at night to steal from the large vessels tied up at the dock. john's apartment overlooks the jack london square marina. >> for the first time i saw a high-speed chase on the water with a police boat pulling over a regular or another boat that was speeding away. >> reporter: jamie camacho was salvaging teak wood from old ships and said he noticed more small boats around the homeless camp at union lake park. >> you wonder where did they get these boats? small boats are expensive. i wonder where they are getting them. i don't know. maybe they are taking what little money they have to
1:53 am
buy them but i know a lot of friends who have had their small boats atmosphere and their outboard motors. >> reporter: people will steal anything these days but damon taylor says outboard motors seem to be the real prize. >> you have to figure a brand new small 10-horsepower engine is $10,000, $15,000, so in the black market you can get a couple thousand for that. >> reporter: some are calling for more police response to the area, taylor takes a pragmatic view. >> they can't handle it on land financially and resource wise. so they can't -- you know. >> reporter: so taylor and his fellow captains do all they can to keep an eye on each other's boats and run off any pirates that may show up which in his view has a nice ring to it.
1:54 am
>> i think it sounds cool to say we have pirates are around here since the raiders are gone. let's go with pirates, then. >> reporter: but the problem is a serious one. some call the boats home and the idea of thieves trying to enter them in the dead of night has a lot of people living in fear. >> oakland police have one full-time maritime officer because they are severely under staffed. police want to finish you have seen this woman, 36-year-old erica brown. she has been missing for over a week and her disappearance is suspicious. she was seen on august 20th and that 45-year-old mark randall was living with her and considered a person of interest in her disappearance. he was seen in a black mercedes-benz sedan. police say that a husband
1:55 am
and father showed up to work like he usually does and ended up in a hospital bed. he was badly beaten after trying to stop someone from stealing from their store. >> reporter: we talked with his family and they call him a kind and honorable man and they don't understand how something like this could happen to him, now fighting for his life in the icu and we talked with residents in the area who hold us that they no longer feel safe in the neighborhood. >> loyal and trustworthy. he treated that store like it was his. it makes no sense why he tried to stop the guy. he would have let him steal whatever they wanted to steal. >> reporter: her father was working at the richmond market when a man tried to steal water and she said he let him go and he tried to steal beer, to, and that's when he tried to stop
1:56 am
him and was beat women a baseball bat. san francisco police arrived at 9:30:00 p.m. and located a 60-year-old male victim lying on the ground, unconscious. >> we heard something was going on, and we were just holding his hands the whole time until he got to the hospital. >> reporter: now, he is fighting for his life with cards and flowers left for him. residents know him as john, and the cards read praying for you and your full recovery praying for you and nancy, his cat. customers know the both of them. >> we live a block away and we come here and play with a super cute cat and get an ice cream cone. >> reporter: she was born here and is now raising her three kids here. >> this is a safe place to come
1:57 am
when they want an ice cream or candy bar or chips. i always felt very comfortable and this is the first place i let my kids walk at night. it was right up the block. >> reporter: that is not the case anymore. she is more vigilant and thinks twice when her daughters want to walk up the street. >> he worked seven days, and i told him not to worry. i have a job. i can support them. i can help them out. he still works, and he needs help. this makes no sense. >> reporter: the family is trying to understand how this could have happened. they want justice but most of all, they want him to get better and they want people to pray for him. >> the family is raising money for his recovery and is begging for anyone who saw something to speak up. we have new video showing
1:58 am
dozens of dirt bikers taking over san francisco streets, popping wheelies in the middle of rush hour traffic. a convoy of police officers were following behind them. you can see them there. but one twitter user said they didn't see them pulling anyone over. we reached out to spd about the strategy but they didn't give us an answer. paul, i noticed it was hazy with an air quality advisory tomorrow. yeah. the smoke drifting down from the north fruit smith checks at the oregon border. and we might see more the day after tomorrow. a look at today's air quality. it wasn't great but it wasn't terrible. a lot of the smoke has been largely elevated, and at ground level we have gotten in the moderate air quality today and likely where we will be tomorrow, and yellow across the board. of the trick is or the
1:59 am
problem is the things will deteriorate on wednesday, and the ground level smoke, that will really intensify heading through the day on wednesday, and that is a lot of smoke. we have to breathe it, and this would be in the unhealthy for sensitive groups in the north bay and east bay as well, and it will be wednesday when the temperatures will increase, so keep that in mind and adjust any outdoor plans accordingly. they will be warm to hot tomorrow and even for the hottest spots, we are talking with a moderate heat risk are the threat of over exertion but expands on wednesday but the good news is we don't have high heat risk areas on wednesday, and the heat risk is contracting on thursday with a few spots on the moderate category and even though will be off the map and finished on friday and temperatures will be in the below average level by the end of the week, so a
2:00 am
rollercoaster ride, and temperatures are in the 60s across the board, 60 in san francisco and a nice evening and no fog just yet. as the weight increase we will not see fog tomorrow. it will be patchy at worst and won't last month with skiing clearing out even with fog in the morning quickly and temperatures will warm up quickly as a result, 50s and low 60s, so not too much of a change from where we are right now, 4 to 5 degrees inland and a mix of 70s, 80s, and 90s with 60s along the coast, and mostly 80s in the santa clara valley but around 90 degrees around morgan hill and temperatures will top out in the low to mid-90s in the tri valley and upper 90s in fairfield, and
2:01 am
mid-80s for oakland and east bay and low 90s with the north bay and a few spots getting hotter especially in napa county, in the upper half of the 90s. warm the next couple days and a quick dive to slightly below average temperatures to finish off the workweek, a mix of 60s an 70s for labor day weekend, three straight days for 70s in the highs for friday, saturday, and sunday, and a warm up for labor day on monday and the warmest temperatures on labor day reaching to the mid-80s inland, and we will contrast that with the 115-degree temperatures last labor day weekend and that's a whole lot better. we'll take this, okay. this is better than the 115-degree highs. >> we are not doing that again. this is not bad. >> this is fun. the holiday weekend looks good. >> thank you, paul. queen bey is making a stop in the bay area this week and how you can get to the beyonce
2:02 am
2:05 am
taylor swift and swifties have come and gone but beyonce is coming to town, bringing her renaissance world tour to levi stadium on wednesday, and tomorrow, the santa clara city council will vote on whether to name her honorary mayor and give her a key to the city. they did the same for taylor swift, and getting to the concert can be difficult so bart has added late night trains from the millbrae administration and vta and caltrain will have service up
2:06 am
to 70 minutes after the concert. >> vern is here. >> we couldn't do anything on the field because beyonce was coming in. >> i will go out on a limb and say she is the most important thing. i know we have to talk sports but queen beyonce. i have a storybook night for the san francisco giants. this guy's heart rate must have been on tilt. kyle harrison's performance was just that. >> you know, it was awesome. just watching the guys on the screen. >> the second career start for harrison in front of friends and family and mom and dad were on the club-level field watching and he struck out the reds order in the first, didn't slow down in the second and ended up striking out the first five batters of the game and
2:07 am
pounded the zone to the harrison section and got run support from patrick bailey, the double off the archway in the third, and thairo estrada scores. harrison reached back and got out of a jam in the fifth, runners in the corners, struck out hawkins to end the inning and struck out 11 in 6 1/3, and he had a dominant performance over the reds, 4-1 the final. nfl, the 49ers' roster will be cut from 90 to 53 tomorrow. and the high-profile move, quarterback trey lance traded to dallas. at the end of the day they have gone all in on brock purdy. >> reminds me of a young drew,
2:08 am
the professionalism, the way he approaches the game and comes to work ask taking the reps, and that is what drew was. and that's why he is a hall of famer. it's a stretch to say that but i have been around that guy and i know what that guy does, and brock has a similar game. >> you will be happy to know that kickoff is in 13 days and a little over nine hours. september 10th can't get here fast enough.
2:11 am
we all do a lot of texting. >> sure. >> i see you all the time. yes. but you -- constantly. his phone blows up on a regular basis but do people still send messages in a bottle? apparently, they are actually doing it and 1 made a 3000- mile journey from ireland to new jersey in 2019, wildwood, new jersey. its greetings from ireland. i have thrown this bottle into the sea to be found another day. i won't know if
2:12 am
someone found this but i hope it's found. i guess the garden state is better than nothing. >> i was going to throw it out but what are the odds of finding this? >> i guess i will keep my new jersey vacation on the books. he is looking for the purpose who wrote letter and the story has blown up on social media and mas it way to ireland. >> i would like to find a into thele and have a genie pop out. >> the show would be looking a little empty. >> i am wondering how it got to ireland. like the gulfstream flows the other way, towards island. i am just saying -- i am skeptical. >> maybe it was -- >> a magic bottle? maybe there was a genie.
