from cbs news bay area, this is the afternoon edition. the fight against fentanyl is becoming more widespread. new overdoses reported, in one bay area suburb. a traffic alert in solano county, the tanker spill that has had a section of freeway blocked for hours. fans said pay the man, so the niners just did. the record deal that nick bosa just signed, days before the start o the season. good afternoon, i am elizabeth.. we hear a lot abou fentanyl overdoses in cities like san francisco, but, we jus

got some new numbers today that show the problem is everywhere. including in our bay area suburbs. police in union city say they responded to five overdoses in a 24 hour period, since yesterday. two of them were fatal. one of the victims, just 17 years old. some others were revived using narcan. the union city police department says it has been seeing a trend in the city and that it is instigating these cases. the problem also extends to the peninsula. today we are hearin from this a san mateo county mo who lost her teenage son to fentanyl. she tells our joslyn moran, youth and adults alike need to be a part of this conversation. >> this is one of collins's las school pictures , when he was 16. >> reporter: liz walker lost he son to an accidental fentanyl overdose in august of 2021. he had just started his senior year at claremont high school, in belmont. >> and then, this is what we sent out to everyone, after, an

i just think, that smile is what so many people remember . the kid just came out smiling, and , except for the last year and one half of his life. >> reporter: liz says the pandemic took a toll on him. he was dealing with anxiety, and h was depressed. liz and her husband only knew he had been smoking weed. they did not thin he had been experiment with other drugs. >> he became addicted, and on august 29th, 2021, we found him -- my husband found him, facedown in his room, and he ha taken a small amount of cocaine, that was largely fentanyl , and he was gone. >> reporter: now, liz is workin to spread as much awareness as you can so that no one else has to go through the pain she felt she also want people to understand the dangers out there. >> i hope that by spreading awareness, more people will

understand it is not worth the risk. and, they are not getting what they are being sold. >> reporter: high schools in sa mateo county now have narcan o hand and some staff have been trained on its use. >> a full on training course, that the nurses and coaches and all those who would be at the front line of maybe having to use it are trained. >> reporter: anson mcgee is the san mateo county superintendent of schools. she says they are also spreading information to parents and student leaders are participating in conversations. this is a part, but liz walker says mental health needs to be talked about, to. >> the mental health crisis has not gone away. and, kids that are feeling that kind of pain and desperation, are more likel to turn to illicit substances, which are very easy to get on snapchat, for instagram, or

whatever social media. >> reporter: she is sherron collins 's story to help others but she also wants people to remember him for his kind heart expect he was funny. and he was so loved. you know? i hope that his short life did have an impact, in a way that we will never fully know. >> reporter: because, now other are hearing his story and can make decisions that could save their lives. this just in, san francisc is set to receive a federal grant of more than $2 million per year over five years to boost its overdose prevention efforts. california's department of public health is launching the first phase of its opioid prevention education campaign. they will see ads on social media, tv, billboards, and bus stops next week. >> the fentanyl is included in

just about every kind of drug, you would not be able to see it smell it, or taste it. know the dangers. the state says the 2022 preliminary report reflects nearly 7000 opioid -related overdoses. more than 6000 of those involved fentanyl. alamed county officials are trying to take down a vaping and syntheti cannabis company. da pamela price announced a lawsuit against apollo future technology, today. the lawsuit alleges the company is illegall selling flavored vape products to kids, and also manufacturing illegal synthetic cannabis project product added livermor warehouse. da price is seeking to shutdown the company. >> when you have companies lik apollo that disregard not only the health and well-being of ou children, but also, the laws that are intended to protect th children, then, small business owners cannot compete with that it competes creates an unfair business climate and undermine the integrity of the community.

>> the das office obtained a temporary restraining order las friday, which bars apollo from selling flavored tobacco products or synthetic cannabis product. before a preliminary injunction hearing later this month . we reached out to apoll future technology for comment and are still waiting to hear back. the month of august will now be acknowledged as transgender history month in california. the state assembly passed the measure co-authored by assembly member matt haney who represents the transgender population in the tenderloin. i does not need a senate approval and will be enacted next year. this makes california the first state to recognize transgender history month. >> this body has been on the forefront of protecting our transgender residents, and this will be another important historic step that we take, as a body, and as a state. >> san francisco became the first city to recognize trans-history month, in 2021. in the meantime, near

sacramento, the rockland school district is considering a polic to notify parents if their chil wants to identify as trans or gender nonconforming . but, a judge put a temporary halt on a similar policy passed by the chino valley school district. state attorney general rob bonta is suing over that policy. a spill has shut down i-80 in venetia.'s chp says a tanke spilled hot asphalt around 9:30 this morning. cruiser tried to clean it up with shovels and by placing dirt on it. no word on the condition of the driver or what caused the crash. 49ers fans can finally exhale . the team just announce a new deal with pass rusher nic bosa. and markovic has the details in the red and gold report. a big paycheck is coming. >> after holding out for seven

weeks, nick bosa and the 49ers have agreed to a new contract that would nick bosa the highest-paid defensive player i nfl history. the news broke right before kyle shanahan's press conference, this afternoon. >> we all knew that nick would be rewarded like he did, i don't know the details but we knew it would be like that eventually. the organization did and i think that nick did, and probably got it worked out on everyone's side. >> it worked out very well. bosa's new deal is reportedly worth up to $170 million, with 122 million guaranteed. bosa is expected to join the team as soon as today , and all signs point to him playing sunday, in pittsburgh. >> any question at this point whether he will be in uniform o sunday? >> there is question, because w haven't seen him, but i think you guys know how i'm talking, he would have to have a beer belly and be out of shape or something. that is not in his dna.

chase center steakhouse, the cafes will be called miller and lucks provisions. the stockton side of the plaza will offer an eatery that features savory and all-day brunch options. the space has been vacant since 2020. the powell street side will feature european-style pastries, and he will add 140 seats in the courtyard for waiters to take orders from customers. he hopes it will also turn into a major event an theater space. >> i think, we will do thousand of covers per day. >> reporter: it is a project that he hopes will breathe new life into union square and counter the doom loop associate with downtown san francisco. >> people need to look in the mirror every day. with crime and vandalism, theft and robbery, the other side of the coin is positivity in the city. >> reporter: maryland inbreed

contacted the woman, who regularly donate items to the store. she correctly answered all their questions. she asked us not to identify her, for her safety, in fear of being targeted. >> i said, come on down, i have something for you. she came bac and i gave her $5000 in a paper bag and said, thank you for supporting us. >> he could have just put the money in his pocket and that was the end of the day, and nobody would have known. but, h didn't. >> thank you, do you guys need receipt? >> reporter: in a short time, oliver has become the familiar friendly face of the store. all profits go to the peninsula humane society, a nonprofit finds homes for thousands of animals, many who come to them sick or injured. all -- oliver rescued his furry loved ones . regular customers have become friends. >> i was not surprised that he found it and gave it back, that did not surprise me at all. we love oliver. the whole staff is

great, but oliver is just special. >> good to see you, marshall. thanks. >> reporter: that spirit of kindness abounds at pick of the litter. sales and revenue are strong , and that makes animals looking for homes winning two. >> whatever you do in the world comes back to you 10 times, be it negativity or positivity, it comes back. >> we are grateful for all the clothes and donations we have. so, it was a win-win. >> reporter: summer and all the no, too, that they have a forever friend looking out for those around him. >> he is paying it forward, tha is for sure. the peninsula humane society's hope program finds homes for thousands of animals who come to them sick and injured. it also takes care of injured and orphaned native wildlife , from san francisco through san mateo county, and the northern half of santa clara county. that was an inspiring story

. san jose got a 109, that is the hottest san jose has ever been on record for that was one year ago, today. keep that in mind when we take a look at the warm-up coming our way. let's d this for concord, we will bring in concord 70 forecast, numbers will climb up to the lower and middle 90s, so, the numbers are going out , into sunday and monday we have a couple of days here where you do go to the low 90s, that is about 4 to 5 degrees above average by this time of year. these are daytime highs for tomorrow. is is thursday, we are still just doing mid 80s but tomorrow will look and feel a lot like today. fremont goes to 76, the reason we will warm up a bit is becaus we are going to lose out on thi battle playing out in the atmosphere. if we look at this, globally, there is a heat wave across the midsection of the country. looking at the big picture, look at the pool of cold air in the gulf of alaska spilling out and heading our wa , and sitting off the coast, an then those just kind of go back and forth. look at the dates

there, that is actually next saturday, september 16th. so, we will go back and forth with bit of a warm-up, a bit of a cooldown to average. the big pool of warm air over in the midsection of the country is going to win out in that battle , for a few days, as we get towards the weekend. it will likely not last very long here. tomorrow, the marine layer builds back in. clear skies to start the day, more sunshine than anything else, it will feel similar to today. that is the seven day forecast. northba valleys, san jose, you will warm-up into the east bay for low and mid-90s for sunday and monday as we saw, and then, the big pool of cool air coming over the gulf of alaska starts to win the battle for a little while. that is the way you transition into fall. ups and downs and that is what we will be doing for the next several
