from cbs news bay area , this is the afternoon edition. the motion carries. >> it is official. tuition is going up for tens of thousands of college students in california. we will break on the price hikes and the timeline. yelling and finger-pointing at a school board meeting. the topic that led to everyone being thrown out. the future of ai is up for debate on capitol hill. new technologies are taking center stage a dream force. think you for joining us this afternoon. i'm elizabeth cook. tuition is going up for students in california's csu system. the board of trustees voted this afternoon and anne makovec has more on what this means for students.

>> it is not good. the csu system is facing a deficit of $1.5 billion. even trustees who have been against tuition increases in the past voted for at this time saying otherwise, all students will suffer from drastic cuts. the increase is 6% every year for five years in a row. what does that mean to students? i the 2028-2029 school year, tuition will be nearly $2000 more. we caught up with students in san jose and san francisco who were not happy. >> compared to what people were paying in the late 1900s, it is really unfair.'s back the reason why sf state is it was affordable. hearing about this , do i want to do my graduate program here? >> things got heated during public comments with the students trying to stop the increases but trustees fired back saying this is what needs to be done to avoid kicking the can down the road . hanging

over all of this, federal student loan repayments resume october 1. they have been on pause since the pandemic started in march 2020. loan debt interest already began accruing this month. we also heard today from disgruntled faculty members from two different unions now at a bargaining impasse with the csu system so that will be the next controversy the board will have to address. hazmat crews are investigating an overturned tanker truck in sunol. the truck overturned just before 1:00 this afternoon at geary and calaveras road . you can see it happen in a curvy part of the road. officials say that is making it hard for prior crews to get to the truck. teachers and the sausalito marin city school district have voted to authorize a strike . they say they have been working without a contract for the past two years. the union says they want a 16% raise over two years including this school year. the district superintendent has said they are offering an 8%

increase over the same timeframe. >> the district continues to not really change our position. we entered into impasse in june 2023 and during the impasse process, we went to mediation. mediation failed and now we are at the fact-finding process. >> no word on when a possible strike will happen. pride flags have officially been banned at some schools and alameda county. the sunol school board passed a resolution last night during a meeting that got so heated, the entire audience had to be thrown out. >> you are out of line! >> this went on as the board president called for order for three full minutes. >> okay. i am going to ask everyone to leave the board to continue without anyone in here. >> in all, more than 100 people

were thrown out. this all started in june during pride month when a rainbow flag flew on the main flagpole as -- at sunol elementary. a ban was proposed on all special-interest flags saying the district should not be seen as endorsing one view over another. parents were divided. >> leave the kids alone. let the kids learn. let the kids be educated without any politics. i don't spread my lifestyle around that i am a heterosexual. you know? let people live. >> we really need to show the support that sunol glenn is inclusive and make that statement so we can make sure that no longer will we see these conservative leaning policies. >> in the end, the board voted 2-1 in favor of the resolution, allowing only that u.s. and state flags to be flown at the schools. 38% of workers are worried

ai will make at least part, if not their whole job obsolete. that is according to a new study from the american psychological association. the topic of artificial intelligence is the centerpiece of the dream force conference in san francisco. shawn chitnis talked to people who traveled here to learn all about ai. troop by now, it is clear that the focus is ai for this conference. we are aware of some of the data that salesforce had going into this conference. they surveyed hundreds of leaders who said that they are prioritizing ai in the next year. many of them say it is a top priority. we had a chance to talk to someone who traveled far to be here and have him explain why ai is so important to his business. >> everywhere you look around dream force this year, you can't miss that theme, ai.

>> we are here to learn about ai being a hot topic. everyone wants to know what kind of business applications can you use ai for. >> reporter: kyle my is the chief innovation officer in new york and he is returning to dreamforce eager to see what more his company can do with this technology. dreamforce was promoted as a conference bringing in dozens of the top minds on ai. >> our speakers are ethics efforts and they are talking about how we need to be regulating, how we need to think about access to ai and trusting ai. >> reporter: as a financial institution focused on lawyers, esquire bank uses ai to create and send content to their customers including marketing information about loans customers could use to grow their businesses. >> they articulating how important trust is, building that trust layer. ai has new

functionality. >> reporter: while much of the conversation this week will be on trust, kyle is hopeful about the possibilities and is excited to expand how his company uses this technology. >> ai is there to make people's lives easier and do things much more smarter and effective. >> reporter: another way to appreciate why ai is so important to this conference, salesforce had a survey this year that asked thousands of workers about the topic. more than half said they believe generative ai will help them advance their career but around 62% said that they still don't have the skills to effectively and safely use the technology. back to you. governor gavin newsom is speaking right now i dreamforce about the future of tech in california. some of the biggest names in ai, tech, and ethics are meeting with lawmakers on capitol hill today to discuss how to move ahead with ai and the role of congress in

regulating it. while they all agree that congress does need to put some kind of guard rails in place, they also acknowledge that it will be hard to draft legislation on it since the technology is advancing so quickly. >> it is really important . >> you want to be able to maximize the benefits and minimize the harm and that would be our difficult job. >> reporter: the european union was the first to create artificial intelligence regulations when it past the ai act in june. mixed news for your wallet. inflation is up again but some prices at the grocery store are actually down. haley ott takes us inside the numbers. >> reporter: gas prices surged in august and continue to climb upward. aaa says the national average for a gallon of regular unleaded is up $0.14 last year. >> originally i was going to put 20 in and then i saw that and i only put 10 in. >> reporter: gas and oil prices

were a big reason why overall implosion -- inflation rose. when you strip away energy costs, the latest report shows prices for many items we buy are even, what is measured as core inflation. >> the core rate has come down. we saw it go down from 4.7% annually to 4.3% annually so that has been a good improvement. >> one place americans are seeing improvement is at the grocery store. prices are rising at just 3% and some items are dropping. milk is down 3.5% from a year ago. bacon has dropped more than 6% and eggs have plummeted 18%. since march of last year, the federal reserve has been raising interest rates to bring inflation down. the board meets again next weekend is expected to hit the pause button. >> it is unlikely that the fed will raise interest rates next week. the reason being that

they are seeing inflation come down at the core level and they probably can wait until the following meeting to determine whether or not to raise rates again. >> while the federal reserve's benchmark rate is at a 22 year high, experts believe inflation will drop in the coming months with the fed's goal of getting the rate down to just 2%. now to answer the update i have been following for months. a group of california lawmakers is asking the department of justice to help find missing indigenous people. the doj already has a missing were murdered indigenous women and people regional outreach program. it is currently working 10 states but not here in california. this, despite california having the largest population of native american people in the country and the fifth most missing indigenous people cases. the letter to the doj was signed by former house speaker nancy pelosi, us senator alex padilla and five other bay area representatives. earlier this year, we did a

california could be taking a page out of amsterdam's cannabis book. a bill to legalize marijuana caf÷s is headed to the governor's desk after clearing the state legislature. assembly member matt haney introduce the bill to allow amsterdam style caf÷s. that means dispensaries can also serve food, drinks and offer up live entertainment which have been illegal under state law. back in february, he said he hopes it will promote safe consumption and boost tourism. >> we see from places around the world like amsterdam that people will come to a caf÷, smoke cannabis safely and legally with others or consume it however they do, drink coffee and eat a sandwich and that will create thousands of jobs, bring people here from all over the country in the world and be a huge boost to
