festival in nevada into a muddy mess with one death reported. why tens of thousands of revelers are being told to be told to conserve food and water. president biden tours the hurricane zone in florida. what he told survivors and why governor desantis was a no show. new details about jimmy buffett's death. what the beloved singer's family revealed and how the parrot heads are mourning. >> jimmy, jimmy, jimmy. ♪ good morning. thanks for starting your day with us. i'm matt piper. anne-marie green is off on this labor day. we begin with tens of thousands of people stranded at the burning man festival in nevada. heavy rain over the weekend turned the annual desert party into a survival challenge for some. the grounds turned into thick mud, making travel nearly impossible. at least one death was reported. roads were closed for safety reasons. officials hope to reopen them when conditions improve. haley ott joins us now with the

latest. haley, quite a scene. >> reporter: good morning, matt. when you think of the desert, you may think of hot, dry sand. that's exactly the opposite of what people got when they attended burning man this year, wet weather turned the popular festival into a mud bath. michael and olga davidson were among thousands stuck in nevada's black rock desert over the weekend after heavy rains turned the ground at burning man into a s soup of thihick, stick mumuck. >> bicicycle can't't move anymy >> r reporter: the pair decidedo make a b break for i it. >> we are walking out. >> reporter: they made it out, but thousands remain trapped on the festival grounds, known as the playa. >> we are not allowed out of the playa. the gates are locked. we're okay. we have enough tuna for a week. >> reporter: the annual burning man festival usually attracts around 80,000 artists and activists who create a temporary community in the nevada desert. now, with the roads swamped and impassable, those stuck have

limited supplies and no working toilets. at least one death has been reported. jackson downing made it to the reno airport on sunday. >> i think a lot of us, new people, didn't realize if the rain does get bad, you can't leave. that never crossed a lot of our minds. >> reporter: those still stranded, they're making the best of it. justin schuman has been in the desert for 11 days. >> what i have seen personally is resilience. i've seen a huge amount of people coming together. i have seen strangers hugging strangers. i have seen people gifting things to others. >> reporter: the weather is expected to clear today, allowing organizers to open the gates for departures. marking the end for some of a stay in the desert they'll surely never forget. as the name suggests, the burning man festival usually ends with the burning of a giant sculpture of a man. organizers say with the clear weather, that's now scheduled for tonight. matt? >> haley ott in new york. thank you. president biden surveyed the devastation in florida over the weekend. days after hurricane idalia

ravaged parts of that state. the president and first lady arrived saturday and toured the damage in the small community of live oak where they met with residents and local officials but not with governor ron desantis. instead, the republican presidential candidate was handing out food about 75 miles away. president biden said he was not disappointed by the governor's absence and said desantis had helped plan his visit. mr. biden has cleared the way for federal disaster relief funds as the state works to rebuild. we are learning more about what caused the death of legendary singer/song writer jimmy buffett. a statement posted to his website revealed he died in the hamptons in new york on friday after a four-year fight with a rare form of skin cancer. about 2,500 people gathered for a procession in key west, florida, yesterday to honor buffett who was a long-time resident. he was best known for his hit song "margaritaville" which he turned into an empire. of restaurants, resorts and

frozen foods. jimmy buffett was 76 years old. overseas now where there's a major shakeup in leadership in the war in ukraine as its president has announced the defense minister will be replaced this week. he said the ministry needs, quote, nw approaches. russian president vladimir putin meantime is set to meet with turkey's president today to discuss resuming food shipments from ukraine. our deborah is in kharkiv where fighting is intensifying. >> reporter: these young boys have come to bury their father. yevgeny hutnik, who died fighting in donetsk ten days ago. their grief is still so raw. it is hard to let go. his casket is lowered into the ground alongside other fallen soldiers from kharkiv. the piece of land carved out for them at the cemetery just keeps on growing. in the short space of time that we've been here, two new bodies were brought to be buried.

anand when youou finish, y yow you hahad somethining to ea. four astronauts returned to earth early this morning after spending close to six months on the international space station. the spacex crew dragon capsule splashed down in the atlantic ocean east of jacksonville, florida, at 12:17 local time. two u.s. usa naughts a russian cosmonaut and a crew mate from the uae are back on the ground. their trip home was delayed by a day thanks to bad weather. a prison protest, college petition demanding action and a killer on the loose caught on camera. those are some of the headlines on the morning news stand. the philadelphia inquirer reports police appear to be closing in on the convicted killer who escaped a suburban philadelphia prison. 34-year-old danelo cavalcante was spotted shortly after midnight saturday by someone's home security camera. he was just a mile and a half away from the chester state prison where he escaped thursday morning.

cavalcante was sentenced to life in prison last month for killing his ex-girlfriend. he is also wanted in his native brazil for another murder and is considered extremely dangerous. politico says many students at the university of north carolina are critical of the school's response to last week's active shooter emergency. students at the chapel hill campus say not enough information was shared with them during a three-hour lockdown last monday. there's now a petition with hundreds of signatures demanding substantial and immediate improvements to unc's active shooter response protocol. a graduate student was arrested and charged in the shooting death of an associate professor. the star tribune reports a minnesota state prisoner remains on lockdown today after 100 inmates staged a protest yesterday. officials say they refused to return to their cells for several hours. advocates say the inmates were fed up with the excessive heat, lack of air-conditioning and limited access to showers and ice over the past two months. prison officials located in the minneapolis/st. paul metro area
