former proud boys leader enrique tarrio gets more than two decades in prison. what he said at his hearing as he asked the judge for mercy. september scorcher. how a late summer heat wave is disrupting back to school schedules. and an historic impeachment trial gets under way. texas attorney general and prominent conservative ken paxton accused of corruption. ♪ well, good morning, and goo to be with you i'm anne-marie green. we begin with the former leader of the far right extremist group, the proud boys, receiving the longest prison sentence of any january 6th defendant to date. in a washington, d.c. courtroom yesterday, enrique tarrio, apologized for the events of that day when thousands stormed the u.s. capitol in a failed plot to keep donald trump in power. jarred hill is here in new york with more on all of this. jarred, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. according to our crews in the court, the judge called tarrio's case an outlier. even among the other january 6th

cases, saying that he was at the top of the command structure that led to a violent attack on the capitol and the nation's principles. former proud boys leader, enrique tarrio was slapped with a 22 prison sentence on tuesday after his conviction on seditious conspiracy and other charges in the federal january 6th investigation. tarrio was not in washington that day, but prosecutors argue he was the primary organizer, leading the attack from a hotel in baltimore. a prior arrest banned him from traveling to d.c. >> he was the leader in recruiting and directing the organized violence when the mob attacked the capitol and tried to stop the transfer of power. >> reporter: tarrio's sentence was more lenient than the 33 years prosecutors wanted, but the judge did apply a terrorism enhancement. lawyers for the 39-year-old insisted their client was a, quote, misguided patriot and asked for maximum term of 15

years. >> while we respect the judge's sentence, we respectfully disagree. >> reporter: during his hearing yesterday, tarrio begged the judge to show mercy, saying how sorry he was for the events that occurred january 6th. but the judge highlighted this text message the exproud boys leader sent after crowds breached the capitol, writing, quote, proud of my boys and my country. don't expletive leave. >> we will be filing an appeal in due course. >> reporter: four other proud boys including two top lieutenants of the far right group received lesser sentences, ranging from 10 to 18 years. enrique tarrio is now one of more than 100 defendants to be convicted and sentenced in trial stemming from that capitol riot. anne-marie, back to you. >> jarred hill in new york, thank you. >> sure. now, to the late-season scorcher. millions of people in the east and south are under heat advisories as temperatures soar into the 90s. omar villafranca shows us how

hot the weather is -- how rather the hot weather is throwing a wrench in some school schedules. >> reporter: extreme heat is causing a back to school meltdown. in detroit, these two had to pick up their sons three hours early after the mercury hit 91 degrees. >> i just found out yesterday at 7:00 p.m., yesterday, that they have half a day today. >> reporter: it's not just in michigan. schools across seven states either had early dismissals or were closed entirely because of the heat. including in philadelphia, where students from 78 public schools with no air-conditioning were sent home early on the first day of classes. in washington, d.c., the swamp feeling like a swamp. public pools were set to close on labor day, but the 97 degree temps are forcing city officials to keep some open until september 21st. it's welcome relief for steve. >> it's pretty warm here, but couldn't be a better place than at the pool.

>> reporter: businesses in texas are also feeling the effects. including this ivy tavern in dallas. the local bar has plenty of patio space with fans and water misters. but general manager says when it's triple digits outside, customers stay home. >> if we get a cold front goes down to the 90s, we get a jump in business real fast. >> reporter: you notice that quick? >> literally one day to the next. absolutely. >> reporter: texas power grid operator issued a weather advisory for the rest of the week and are asking customers to conserve power to avoid any outages especially on friday when temperatures could reach 107 degrees. omar villa franco, cbs news, plano, texas. authorities in pennsylvania have expanded the search area for convicted murder who escaped from prison last week. he was spotted again on camera monday. as nikki dementri reports -- the images offer new information about the escapee. >> reporter: these are the

latest images of escaped killer danelo cavalcante captured by a trail camera overnight. outside the search zone where police thought they had him trapped. >> the photos confirm that cavalcante has not changed his appearance, but also that he has obtained a backpack, a duffel sling-type pack and a hooded sweatshirt. >> reporter: police were forced to widen their search perimeter which led to two school districts closing out of an abundance of caution. >> everyone is home today. but still it's not what we chose to be. >> reporter: cavalcante is believed to be within ten miles from the prison where he escaped last week. the police almost had him this weekend. he was spotted by a state trooper who gave chase but ultimately lost him in the woods. >> we had already requested and begun to mobilize resources from additional federal agencies last evening to include the fbi and u.s. customs and border patrol. >> reporter: cavalcante is serving a life sentence without parole for killing his ex-girlfriend in front of her two small children.

he is the second prisoner to escape from this prison this year. cavalcante has been spotted multiple times since he escaped last thursday. police believe he hides during the day and moves around at night. this rattled community just wants this to be over. >> that's the fear is time goes on he gets more and more desperate so you never know what he's going to do. >> reporter: investigators are utilizing everything from night goggles to drones to helicopter and drones in this manhunt. nikki dementri, cbs news. the historic impeachment trial of texas attorney general ken paxton resumes today. opening statements were given yesterday. the embattled republican pleading not guilty to accusations of bribery and corruption. his fate is in the hands of the gop dominated state senate. in may, the house voted overwhelmingly to impeach him if the senate ousts him, paxton could be barred from ever holding elected office in texas. the 60-year-old donald trump ally calls the impeachment trial a politically motivated sham and says that he expects to be acquitted. senator mitch mcconnell is

united airlines says it's investigating the cause of a computer glitch that forced it to temporarily ground its entire fleet across the u.s. and canada yesterday. the result, more than 350 flights were disrupted. errol barnett has more. >> reporter: it began with an ominous statement. united airlines experiencing a system-wide technology issue. the faa advising the airline was unable to contact their dispatch through normal means. the impact, a nationwide ground stop, halting all of the airline's departures in north america. the alert was issued at roughly 1:00 p.m. eastern time. just over an hour later, united lifted the ground stop saying it was caused by a software update. but even small problems can create massive headaches. the ground stop has translated to hundreds of delays, slowing thousands of people, especially at united's major hubs. those still on the tarmac were stuck. one passenger posted, quote, been sitting in a hot plane at
