joining me, not a great day to be outside. >> and i will show you one other way of visualizing it, look at the map that shows all the air-quality sensors across the bay. there's a lot more orange showing up, a lot more locations have gone into the unhealthy for sensitive groups, that is the view looking down on golden gate bridge. if we plot it with all of the purple air-quality sensors, we haven't seen that much orange on this map yet this season and it is bay area wide. the general forecast is moderate but there's a lot of places out there today that are reading unhealthy for sensitive groups and even some that are just flat out unhealthy. that is not good for your lungs and i can show you there is a good plume coming our way. and the forecast will stay like this for the next couple of days, but we are still going to be stuck in general. look at the high-resolution smoke forecast, yellows, oranges and red, it doesn't really start to clear out until we get there that

looks great, but that is not until friday. so, the big picture will show us there's still plenty of smoke out there. the other thing, the red flag warning, northbay mountains. this will stay in effect until 8:00 tonight, that because there are strong northerly winds going over the north bay. but again, the same pattern that will clear out the smoke on friday is also going to change the direction of the wind and lower the fire threat. we just have to get through tonight on the red flag warning and probably through about tomorrow on the smoke. back to you. >> we are holding our breath whenever we see that red flag warning. thank you so much. pg&e has shut off power in parts of northern california due to the high fire danger, it impacted thousands of customers across eight counties. small portions of napa county were affected earlier today. meanwhile, on the other side of the country, a very different weather story. idalia is moving through after hitting florida as a powerful category three

hurricane. darren peck is back with us tracking idalia and it has already left a mess in its wake. >> there is still more to go and now the focus is going to be how much rain will drop. we can put that icon to track this, it is now downgraded to a tropical storm but that means it still has a lot of rain that is going to move across that part of the country. look at the accumulated rainfall that is still to go from now through tomorrow. this is still a developing story but of course the main impacts were in florida and along big bend this morning when it came ashore as a major hurricane. so we have a live report and an updated report on what it looks like on the ground from idalia and we are going to go to jason allen with more on that. >> the damage from this storm has been eye-opening for a lot of people here in steinhatchee,

south bay water district is looking to the unhoused for help, keeping its watersheds free of trash and debris. katie nielsen explains why valley waters proposal could be a win-win. >> reporter: this area along the guadalupe river in san jose is home to dozens of people and with little access to trash cans or bathrooms, the concern is the trash and debris from this encampment could end up in the watershed, which goes straight out to the bay. >> what are we supposed to do with it? we can't just throw it anywhere. >> reporter: veronica has called this tent home for more than a year, she says nobody wants to live like this, surrounded by trash. she says she became unhoused when her grandfather passed away and the family lost their home. >> it was unfortunate circumstances that got me here, kind of out of my hands.
3:15 pm
>> reporter: last year she participated in a program called cash for trash where unhoused residents would pay up to $25 on debit cards for collecting bags of trash. now, valley water wants to expand outside city limits to all the unhoused residents who live along the watersheds. >> we want to try to reduce the amount of encampment generated trash and debris from getting into the waterway. once it gets into the waterway, it can go out into the bay and affect the fish and wildlife. >> reporter: they manage more than 300 miles of creeks and streams. and according to their estimates, there are more than 2000 unhoused residents hitting along those waterways. >> these are really inaccessible areas in some spot, it is steep and it is hard to be hauling the trash out. >> reporter: they have removed 2.7 million pounds of trash from encampments along the waterways, which is why coming up with a new program like this is so critical. for the

numbers in the 90s. so, you should be in the low 80s here for daytime highs. it is 93 degrees right now , and when we start the show, we will take a look at the forecast for beyonce tonight, and by the time we get to 5:00, maybe it is 90 and then we will be in the 70s. but, the air quality is the main focus because it does not look pretty. it doesn't look pretty over any part of the bay and we are looking at moderate or unhealthy for sensitive groups. if you look at the forecast for how the air quality is going to behave, i just want to point out some good news, we know it's not the best air quality right now but look what happens when we advance to tomorrow afternoon. we are going to see a strong onshore breeze kick in and watch the colors clear out. that is thursday night into friday morning. so, we are going to get a little bit of a break if that forecast holds. it's just questionable how

long it will last because there's more smoke coming our way after that. here's another way to look at it, big picture, this is primarily from the smith river complex, the big wind picture shows us over the next seven days it's going to be on again off again. it will work in our favor for some time but the northerly wind will kickback up. from now through saturday, it is going to be touch and go. friday morning looks like a good time and maybe we will see more for the weekend, that remains to be seen. here is what is going to drive the change for us, because i haven't even talked about the significant cooldown that is about to come our way. this week weather system right there, it will try to bring in a little rain. you are going to see a fall cold front right there. the first one of the season. rain coming to northwest california and it's coming from the gulf of alaska. this is what it looks like when we start transitioning into

fall. that is the reason we got a bit windy today. maybe a shower possible on saturday but that is not really the focus of the forecast, it is a 20% chance of rain on saturday, don't count on that. what you should be thinking about in addition to protecting yourself from the poor air quality is how much cooler the temperatures are about to get. here is thursday. look what happened on friday, big drop. the daytime highs going down to the low to mid 70s for the inland valleys. for san francisco and oakland, 73 down to 67 on friday, maybe that is not as dramatic but when you look at the north bay valleys from the mid-80s tomorrow to the low 70s on saturday. san jose is in the low 70s on saturday. those numbers are much warmer today. we only kind of start to cooldown tomorrow. thank you. the 49ers quarterback room is officially set and it does not include trey lance or jim e.g. so, what does jimmy garoppolo think about the trade? here is vern
