york. food morning, jarred. >> good shanelle. >> that exodus from burning man is not expected to be a quick one. there was about a seven-hour wait to get out of that desert camp after that thick mud had thousands stranded for days. the iconic burning man litup the nevada sky one day late, marking the end of this year's chaotic festival. thousands are just beginning the long trek out of the desert, packing the only road out. unexpected heavy rains friday turned the annual counterculture camping experience into a muddyfest, stranding festivalgoers, forcing them to shelter in play and ration supplies. >> the first days were all fun and games and then it got super real. people were afraid. it was muddy. >> we just spent four hours in line to get out. >> reporter: rob levitsky says he's been coming to burning man for two decades and plans to come again, but he wishes organizers had given more warning about the weather forecast ahead of this year's gathering. >> i'm mostly prepared for hot

desert, dusty wind and not cold and wet and muddy. >> reporter: the impassable mud led to a temporary vehicle ban. port-a-potties quickly became unusable. some wrapped their feet in plastic while others went barefoot, risking chemical burns from the alkaline mud. >> i had an amazing time. would i want it to do it for another three or four days as i have the last three or four? never. >> reporter: even in regular years it can take up to 12 hours to leave burning man. this year organizers are urging people to stagger their departures as they make the sl sloggy start out. >> shanelle, there was one death, but it does not appear to be related to the weather situation. >> jarred hill live for us in new york. thank you. well, summer is going out with a sizzle as temperatures rise well above average for much of the central part and eastern part of the country. yesterday nearly 170 million

americans sweltered in temperatures above 90 degrees. and as cbs's meg oliver reports, all that heat is impacting the start of the school year. >> reporter: as extreme heat continues to roast new york, fans and players at the u.s. open tennis championships in flushing are trying to cope. >> it's doable when you have a fan. >> reporter: today hit 90, about 10 degrees higher than normal. ahead of the first day of school, the philadelphia public school district announced early dismissals through wednesday for students who attend schools with little or no air-conditioning. cooling centers are open in washington, dc, where a hot weather emergency is in effect, but 98 degrees hasn't stopped tourists like lee and tammy robby who came from boise to visit the national monuments. >> we stop and sit down once in a while and try to find some shade. the breeze is wonderful if you

can get some. >> reporter: the heat stretches all the way from the midwest to the east coast with record-breaking temperatures across five states. people brave the temperatures at the minnesota state fair on sunday, hitting a record-tying 97 degrees, 20 degrees higher than usual. >> as i feel myself getting too hot, i just make sure we go to the shade and cool down, drink water. >> reporter: more than a thousand miles away in new jersey, some headed to the shore, hoping to find relief in the waves. >> how was the weather down at the shore? >> amazing. >> it was amazing today. it was really hot. the waves were nice. >> the waves were crashing. >> reporter: meg oliver, cbs news, long branch, new jersey. first lady jill biden has tested positive for covid-19. the white house says she's experiencing some mild symptoms and will remain at the couple's home in delaware for now. the first lady had planned to start the school year today at northern virginia community college where she teaches english and writing. the white house says president joe biden is negative for now but will continue testing regularly and keeping monitored

for symptoms. the former leader of the far right extremist group the proud boys will be sentenced today for his role in the january 6th attack on the u.s. capitol. 39-year-old enrique tarrio was found guilty of seditious conspiracy earlier this year. prosecutors are seeking 33 years behind bars. that would be the longest sentence handed out so far among hundreds of capitol riot cases. a meeting between the leaders of russia and north korea is now in the works. cbs news has learned kim jong-un and vladimir putin will meet this month in advancing arms negotiations between the two countries. cbs's ed o'keefe has more. >> repeporter: word d of the scheduduled meeting g between k jong-u-un and vladimir putin cos as the biden administration has been warning that arms negotiations between north korea and russia are actively advancing. u.s. officials provided evidence last week that russia's defense minister had recently traveled to north korea to try to

convince pyongyang to s sell artillery ammunition to russia. after the visit, putin and kim exchanged letters, pledging to increase their bilateral cooperation. a kremlin spokesman says kremlin and north korea have mutual relations and contacts are being made by both delegations. they sent delegations in july, the first visits by top foreign officials since the covid pandemic began in 2020. president biden ignored shouted questions about a potential arms deal, but the white house has been warning north korea, officially known as the democratic people's public of korea or dprk, not to help russia. >> we urge dprk to cease its negotiations with russia and we will continue to identified russia and attempts to acquire arms from dprk or any other state that's prepared to support

the section near the rock slide has been shut down as a safety precaution. an amazing rescue after a driver went missing for days. and some diners got quite the scare when a vehicle plowed three through the restaurant. those are some of the big headlines on the morning newsstand. the "l.a. times" reports l.a. dodgers pitcher julio urias is facing felony domestic violence charges. he was arrested late sunday night and released yesterday morning on $50,000 bond. the dodgers say they're still learning the facts about the case, but urias will not be traveling with the team for now. he was also arrested for battery back in 2019 but avoided prosecution by completing a domestic counseling program. major league baseball is expected to launch an investigation. the "houston chronicle" says 23 people were hurt when a driver plowed through the wall of a busy denny's restaurant. images from the scene show the entire car inside the dining area of this suburban houston restaurant. police say the crash happened

yesterday morning, leaving some people with severe injuries, but all, they say, are expected to survive. the 30-year-old driver was not hurt. the cause of this accident is still under investigation. and "people" magazine has an amazing story of survival in southern california. a driver there rescued from the bottom of a ravine. the kern county fire department said the man spent almost five days at the bottom of this 100-foot ravine before being found by rescue crews on saturday. firefighters say the man became trapped after crashing his pickup truck last tuesday. it's unclear what led to that crash. he was airlifted to a nearby hospital. no word on his condition. coming up, the music world loses another great. we remember the man who gave us hits like "dream weaver" and "l"love is alilive." stayay with us.. you're watatching the e "cbs mog nenews." yoyou're watchching the " "cbs g nenews."

senior league ballplayers in north kansas city, missouri, shattered the record for longest baseball game. two teams made up of 60 players each battled it out from thursday all the way until yesterday afternoon. this was all meant to raise money for various charities. reports of so-called smash-and-grab incidents have been on the rise in california, but over the weekend, some jewelry store owners fought back against one suspect, and this was all caught on camera. k-kal's laurie perez has more. >> reporter: the video of california's latest fight back against the smash-and-grab is intense. three members of the all-family staff punching, kicking, and swinging at a man who they say pepper sprayed the almonte store and started smashing their showcases with a hammer until they chased him out. we spoke with one of the owners, her arms still covered in oily
