my daughter said that jack has been poisoned. >> now 11:00, a bay area families close call with a chip so spicy it might be to blame for 18's death. he is the last of his kind, or is he? and he dropped out of school to follow his dreams. the bold idea doing big business in san jose. >> from kpix, this is the late news with sara donchey on cbs news bay area.
1:39 am
hello, i am sara donchey. some people love to eat spicy foods to see if they can handle it, but at what point is this dangerous? the viral one chip challenge there's people to eat a tortilla chip that is the spiciest in the world. it comes in a coffin -shaped package and advises people to wait for as long as they can before drinking anything to relieve the burn and then post reactions online. videos show people coughing, gagging, struggling for water. but pacqui, the company who makes the chip, pulled the product from shelves after a young boy died after eating the chip. he fainted and a few hours later passed out. he was rushed to the emergency room where he died. the family said before
1:40 am
that he played basketball and was not allergic to anything. we still don't know the official cause of death but the parents want this challenge to be banned. >> no pre-existing condition. not to my knowledge. there were sleepless nights, especially when i look at him. >>the company put a statement the challenge is intended for adults only but they have seen a growing number of teens not listening to the warnings, so they are pulling the chips from store shelves. and one day before the teen died a bay area sixth-grader attempted the challenge and almost ended up in the hospital. his dad told our andrea nakano about the close call. >> reporter: this is the chip that is creating all the craze, one chip in a coffin -shaped

box. john did not initially know that his son had taken the challenge and got a call saying that his son was poisoned at school. >> all these things are going through my head. who poisoned him? who could have given him something like that? >> reporter: the panic subsided when he got to school and realized what had really happened. >> the administrator said he had participated in the one-chip challenge. and i was like, you have got to be kidding me. is that what this is? >> reporter: his son jack said that after eating the chip he started breathing heavily and then the vomiting began. >> when i ate the chip it was really spicy and all, so once it was gone i felt fine, then i was sick and i was in the office. when my stomach started hurting my hands were, like, stuck in this position and i couldn't move them. i could barely open them up. they felt like they weren't even my

hands. >> reporter: they are thankful that it wasn't worse, especially hearing about the death of the teen in massachusetts that is possibly linked to the one chip challenge. >> so i would just like to spread awareness to other parents who see this stuff or see kids talking about it or see the tiktok stuff and make them aware that it is not for kids. >> reporter: asked for jack, there is no way he is ever doing the challenge again. >> lesson learned. i don't need to say anything. you know, what he described happened to him point, i don't think he ever wants to do that again. >> this has been happening in california a lot. three high school students in lodi got sick from this, so the school band the chips. poison control has an entire page asking people to seek help.

a bomb threat that shut down an elementary school is top of mind for parents, still. oakland police confirmed that the threats came from outside of california, so now the fbi is looking into this. the school got the threats and racist emails last week so they had to evacuate the campus. the school recently got backlash online for hosting a gathering for students of color. tonight we are getting our first look at what happened when san francisco police shot a man armed with what they called a rambo-style knife. this happened in the tenderloin after someone called 911. >> i got a guy with a knife out here hurting people! big knife! i tried to pepper spray him. he is on the sidewalk. >> police showed up to jones
1:44 am
street and body camera video shows them asking the man to drop the knife for several minutes. at one point the man walked into the street with the knife. officers said he moved towards them and that is when they shot him with nonlethal rounds and bullets. >> red light! >> police said the 54-year-old richard everett was hurt and is in police custody now. we don't know exactly how many times he was hit or whether the rubber and real bullets were fired simultaneously, but you heard a lot of rounds going off there. as for whether the officers did anything wrong with this, chief scott says the department has not figured that out yet. sfpd has been working to dig itself out of a staffing shortage. the department has about 600 vacant positions and tonight there is talk of stepping up a supplemental security force that has

patrolled san francisco since the gold rush, but not a lot of people know about it. our itay hod walked the beat with the last number of the patrol. >> reporter: it is a little before dust and alan byard is on the look for anything suspicious. >> i have caught probably six burglars in the last three years. two of them have had firearms on them. >> reporter: for more than 47 years he has been patrolling his beat and driving his unmarked car through the arena district and pacific heights. >> we have an increased homeless population and about 70% of them have drug and mental health problems. >> reporter: but even though he
1:46 am
looks like a police officer, he is not. he is part of patrol special, a group of san francisco crime fighters that have been around since the gold rush. an ancillary force overseen by sfpd, they have uniforms, badges and even guns. their powers, however, are limited. members can arrest suspects but they can't apprehend them. but i guess the biggest difference between them and regular police officers is who pays their salary. >> we get paid by the citizens and residents and businesses in our particular area to provide additional police services to them. >> reporter: allen charges anywhere from $65 per month for residences to a few hundred dollars for businesses. tonight he gets a call from one of his paying clients worried about a homeless man who seems to be unstable yelling on a stoop and refusing to leave. allen arrives before the police and within a few minutes diffuses
1:47 am
the situation. >> you can't be down here. >> okay. >> reporter: at one point the city had more than 450 patrol specials but the program has been phased out after police officers began off-duty patrols to make extra cash. alan is the last patrol specialist left in the city, and at 68 he is hoping to retire. but with spiking crime and severe police staffing shortages, there have been discussions among city officials to bring back the program. aaron peskin is the president of the san francisco board of supervisors and he says the patrols are a win-win for the city and sfpd. >> it is like having a security guard was also a law enforcement officer and will do anything to give you peace of mind. >> reporter: not everyone thinks the program should be revived. ken lombard is part of
1:48 am
the san francisco officers training program. he says that not everyone can afford them. >> i think it is better to have more police officers and deputy sheriffs on the streets making the arrest and putting the criminals in jail. >> reporter: allen believes that doing away with patrol specials is a mistake. he is hoping for a renewal of the program while wearing his nearly half-century of service as a badge of honor. >> there is some news to report on the staffing front. the department says the latest class of recruits was the biggest since 2020 and that applications are at a five-year high. what a long, strange trip it has been from the hippies in the hate frame to suits? and if you think giving up

pandemic hit. >> so then i didn't have to pay rent in the street at that time so i was saving my money and word started spreading. i had big lines. people started coming. >> reporter: a little luck and big ideas seem to be daniel's formula, and so far it is working, but his plans, like his tacos, are supersized. at 34 years old, he says he is really just beginning. >> daniel's father jose luis ortega passed away in 2019. he did get to see the start of his son's business but did not get to see the success that it is today. i can see why. have not tried it but i definitely would! >> especially right now! the sun is been down for about four hours! >> we fight those demons here every night, don't we? and we lose! just in and out and the fast food place after work --

>> it is just like, goodbye! >> i say hello! >> i try to say goodbye and then i fail. let's take a look at the big picture pattern. we are between the large-scale features. the heat dome is far enough away that it is not directly influencing our weather. any ripples in the atmosphere would give us a very early-season chance of showers . we are kind of in between. the heat dome will build a little bit closer as we head into the weekend but we are talking a modest warm-up in store by sunday and monday with temperatures returning to near average or below by the middle of next week. we will see a little bump in the pollen count over the next few days by saturday and sunday into early next week, back into the medium to high category as we approach our secondary peak. looking outside right now, kind of clear skies for the most part from this perspective but there is plenty of fog that has been rolling in in waves. temperatures are a mix of 50s
1:58 am
and 60s but comfortable out there tonight. the fog will be widespread to start the day but a shallow layer, meaning the sun will burn right through that for the inland valleys. it will take a little bit longer for the fog to back up the coast. along the coast you will see more sunshine tomorrow than you saw today. you did not see much at all today. the temperature in pacifica only got 59 degrees. with the additional sunshine tomorrow you should warm up to a greater extent. lows are in the 50s across the board for everybody. comfortable to start off friday morning. the highs are almost exactly normal by friday afternoon. 60s and 70s around the bay. mid-60s along the coast and that assumes a couple hours of sunshine. a mix of 70s and 80s down at the south end of the bay and the peninsula with mid to low 80s for the santa clara valley. right around 90 for the hottest spots east of the diablo range but otherwise we are talking mid-to-upper 80s and 60s and
1:59 am
70s with low 80s in the north bay valleys until you get further north where you find temperatures climbing a little bit closer to 90 degrees. if you are heading down to monterey for the indycar races, temperatures are going to be in the low 70s both saturday and again on sunday. enjoy the perfect mid-september weather. temperatures will warm up a little bit but it is a modest warm-up. sunday and monday are the warmest days , little further into the 70s for san francisco in oakland. you can definitely handle that. inland spots? well, warmer that we will not call it hot. mid 80s and san jose. closer to 90s for much of the north bay and into the 90s for the delta and the tri-valley but some of the hottest spots in the mid-90s? again, in mid-september things could be a lot worse. like everyone spell we have had so far this summer, sara, it will not last long. we are back to below normal temperatures next week. >> you of use the word normal this summer than i have ever heard you you! >> this is my fourth summer here and it has been the call

commitments. i will also be unavailable every saturday. >> yeah, okay. dan informed kelly that the schedule would be in effect until february or march. her response? sorry. we are short staffed. yeah, don't try that one at home, betty. >> it's great! mondays are covered, thursday, saturday . at one point they played on tuesday and wednesday during the season. >> yeah, he is going to need to get it together! >> for 22 weeks we are guaranteed to have a football game to watch. the nfl is back. the chiefs and lines kicking things off on thursday with the rest of the league awaiting sunday and monday. the chiefs raised their super bowl lvii banner and they are favored to do it again this season. kansas city leading 14-7 early. the homes to flex right to brian branch and returns it for a pick six, tying the game at 14. seven minutes left and now marin county native leads
