indoors. >> that is probably a good idea because if you look at the map it was even worse, you were saying, earlier, but we haven't seen it this bad in a while, right? >> no, not since summer 2021. i don't think we had any air quality incidents that were eve close to this. this is the air quality map showing unhealthy for sensitive groups. the north bay had just absolutely unhealthy air qualit today, and it was worse along the coast and in the city. the onshore breeze is helping thing out a little bit, so we have seen some improvement closer to the pacific ocean, but as we head through the rest of tonight, the haze will continue to be reinforced by winds about a mile up or so, bringing in smoke from the smith river complex in northern california, so i think we will still have air quality in the unhealthy fo sensitive groups range. the air district has not posted another spare the air alert for tomorrow. act as if there is one. be cautious with outdoor

social media is supposed to make us feel connected, but for some, especially children and teens, it can have the opposite effect. in fact, one stanford student said that it almost killed her. kelsey thorne has more on her experience with the dark side of social media and how that led her to fight for change. >> reporter: sophie was just 10 years old when she first downloaded instagram. >> i was someone who grew up pretty heavily bullied by my peers and i was told that if i downloaded instagram that could help me fit in and feel connected. >> reporter: but instead of helping her, sophie says the social media platform let her down a path to self-harm. >> it started off with images o very thin models but slowly it transitioned into content that would describe straight up as,
1:52 am
quote unquote, eating disorder behavior encouragement content >> reporter: sophie said she quickly developed an eating disorder and by the time she wa 15 doctors weren't sure if she would survive. >> i was hospitalized 13 times and during one of the hospitalizations i was given tw weeks to live. >> reporter: thankfully through poetry, she had the chance to recover, but state senator nanc skinner says that many kids aren't as lucky. that is why sh is sponsoring a bill to hold social media companies accountable for the harm that she says that the platforms can inflict on users. >> you design these platforms and you have the ability to lessen this harm, that is what we want you to do and that is what sp 680 is doing. >> reporter: it would ban socia media platforms from using
1:53 am
designs, algorithms or features that they know cause harm to users under the age of 16, including self-harm, eating disorders and addiction. socia media platforms would be required to correct any issues within 60 days or face a $250,000 fine. >> they have the ability to fix it and that is what we want the to do. here is an easy way. if you do we will hold you harmles and if not we will hold you responsible. >> reporter: sophie is now a sophomore at stanford and is a supporter of sp 680, so much so that she personally testified o behalf of the bill in front of others in sacramento. >> it felt like a very full circle moment. my 10-year-old self never thought that that is where i would land. she had no idea of the journey she would g through when she downloaded the
1:54 am
app. >> reporter: but now she is working on mental health in america and works with the national social media alliance to push for regulations across the country. she tells me that she expects it will take time t get all the regulations she wants past, but she is confiden that her generation will be the one to get it done. >> so kelsey, what do the socia media companies have to say about the legislation? >> reporter: yeah, so we reache out to both tiktok and meta. meta did not respond but we did get a call from tiktok. they di not directly comment but they sent us the statement saying, quote, we work hard to support the safety and well-being of teens with parental controls, age-appropriate account setting and a dedicated team of more than 40,000 safety professionals. we will keep our platform safe by tackling
1:55 am
industry-wide challenges. >> it is nice to see people taking action to make change fo the better. all right, kelsey, thank you so much. we have an update tonight o the tough mudder race in sonom county that seemed to get a lot of people sick. the health department says they have tracked down 300 cases of peopl getting sick, some of whom had rashes, fevers. health official are doing tests to see if this was a specific kind of bacteria infection. tough mudder had previously said they were looking into the matter also. the turbulence was so bad o a flight from milan to atlanta that some people ended up in th hospital. delta flight 175 landed in atlanta last night an the passenger who shot this video said that she watched as the turbulence launched people into the air. >> i honestly thought that we were crashing. the woman in the aisle in the middle aisle, she had gone up and hit the overhea

compartment. >> that is my worst nightmare. the faa said the airbus a3 50 had severe turbulence and was only 40 miles from the airport when it happened. in all, 11 people had to go to the hospital. in a similar situation in spain, severe turbulence forced a plane headed for the mainland to turn around back to the island of mallorca. in this case, nobody got hurt. now to the blue moon which looked like an orange moon through all the bay area haze, but still very impressive . >> the newer cell phones do a little bit better. you get the professional photographers taking pictures and it looks a lot better. it is that haze tha looks so reminiscent of what we saw in 2020 and 2021. not the view that we want to see. we
1:57 am
want to see the bright , clear sky overhead, but it is impressive nonetheless. hopefully we will see the smoke and haze get out of here over the next couple of days. we wil see some changes starting with significant cooldown that comes tomorrow as the heat dome retreats away from us and eventually drops into northern california. that not only crack the heat dome and sends cooler temperatures towards us but als gives us a chance for a couple sprinkles. let's take a look at futurecast. we will see the fog to some extent with clouds building into the bay area tomorrow afternoon and some showers and thunderstorms possible for far northern california every afternoon. the rain would be a good thing in terms of the fire threat but th problem is thunderstorms or lightning, if there is not
1:58 am
enough rain accompanying the lightning, that would allow mor fires to get started and exacerbate the problems we are seeing with the fire consuming tens of thousands of acres and sending more smoke towards us. on saturday we have a chance fo more radar freckles, not going to amount to a whole lot. as th system approaches we will feel the onshore breeze kicking in after midday tomorrow. inland i 15 to 20 miles per hour but 25 to even 45 along the coast by late thursday afternoon. that will help to improve air qualit which is still not great for most of the day tomorrow. this tracks just the surface level smoke. finally by late tomorrow afternoon you see that getting pushed further to the east and by friday this is some good news, there are indications tha another wave of smoke would dro down towards us. that looks lik it will stay just to the north. right now there is the haze on the horizon. temperatures a mix of 60s and 70s at the moment. w end up mostly in the 60s with a
1:59 am
few upper 50s by tomorrow morning. temperatures tomorrow will warm up to what is normal. 60s along the coast and a mix o 70s and low 80s down the peninsula and the south end of the bay. mid 80s in the santa clara valley, low 80s in the tri-valley and the hotspots onl get up to 90 degrees in the delta. low to mid 70s for both san francisco and oakland with low 80s until you go further north and inland with a better chance of hitting 90 degrees. temperatures back to lowest levels by friday and saturday. the outside chance of a sprinkl or shower but i would not rearrange any outdoor plans. we do warm-up through labor day weekend back to near average high temperatures on monday, so a mix of 60s and 70s around the bay and mostly 80s further inland. our temperatures peaked next week on tuesday as we star the abbreviated work week but n return to the upper 90s. i thin the lowest we get as low 90s, s

so much 49ers quarterback drama. >> so, so much. we got a first look at trey lance in cowboys uniform after he was traded to dallas last week. it looks really weird. yesterday, jimmy garoppolo, now with the raiders appeared on a sports illustrate podcast and he was asked for hi reaction to the news and he did not hold back.
2:04 am
>> how do you think san francisco has handled those quarterback situations? >> how do you think they have handled them? weird situation but a lot of weird situations i san francisco. we believe it at that. >> i hear you, jimmy. not surprising that he had some choice words after the organization decided to go with lance as the starter. fast forward a year and jimmy, lance they are on new teams. when asked about it in santa clara, kyle shanahan sounds like he doesn't lose any sleep over jimmy's comments. >> i'm really not concerned about his comments. we made the move to a younger quarterback and that is what he did. we now have a different younger quarterback. that is the situation. i don't think it is that we are. it is unusual if i doesn't work out, but i don't think that is weird. i just think that is unusual. >> meanwhile, brock purdy, the younger quarterback that ended
2:05 am
up winning the job for this season is ready to go for week one of the steelers but the tea is still using caution with him as shanahan explains, his throa count was broken down to ensure that he is well rested for the opener. >> we plan on trying to cut tha in half, so it will be the same thing today before practice and tomorrow. he is fine. his numbers are just cut in half. >> i have not heard of a throat count. i have heard of a pitch count, which brings us to baseball and the giants. alex cobb one hit away from a no-hitter. i almost had tickets. was there any magic left today? this is cristian encarnacion from pleasant hill in the eighth with a runner on and that? that is a big fly, just outside the reach of wade meckler. this offense accounte for three of the reds' four runs. the giants start a

four-game series in san diego tomorrow and that is a good thing, because when they hit th road to open that homestand the have the pads for many of those games, so they need the help. >> this is my favorite sport. when you think of nebraska sports, which i admit i don't think of much, apparently you are supposed to think of cornhusker football, because th state basically shuts down on saturday. so what is interestin to see a crowd this big for nebraska women's volleyball. >> no joke. they crashed the record for people to watch it women's sporting event. >> people in other countries ar watching this. >> memorial stadium was actuall past capacity as the five-time ncaa champions swept in-state rival omaha. >> that is bigger than any crow but football has had. the recor was 91,585 which was set back i

2014. so cool to see. the intro when they walked out gave me goosebumps. it was awesome. >> also, volleyball is underrated. >> it is so fun to watch live. >> i will take that over football. i know i am not supposed to say that here but i know you feel the same way. matt, thank you. the beehive wasn't just buzzing in santa clara tonight. this was the much less fun scen outside of toronto after more than 5 million bees fell off of a truck. police in burlington, ontario had to call in beekeepers to round them up. they are asking drivers to keep their windows up. these kind of look like hummingbirds if you don't look too closely, but they are actually mobs and they are here in the bay area. they have been all over west marin county. the have wing spans over three inches and a straw -like mouth.

this next one is one of the weirdest things we have seen in a long time, and the video speaks for itself here. a drive in nebraska had that as a passenger! hello? 911? it is a full-sized bowl named howdy doody in the van. the driver wa pulled over. the officer though he was responding to a small calf in the car, not a gigantic hole. it already had bullhorns as a hood ornament and the ball lived up to his name because he went all over the back of the car. the experience could not have been comfortable. apparently the driver was just cited and told to steer clear o town. >> it says call 911 in the back
2:12 am
>> yes, call 911 immediately! you would think the boat would be taken out of the car but he was actually set to continue on i don't know about this! this feels like a bad choice. >> isn't that the mascot of you beloved college? >> how dare you? so did to me. an aggie at heart. horns down, man. horns down forever. we are at almost that time! college football saturday! >> they will be watching, i wil be doing something else. thank you for watching -- crying in m room! the late show with stephe colbert continues streaming on cbs news bay area. good night.
