brewery set on bringing back the original. >> from kpix this is the late news with sara donchey on cbs news bay area. >> hello, i am sara donchey. these are the kinds of activities most of us forget about, but in oakland it is these simple things that have become too risky. this afternoon a woman who was out for a walk in lake merritt ended up in the hospital fighting for her life all because she happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. >> it was like loud firecrackers like when you let off a string of firecrackers. then i saw a woman on the ground . >> she was shot. police said she got caught in the middle of a rolling gun battle between two cars. the cops said she had nothing to do with that and she was an innocent bystander. she no she was in critical condition this evening.

and in oakland a group of kids who just want to play football say it is too dangerous to do even that. the east bay panthers have a home field but instead they are driving an hour away because of what they are afraid will happen in their own neighborhood. betty yu joins us with the story. >> reporter: sara, as of now, this oakland team has nowhere to practice. one parent that i spoke with said that his child is feeling anxious about ever returning to that field. two shootings in one week. in and around this park in east oakland. both happen at the same time in the evening, when kids with the east bay panthers football team were practicing. >> how many gunshots did you hear? >> too many to count. that is what caught my attention. >> reporter: chad provost was sitting in his car waiting for
1:41 am
his son carter, wearing the number 3 jersey. he said the park was full of people, including kids playing basketball. >> so some coaches and parents were in the park and got all the kids to get down, which frustrated my son. i know that he is affected. >> reporter: oakland police said that while they found evidence of a shooting, they did not find victims. then last week coach and director levi jones said he told the kids to get down on the ground as more than 100 gunshots rang out. opd said homes and cars were hit by gunfire. >> it was horrible. people with masks came up on the park and another group of people, adults, came on motorcycles and started shooting up the park. >> reporter: luckily no one was injured, but the team and parents were so terrified this past weekend that the east bay panthers were bused to play in santa rosa for what would have been a home game.
1:42 am
>> i know a lot of our kids are traumatized. they have ptsd and they are losing sleep. >> reporter: leroy says he wants opd to increase patrols in the area. >> i feel the oakland police department has not done anything to secure the safety for these kids have a place to practice. what we want to do is get the kids off the street so they don't turn into these people that are shooting. >> as someone born and raised here you can tell that it is worse. i don't even allow my children to walk to the grocery store near our house. when i was growing up i would walk to the corner store that was in our neighborhood all the time. >> oh my gosh. just hearing them say 100 gunshots and you imagine yourself as a parent if you had to drop off your kid or even stay there with your kid. i can't even imagine what that would feel like. so you mentioned that they have this practice tomorrow. what are they going to do?
1:43 am
>> reporter: so the president and the coach have both said that they have been trying diligently to reach out to neighboring cities, for example san leandro and berkeley. so far they have had no luck because these teams have fields to play on. so far there is no one that has stepped up but they are hoping that today is a holiday and maybe somebody will come through tomorrow. they have practice tomorrow evening. >> hopefully someone sees the story and they can lend a hand because that is a desperate situation for sure. i would not want my kid playing in conditions like that. thank you for sharing. better late than never in the nevada desert. the man burns tonight after a wet and muddy festival that led to a shelter in place for days at burning man only to be topped off with the biggest traffic jam you will ever see in the middle of nowhere. thousands of people waiting along the only route out. but even with all these difficulties some people said this was all part of the fun of a festival like burning
1:44 am
man. >> reporter: the next time you complain about rush-hour traffic, picture this. moving day at burning man. nobody was really burning fast, though. tens of thousands of campers were stuck in gridlock with just one road to leave the isolated black rock desert. >> we just spent four hours in line to get out and people that are in line now, getting in line now might spend 12 hours. >> reporter: two months of rain fell in one day, so much so that festivalgoers had to shelter in place and nobody was allowed to drive in or out because of this, mud so thick that it was hard to even walk in. for people who ditched the shoes they rest chemical burns because the mud is alkaline. >> for me and my husband this is an escape from the hard things and this is kind of hard. >> reporter: the people who wanted to leave early had to go on an excursion, including dj
1:45 am
diplo and chris rock who hiked through the mud for miles and then caught a ride with a fan. the annual burning man festival attracts artists and free spirits with the counterculture and the wealthy, bringing them all to the remote nevada desert to hang out, campout and practice what organizers call radical self-reliance. this concept was really put to the test this year. for some, food and supplies dwindled and the port-a-potties could not be emptied. millbrae resident chris said he was one of the lucky ones. >> great infrastructure. we have shelter. we have heat. >> reporter: but some said it was all part of the experience and that a little or a lot of model was not going to stop them from having a good time. we have an update on what happened with chris. he ended up getting a ride to the bus

depot but there was still a three hour wait to get checked in and take a plastic-covered seat on the bus. and the burners had to take another shuttle to the bus because the depot was too muddy. lots of struggle there. good news for burners heading into the bay area. they will not get into a jam heading through solano county. westbound i-80 is back open following a weekend closure for road repairs. san francisco is already shutting down its streets for dream force. harold will be close between third and fourth for the mega convention at moscone he center and it needs to be a hit because the salesforce ceo told the chronicle that there is no guarantee it will be back if the problems with drug use and homelessness don't improve.

1:49 am
happened two weeks after the california public utilities commission approved the expansion of cruze and waymo service despite concerns over safety from the fire department. >> there is no dialogue happening. it is pretty much one side being dictated by the tech titans and the cpuc is allowing that to happen. >> cruze is said to be doing its part by installing vocal charging stations. in this economy, why would a business revive a competitor? a south bay brewery is trying to bring back a san francisco icon. plus, a bunch of partygoers learned just how much a pier could hold. back into the 80s and still 70s for inland parts of the bay area there is a warm-up further

weekend and now we are back to normal and there is not going to be much change as we go through the rest of the week, so let's go through the details. the changes we do see will be small, basically just settling into normal early september weather pattern with high temperatures remaining their average and the fog behaving the way it is supposed to, back and forth every night and every morning. we would see a bit of a warm-up further down the line. average high as 87 degrees and we will be within two degrees all the way to the first half of the weekend. still a bit of a baby warm-up but like every warm-up we see this summer it is not going to last very long as we head into next week. beyond the scope of the seven-day forecast but it does look like the forecast is trending in that direction. air quality improved and it stayed in the good category, likely to remain that way as we head to the rest of this week. so the smoke being produced by the fires burning in far northern

california, it is being pushed further to the north, so air quality will remain in the good category through the rest of the work week. there is the fog trying to spread out as we head for the rest of tonight. temperatures are low to mid 60s and comfortably cool this evening. the fog will make a push into some of the inland valleys by tomorrow morning. where it does make its way inland it will not last too long. i think it will even back away from the coast as we head into early afternoon. enjoy the sunshine well it emerges and the fog will then spread back in. temperatures tonight are popping out in the 50s almost across the board and antioch is the one spot at 60 with everybody else in the 60s. tomorrow everybody is within one degree of the normal high. 60s on the coast, mostly 70s along the bay with mostly 80s inland. even the hottest spots in the delta only get up to
