there was a time when union square was the place to be if you wanted to shop or dine out in san francisco and opening up shop there was a huge deal. it was a high-ticket real estate, high-traffic area. now it seems like you see more for lease signs than ever before, but one of the biggest celebrity chefs in the game saw that as an opportunity to bet on a neighborhood that a lot of people seemed to be abandoning. our betty yu met with tyler florence, who is hoping to open not one the two cafes. >> reporter: celebrity chef tyler florence is partnering with the city to open not one but two cafes in the heart of union square as a part of the plan to revitalize downtown and demoted as a global shopping and dining destination. >> we want this to be a cultural impact and make a big difference to the city of san francisco and really, even from a citizens' standpoint, lean in. we cannot complain
1:40 am
about it or point fingers. i think it is everyone's collective responsibility, pick a neighborhood. >> reporter: the rt is no cafes will be called miller and lucks provisions. the stockton side of the plaza will feature an eatery with brunch options. this space has been vacant since 2020. the powell street side will feature european-style pastries and will add 140 seats in the courtyard. he hopes that will also turn into a major event and theater space. >> i think we will do thousands of covers per day. >> reporter: it is a project he hopes will bring new life into union square and counter the doom loop associated with downtown san francisco. >> i think people need to look in the mirror every day and realize that we cannot live like this anymore, with crime and car vandalization and theft and robbery. i think on the
1:41 am
other side of the coin is this. >> reporter: in the last 16 months, mayor london breed has said the city has made progress towards making streets cleaner and safer. >> we have created one of the largest economic powerhouses in the world. we cannot fix homelessness in san francisco, we cannot fix this problem? i think we can. >> reporter: the lease will go before the san francisco parks and recreation committee for consideration next month. the goal is to open both projects by late october or early november. >> i want san francisco to be the place i fell in love with when i moved here back in 2007. we are going to make it happen.
1:42 am
we will make the city proud. i promise you. this will be a spectacular location. >> reporter: so while these cafes are still in the works, hotels upland just opened up its new restaurant, serving up gourmet smash burgers and loaded milkshakes that you can make boozie if you want to. >> it is important for people to understand some of the negative headlines that grab attention. we are part of a new wave that's coming alive. >> at least 24 new businesses have opened up in the union square in the last year and a half. for those who live and work downtown, a new bar is opening in the financial district with a very new feature. a martini button, or kind of a martini switch. booths have switches that allow you to summon a

champagne or martini carts to your table. a peninsula driver shot and wounded at the height of the afternoon rush. he told chp he heard about five gunshots all coming from a gray bmw. two bullets hit him on the neck and he is expected to be okay. the suspects are still out there tonight and investigators are not sure if this was targeted or just a case of wrong place, wrong time. no class tomorrow at skyline high school in oakland after shots were fired on campus. the superintendent says the campus will be closed. police said they got a call about gunshots on campus at 11: 30 a.m. and students had to barricade themselves in their classrooms. police searched the campus, found a gun and arrested two people. students we talked to said they heard the gunshots during class. >> this is crazy. i don't feel safe. >> everybody was running and they were telling us you got to go in lockdown. stay in your classrooms. it was so freaking
1:44 am
scary. >> parents had to wait outside, probably anxiously, for their kids until they were released a couple of hours later. osd said in a statement that we are waiting for these violent incidents to end in our city, immediately. we will evaluate all factors of our response and make adjustments were necessary. we have an update on the oakland youth football team forced to abandon their home field after multiple shootings. parents, coaches and kids are so rattled that the east bay panthers went all the way to santa rosa to play what should've been a home game. the team was able to practice tonight at madison middle school but they are still looking for a long-term solution. in san francisco it is very common to see people lying on the sidewalk. so common, in fact, that some people just walk by without a second
1:45 am
thought. for those who do stop and want to help, how to help might not always be obvious. the city just started an okay to call campaign to help people determine when it is appropriate to call 911. the city wants you to call 311 for sidewalks being blocked by tents or trash, but if someone seems to be having a major health crisis they say you should still call 911. >> more of us feel like we are empowered and have some guidance on what we might do, then there might be more responding to situations that are an accidental overdose. >> reporter: there were 346 accidental overdose deaths during the last five months of the year. and tonight pharmacies across the country and the bay area are stocking narcan for the first time. the hope is that making the overdose spray available to everyone will save lives. one san mateo county mom
1:46 am
who lost her son to fentanyl tells jocelyn moran that this is a big step in the right direction, but there are more steps to take. >> this was one of:'s last school pictures. >> reporter: liz walker lost her son to an accidental fentanyl overdose. he had just started his senior year at high school in belmont. >> this was what we sent out to everyone. i think that that smile is what so many people remember. he came out smiling , except for the last year and a half of his life. >> reporter: liz and her husband only knew that he had been smoking weed. they did not think he had been experimenting with other drugs. >> he became addicted and on august 9th 2021 my husband found him face down in his room
1:47 am
and he had taken a really small amount of cocaine that was largely fentanyl and he was gone. >> reporter: now liz is working to spread awareness as much as she can so that no other family has to go through the pain they felt. but she also wants people to understand the dangers out there. >> i hope that by spreading awareness more young people will understand that it is not worth the risk. they are not getting what they are being sold. >> reporter: high schools in san mateo county now have narcan on hand and some staff have been trained on how to use it. >> all those who would be at the front line of maybe having to use it are trained. >> reporter: nancy mcgee is the san mateo county superintendent
1:48 am
of public schools. she says they are spreading information to parents and student leaders are participating in conversations. this is all part of it, but liz walker says that mental health needs to be talked about, too. >> the mental health crisis has not gone away. kids that are feeling that kind of pain and desperation are more likely to turn to illicit substances, which are very easy to get on snapchat or instagram or whatever social media. >> reporter: she is sharing colin's story to help others, but she also wants others to remember him for his kind heart. >> he was funny but he was so loved. i hope that his short life did have an impact in a way that we will never fully know. >> reporter: because now others are hearing his story and are making decisions that could change lives. >> what a tough thing for a mom
1:49 am
to talk about. right now narcan sells for about $40 per package but one bay area lawmaker is fighting to cap that it $10. people slog through hours through a muddy mess to escape burning man and tonight some burners who documented the journey tell us that they will absolutely go back. plus, what would you do if $5000 fell into your lap. for one bay area thrift store, there was no question. we finish off what has been a normal early september day. temperatures were anywhere from 59 in pacifica to hire. we take a look at where things might change down the line in our first alert forecast. their house fell into

well, the mass exodus from burning man has finally thinned out after the rain -soaked playa released cars and rvs from its muddy grip. traffic was so congested that it took some people over seven hours to drive five miles. some of those burners are heading back to the bay area tonight and they told our juliette goodrich about the nightmare trek out and why they cannot wait to go back.
1:53 am
>> reporter: the long drive home. what is normally a two-hour drive turned into an eight-hour ordeal just to get to the burning man gates. then brent sent us video saying that he hopes to be back in the bay area sometime tonight . >> we made it through the rain and the mud and we waited until it was safe enough to drive. alicia, from san francisco, said she spent most of the day cleaning off mud. everyone was sort of doing things. >> we saw a graveyard of rvs and cars stuck and we tried to help a few people. some people's tires were completely
1:54 am
covered with mud so they had no traction. >> we saw some cars stuck in the mud and maybe a van that looked like it had caught fire. so we hope folks are okay and able to come back to collect their items. >> reporter: speaking of coming back, will they? the ones i talked to today, told me yes. pictures like this seem to erase the rainstorm before the rainbow. >> a guy who lives near the campsite said the burners did not leave all that much trash behind. what would you do if somebody handed you $5000 and walked away? for one bay area thrift shop , it became a true story of giving.
1:55 am
>> reporter: the day started like any other at pick of the litter in burlingame. the thrift shop manager began ringing up sales and collecting bags of donated clothes when things start happening. >> money sort of flew out of the shirt and we both went, oh no! >> it kept falling and kept falling and i said oh, this is actually a decent amount of money right here. >> reporter: it wasn't just a few dollars. try $5000 in cash. with the help of coworkers they contacted the woman who regularly donates items to the store. she asked us not to identify her for her safety and fear of being targeted. >> she came back and i gave her
1:56 am
$5000 and said thank you for supporting us. >> he could have just put the money in his pocket and that was the end of the day and nobody would have known, but he didn't. >> reporter: in the short time he became the face of the store. this nonprofit finds homes for thousands of animals, many of whom come to them sick or injured. regular customers have become friends. >> i wasn't surprised that he found it and gave it back. that did not surprise me at all. the whole staff is great and all of her is just special. >> reporter: that sense of kindness abounds at pick of the litter. this means that animals
1:57 am
looking for homes are winning, too. >> whatever you do in the world comes back to you 10 times. >> we are grateful for all the clothes and donations that we get. it is a win win. >> reporter: sommer and ozzie know, too, that they have a forever friend who is looking out for those around him. >> the peninsula humane society finds homes for thousands of animals who come to them sick and injured. noble cause. plus i have a soft spot for a black and brown dog! >> you have rescue dogs, right? >> yes, we have two rescues. it is very rewarding. the one was rescued when she was 12 weeks old so now she has grown to be a senior. the other one we rescued when he was already a senior and he keeps trucking along. >> they treat their dogs like kings! >> we do, we try! we push them around in a stroller. let's take a look at what
1:58 am
the weather looks like for us! it looks pretty good for getting your dogs out for a walk if they are into that. we are looking at the fog spreading out. we have just normal september weather patterns sticking around for the rest of this week. little bit warmer as we head into the weekend but not that far out of the ordinary, and here is the really good thing. air quality will remain good for the foreseeable future. switching perspectives, here is the view from the santa clara valley. san jose looking good for the moment. and the temperature sensor in concord has been malfunctioning. temperature is mostly dropping down into the 60s. we will see the numbers dropping off as we head through the rest of tonight with the fog making a push into the inland valleys. it will be a fairly shallow layer of fog so will not take long for the sun to burn through that. the fog will back away from the coast as we head towards midday. i think you will see a little bit
1:59 am
of sunshine for coastal parts of the bay area. temperatures tonight or in the 50s pretty much across the board with the warmest spots around 60. the winds will pick up but it will not be overly breezy. in the morning, the winds will hardly be noticeable and the strongest guests in the afternoon are in the 10 to 15-mile-per-hour range with slightly stronger gusts closer to the bay and the coast. high temperatures tomorrow run very, very close to what is normal for the sixth of september, a degree or two above normal at four degrees below average in concord, but this time of year we don't complain about that. we have 70s and 80s down the peninsula and the south end of the bay with mid 80s into the santa clara valley. even the warmest spots only get into the mid 80s. temperatures close to 70 in san francisco and a mix of 70s and low 80s for the north bay . eventually you get back
2:00 am
up to around 90 degrees around ukiah. temperatures warm up down the line but it is a modest warm-up for san francisco in oakland. we have upper 70s and even close to 80 degrees to start off next week. temperatures further inland undergo a more noticeable warming trend but nothing out of control. the santa clara valley kind of hovers in the mid 80s and even the hottest spots only get up into the low to may be mid-90s sunday, monday and tuesday. while you see more sunshine along the coast into the weekend and early next week it will not warm-up a whole lot. just consistency personified, staying in the 60s for those coastal parts of the bay area. it is a weird aftereffect of hurricane idalia, how far the storm managed to fling some flamingos. vern? straight ahead in sports, the giants? no. and it was

bay area power couple steph and aisha curry have a deep connection to oakland and they have been giving back to giving students the tools they need to eat healthy and to learn. >> these kids deserve an opportunity to achieve their full potential, especially from the black and brown community. we are trying to do our part in a meaningful way. >> a quality meal and a safe place to play. these are three very simple things in life that every child should have access to. when you are not afforded these things it is like how can i even dream? >> tomorrow on cbs mornings the curries talk about their mission for schools. it is great to hear them doing that. i want to see our kids succeed. >> how many times do you see the name curry and giving back

in the same sentence? i can't count that high? and it is nice to have a giants win! we have been looking for them! can't find it! we have baseball up top. great night for the cubs at the giants' expense, a night where eight runs and 12 hits were not enough! thirsty? all right! well, tied at four in the sixth and we have j.d. davis! this two-run shot put san francisco up 6-4. same score, bottom of the fourth, the cubs' bats went bold. four batters later, the cubs up one. christopher morel swung on and was gone. that blast capped a six-run inning. the cubs won 11-8 and the giants have lost five straight and have fallen into an n.l.
2:06 am
wild-card spot, two games outside looking in. we featured heather hadley earlier in the show. race car driver by trade! and craig bassett was in town with the blue jays. the blue jays won 7-1. it is oakland 's 97th loss for the season. we have americans frances tiafoe ! it is the first time two african-americans have played each other in the u.s. open quarters. third set tiebreak with tiafoe serving , and sheldon blasted the return just inside the line. the 20-year-old won the tiebreak. fourth set, match point, near court and tiafoe had no chance to catch up to it. sheldon won
2:07 am
in four sets and became the youngest american man since 1992 to reach the u.s. open semi's. he will face novak djokovic on friday. sara, i know you love sports, but that could be a david versus goliath matchup. can i tell folks what we were doing during the commercial break? we were talking fantasy football trades! >> i might need a tight end! travis kelce, my man! all right, vern, we appreciate it! having your house fall in a river sounds like one of the scariest things. the couple that lived there was not home but their cat was. just when they thought all was lost, turns out it wasn't. leo just turned up safe and sound 26 days later a little bit thinner but otherwise doing okay. when he was reunited with his family
2:08 am
he celebrated by eating four cans of tuna and killing a mouse! that family should change his name to lucky leo. people around the southeast and the midwest are seeing pink. flamingos are showing up in places like ohio and kentucky. this video was taken in florida , where the birds were enjoying the beach. the flamingo population is actually pretty small normally but it is generally nonexistent in kentucky until now. scientists say that you can blame hurricane idalia. they think the flamingos were traveling in the caribbean when they diverted north around the bad weather. who knows. maybe some of the birds will decide to stay. if you saw this sign you would probably stop and read it. what you do after is up to you, but there is one problem. it isn't real.

past this sign. it has the look of an official city sign, but alas, it was not! the city official posted a photo on social media saying we are aware that someone has installed this cheeky sign. please note that this is not an official chicago parks sign. as a reminder, at least some clothing is required at all beaches . local media reported that there were actually two of these signs. still no word on who stuck it up there. >> which university is closest to that beach? all right, frat boys! who put it there? >> northwestern, university of chicago, couple candidates there. they got the font right! >> the colors are spot on! not that any of us -- quite right. yeah, i don't know. i don't know if people took them up
