during a late summer heat wave, and breaking overnight the hurricane in the atlantic strengthens to a category five. cave rescue. a sick american is trapped thousands of feet deep in a cave in turkey. the complicated mission to get him out. and match interrupted. protesters cause a delay at the u.s. open semifinals. the reaction from tennis fans. [ chants ] >> kick them out. good morning, and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. we begin with the seemingly endless summer scorcher. millions of americans are still under excessive heat warnings today especially in the southwest where triple-digit temperatures are expected through the weekend. jarred hill is here in new york where millions of students are coping with the extreme weather as they head back to school. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, you know, focusing in class can be hard enough when it's comfortable inside.

fortunately much of the country is starting to cool down, but this cruel summer has already taken its toll. students in the nation's largest school district, new york city, braved the sweltering september sun on the first day back. >> it's really hot. >> reporter: same in boston where like new york officials have spent millions adding air conditioners to most schools. >> inside the majority of our schools it is very cool and comfortable. >> reporter: but in several states, schools without adequate ac canceled class or sent students home early to beat the heat. >> i'm happy with the decision. i thought it was way too hot. >> we all went to school when we were younger, whether it was snow, heat, we all survived. >> reporter: in tarrant county, texas, the heat has been blamed for at least 14 deaths in the past two months. meals on wheels is delivering food and ac units to seniors. >> a lot of these are also heaters. come the winter months they'll be taken care of, as well.

>> the dog days of summer are not just barking, they're biting. >> reporter: the united nations says this summer has been the hottest on record, and experts say next year could be worse. >> as long as countries continue to emit greenhouse gases into ththe atmosphehere, we're e goi contntinue to heheat up. > reporter:r: the warmiming in t the atlantic ocean are givg more strength to hurricane lee now churning hundreds of miles away from the east coast. and last night hurricane lee became the first category-five storm of the season with winds up to 160 miles per hour. forecasters have said we are more than a week away from any possible direct impact to the u.s. but the east coast can expect dangerous surf as well as rip currents starting this sunday. >> all right. you got to feel for the people in the caribbean who are watching that storm. jarred hill in new york. thank you. >> of course. a former top aide to donald trump is now facing prison time after being convicted of contempt of congress. peter navarro was found guilty yesterday for refusing to cooperate with an investigation into the attack on the u.s.

he could spend up to a year in prison. the 74-year-old vowed to appeal, arguing that he was protected by executive privilege. a sentencing hearing is scheduled for january. president biden is on his way to india for a meeting with world leaders at the g20 summit. the president left the white house last night bound for new delhi where he'll make a pitch to allies that the u.s. is a more trustworthy economic partner than china. the trip, which includes a stop in vietnam, comes amid rising tensions between beijing and washington over an important trade route. china's president won't attend -- won't be attending the summit, but he is sending his second in command instead. and a complicated rescue operation is under way in turkey for an american researcher trapped in a cave thousands of feet below ground. as ramy inocencio reports, the researcher has been unable to get out on his own after becoming ill.

>> reporter: more than 3,000 feet below ground, rescuers from across europe have reached american mark dickey. >> i'm alert. i'm talking. but i'm not healed on the inside yet. so i need help to get out of here. >> reporter: the 40-year-old expert caver suddenly fell ill a week ago while mapping out a cave system in southern turkey. suffering life-threatening gastrointestinal bleeding and vomiting. unable to climb out, over 150 rescuers rushed in bringing medical supplies including blood and fluids and organizing a plan to bring him to the surface. >> we take care of our own, and it's really special to be taken care of. >> reporter: dickey and his rescuers are appropriately at a place called camp hope. from there, the return path up zig zags through the earth's crust, a stretch more than two times the height of new york's empire state building, with narrow passages that need widening for a stretcher to get through.

carl heitmeyer is a friend and fellow cave rescuer in new jersey. walk us through what he and his rescuers will have to pass through. >> they're going to have tight spots. they're going to have restrictions. they're going to be belly crawls. it's cold. the water is 40 degrees fahrenheit. you're going to get wet. >> reporter: he says best case scenario is a minimum of four days until dickey reaches the surface. worst case scenario, a week if not two. ramy inocencio, cbs news, london. in los angeles, actor danny masterson was sentenced to 39 -- 30 years to life in prison for drugging and raping two women 20 years ago. the victims were in court where they had a powerful message for masterson. carter evans reports. they got their justice. a long time coming. >> reporter: it took two decades for danny masterson to be found guilty of rape. the actor best known for his role in "that '70s show" had been convicted in may of raping two women in 2003. a jury deadlocked on a third count.

masterson and both victims were members of the church of scientology. there were allegations the reason it took so long was that the church prevented the victims from reporting the assaults. the women claimed once they came forward they were harassed and threatened by the church. >> just because it's a delayed reporting, even if it's been 20 years, it still matters. a crime still happened. and somebody needs to be held accountable. >> reporter: his victims testified just prior to the sentencing calling masterson a true coward and heartless monster, you relish in hurting women, it's your addiction. another saying every time i think i'm okay, that rape comes back to me. >> i've gotten to know the victims in this case. they're strong. they were committed to making sure that justice gets served. and today they got it. >> reporter: the church of scientology denies allegations that it harassed the victims or prevented them from reporting the assaults. masterson's attorneys plan to appeal the verdict. for now he's not eligible for parole until he's 77 years old.

21-year-old daniel khalife appears to have slipped away from a london prison wednesday while working in a kitchen and hiding under a food delivery van. he had been awaiting trial on terror charges. khalife, who was discharged from the british military in may, is accused of gathering intel and planting fake bombs at a military base. police say his military experience may make him harder to catch. the "daily beast" reports on a new lawsuit that blames a brooklyn man's death on his peloton bike. the litigation claims 32-year-old ryan furtado was killed last year when his high-end stationary bike toppled over and hit him on his neck and face cutting open a major blood vessel that provides a blood supply to the brain. in a statement peloton said "we offer our deepest sympathy and condolences to the family for this unfortunate accident. the health and safety of our member community is a top priority." and "the new york times"

walmart is cutting pay for some of its workers, and gatorade is launching a new water. shanelle kaul has those stories and more in your cbs "money watch" report. >> reporter: stocks finished mixed thursday as investors mull over the prospects of higher interest rates sticking around. the dow gained 57 points. the nasdaq was down 123, and the s&p 500 finished 14 points lower. some walmart employees are making less than they would have three months ago. the "wall street journal" reports the country's largest private employer began restructururing its hohourly wa this s summer. most new hires will now earn the lowest possible hourly wage for the store. before some jobs had a higher starting wage than others. economists say the cuts are responding to a cooling labor market. a fourth top ftx executive has pled guilty to criminal charges in the fraud case against founder sam bankman-fried. ryan saleme could be sentenced
