millions of americans are hitting the skies and roads for ne last summer get away, despite the high prices for tickets and gas. how airports are handling the labor day crush. and riding shotgun. the story behind this unusual traffic stop in nebraska. good morning, and good to be with you, i'm anne-marie green. we start this morning in the southeast where president biden is expected to visit florida tomorrow to survey the damage from hurricane idalia. this remarkable drone footage over the coastal town of horseshoe beach shows the catastrophic damage brought on by the hurricane-force winds and floodwaters. before heading out to the atlantic yesterday idalia flooded the east coast and left thousands without power. jared hill has more from morehead city in north carolina. jared, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. whether it was good fortune or good preparation, this part of

massive flooding idalia left behind. the financial toll of idalia's path of destruction up the southeast is expected to be as high as $20 billion. during a visit to fema yesterday president biden said he will travel to florida on saturday. >> to the people of florida and throughout the southeast, i'm here to make clear that our nation has your back. >> reporter: national guard and search and rescue steams are clearing debris and handing out supplies as the road to recovery begins. and president biden is also calling on congress to replenish fema's disaster relief fund which could run dry by the middle of this month and that could mean, anne-marie, a delay in aid to some communities hit by natural disasters. folks are going to need some help. >> we are not out of hurricane season yet. jared hill, thank you. today is projected to be one of the busiest travel days of the year ahead of the long labor day weekend. for many that means the final trip before summer ends. more than a quarter of a million

flights are scheduled through tuesday. kris van cleave reports on how airports are dealing with the travel rush. >> reporter: passengers showing up at lax found relatively smooth flying coast to coast after hurricane idalia raced through the southeast. >> this is like the smoothest travel day i have had in a long time.pusually there's been so m delays. >> reporter: 57% of americans say they plan to take a trip for labor day capping the busiest summer travel season on record. the tsa has already screened more than 227 million passengers since memorial day and expect another 14 million by tuesday. >> took the kids out of school, trying to get that last summer break. >> reporter: despite travel headaches in july, the nation's airlines canceled 21% fewer flights compared to last summer, but delays are up with one in four leaving late. transportation secretary pete buttigieg. >> there's still a lot of work to do and a long way to go, but given everything that the system has been up against this summer, it's performed quite well.

>> reporter: most americans will be driving to their labor day desti destination. >> we usually never travel on the holidays, because of the crowd and the gas prices, but we have a friend and we just wanted to get out of the heat. >> reporter: gas prices are averaging nearly $3.83 a gallon. >> no matter how expensive gas prices are, when people decide to go on vacation they budget in the price of gas. they're going to take that trip. >> that was kris van cleave reporting. a search is under way for a convicted murderer who escaped from a prison outside philadelphia. 34-year-old dannell know cavalcante escaped from the chester county prison yesterday. he was found guilty of stabbing his former girlfriend to death in front of her children, he is also wanted for a murder in brazil. he was waiting to be transferred to a state prison in pennsylvania. police in austin, texas, say a shooting at a shopping center has left one person dead and

it happened yesterday afternoon near the arboretum mall. investigators say the shooter was also killed. there is no word on a motive or how the shooter died. two people did suffer minor injuries as well. a federal judge handed down some of the longest sentences yet in cases from the january of capitol riot investigation. ed o'keefe reports. two former leaders of the far right extremist group the proud boys were sentenced to more than a decade in prison for seditious conspiracy. >> reporter: prosecutors said joseph biggs and his co-conspirators were the drives force behind the violence that unfolded at the capitol. biggs boasted about storming the buildings. >> january 6 will be a day in infamy. >> reporter: but he wept in court, handed a 17 year sentence in prison after being convicted alongside proud boys leader enrique tarrio of engaging in seditious upon sear i si to keep then president president donald trump in office. judge kelly said biggs was part

of a mob that brought an entire branch of government to heel. also sent ens it had zachary rio seen here with biggs. he was sentenced to 15 years, less than the 30 prosecutors wanted. they say rio spent weeks organizing the capitol attacks. in a separate trial january 6 defendant granden fellow was convicted on five counts but jurors revealed they're concerned about their personal safety writing to the judge to confirm fellows doesn't have any of their personal information that's usually shared with attorneys on both sides. fellows is representing himself in court. mcfadden would only say that jurors personal information is destroyed at the end of the case. forming president donald trump pleaded not guilty for allegedly trying to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election in georgia. trump waived his right to appear at next week's arraignment, also

asked the judge to sever his case from some of the other co-defendants who are seeking a speedy trial. his attorney says an october trial date would not give trump enough time to prepare, violating his constitutional rights. the death toll from a fire in johannesburg, south africa, could rise as crews search for more victims. at least 74 people were killed, including 12 children and thousands more hurt. tina krause reports, authorities are narrowing down how the blaze started. >> reporter: iowans videos shows crowds of south africans gathered outside the five-story building in johannesburg as it went up in flames. dense plumes of smoke could be seen rising over the rooftop of the run down apartment building mostly occupied by people who are homeless. this resident said his sister died in the flames, his young niece was thrown from the building and it saved her life. >> the people they --

andrew les tore face charges including first degree assault. he shot then 16-year-old ralph yarl in the head and arm earlier this year after the teen went to the young house. lester has pleaded not guilty. his attorney says he was terrified and acting in self-defense. "politico" says republican senators are considering a special meeting to discuss their leadership after mitch mcconnell froze in public for a second time. on wednesday mcconnell stood speechless in front of reporters at an event in kentucky. it kams weeks after a similar incident in washington. a handful of gop senators are weighing whether to force an internal debate about their leadership's future. billboard says nick carter is facing a third sexual assault lawsuit. the unnamed woman claims carter assaulted her on multiple occasions in 2003 when she was 15 years old, including on his yacht and a tour bus.
