from cbs news bay area, this is the afternoon edition. thousands of autoworkers walk off the job in a historic labor strike. we are live with the latest ny president biden believes auto companies should do more. it is a scene we all know too well, rampant snap and grabs across the bay area. now a new lifeline. a deadly stabbing near san jose state university. what investigators are revealing about the attack. good afternoon. i'm elizabeth cook. for the first time in history, the united auto workers union launched a strike against the three big automakers, general motors, ford, and jeep maker stellantis all at the same time. >> we are the union! >> we are the union!

>> thousands of workers walked off the job early this morning across the country. natalie brand is live at the white house where the president sided with the autoworkers. >> reporter: the president has sent administration officials to detroit including active labor secretary julie hsu who was formerly the secretary of california's department of labor and workforce development agency and as you mentioned, he also seemed to side with the autoworkers, saying the automakers need to go further in their negotiations. >> no one wants a strike. >> reporter: president biden, who prides himself on being prounion threw his support behind the auto workers amid its historic strike against the three big automakers. >> auto companies see record profits. those record profits have not been shared fairly

with those workers. >> reporter: workers at three assembly plants in ohio, michigan and missouri took to the picket lines demanding higher wages, a shorter work week and the return of pension. >> it feels good we are out here standing up for what we deserved. >> reporter: the united auto workers union is asking for a 40% pay hike but autoworkers have offered half of that. >> the initial demands were over $100 billion . we still have a ways to go with the offer they put on the table. >> reporter: gm ceo told cbs news the company needs to step up their investment in new technology as vehicles transition from gas to tv. president biden hopes both sides return to the negotiating table and he sent the active secretary and senior advisor to detroit. with each passing day,

economists say the strike could be felt by all americans. >> the best estimates we have seen as far as the cost of this strike could potentially be upwards of $5 billion of total damage in the first 10 days. troop leaders expect to be at the bargaining table saturday and are awaiting a response on their counteroffer. >> this is a targeted strike impacting the plans that union leaders say it could expand. economists also talk about ripple effect send we are already seeing some of that but it would really depend on how long the strike lasts. a senator weighing and saying he stands behind the autoworkers and urges the automakers to negotiate a fair deal that addresses the concerns. >> hopefully they have an agreement soon. it is the largest investment ever to crack down on smash and grab in the bay area and across california. the

state is giving out millions of dollars to cities to help fight organized retail crime. local law enforcement officials talked about how that money could be a game changer. >> we have a whole lot more work to do. currently, the sfpd works with our local and state and federal partners. however, this grant will allow us to do more. we have staffed up in some of our retail areas where these types of thefts have been occurring. we have added dedicated personnel. >> we are able to set a new tone in the state of california that this conduct is completely unacceptable and will not be tolerated. >> san francisco police will receive just over $15 million. san jose and daly city pd will

get about $8 million. san ramon, more than 5 million. palo alto will receive 5.2 million but you know what city did not get a dime? oakland. why? the city and its officials missed the deadline to apply for the money, blaming its economic and workforce development department. now, open businesses are adding even more fed up. >> we are in a very dangerous and precarious time for oakland neighbors and businesses. public safety is far and away the number one issue. to miss something that would bring millions of dollars at a time where we have a budget deficit of over $300 million -- >> it is a humble request to the city of oakland council members, oakland city mayor, please do something. please take a strong action. >> in a statement, the city of oakland says, quote, obviously this outcome is unacceptable. the city and department are reviewing everything that happened to ensure it does not happen again and will take appropriate action. turning now to our weather.

a live look at san francisco as we head into the weekend. some peaks of sunshine with blue skies. let's get more on what we can expect from meteorologist darren peck. >> we are going to use our virtual set to show off the beauty of the bay. we are waiting for cooler air to come out of the gulf of alaska. for today, not necessarily the case. we are looking at today's daytime highs and we will be right on the marks for average. south bay numbers in the low 80s. morgan hill going to 82. livermore in the mid-80s. back in the bay, mid-70s for fremont. 77 in redwood city. half moon bay, we may not get you a lot of sunshine but you should get enough that the numbers will break into the low 60s. in the city, the numbers will stay in the 60s as well. take a look inland. are numbers for contra costa county, those will stay relatively warm. you

will be doing mid-80s. you can see the northbay valley will see temperatures that are also very similar and in line with that. when we get back together, we will take a look at the big picture forecast and i will show you how the marine layer will help us out over the next few days. here is a look at other stories we are following around the bay. san jose police are investigating a deadly stabbing inside a garage near san jose state. authorities say they have a person in custody. the stabbing happened just after 4:00 this morning. police say both the victim and the suspect are not students at the university. the victim's identity has not yet been released and no word on a motive. a bill that will crackdown on speeders is headed to governor newsom's desk the measure will set up a pilot program in six california cities including san francisco, san jose and oakland. the cities will be able to install cameras to catch drivers speeding. offenders will get tickets in the mail. officials

say the cameras will help keep drivers and pedestrians safe. bayview hunters point just got eight new speed bumps to slow traffic and improve safety on gillman avenue where families have been concerned about their kids crossing the street to get to school. it is all part of san francisco's vision zero goal to eliminate all traffic deaths in the city. >> this has been a conversation for years. we have been working with the school and mta and dpw. we have approval by the little ones. this is a milestone. >> the speed bumps are eight of 40 the city plans to build in the bayview district over the next year and a half. japan begins releasing radioactive water into the sea but what are the risks to the ocean's environment?

majority of americans are worried about how climate changes impacting itself. jason says it is time for a rethink. >> we used to think out of sight, out of mind and they were just dumb stuff in the ocean. now it is not so out of sight. going forward, i worry about my kids. will they get to enjoy the ocean like i do? >> there is no risk to california fish. it may feel like a plan is out of our hands but there are steps we can take to help restore and maintain our oceans. let s take a live look now at nantucket in massachusetts. right now, new england is bracing for hurricane lee as it slowly moves in. gusty winds and heavy rain lashed bermuda last night as the storm tracked northward toward the western

atlantic ocean. along the coast of maine, fishermen and lobstermen worked to get their boats to safety. maine is expected to see the brunt of the storm tomorrow. >> with maine under its first hurricane watch in 15 years, president biden approved an emergency declaration for the entire state. to our other mac now a little closer to home. first alert meteorologist darren peck is tracking our forecast. >> we are going to point out a little bit of a cooldown coming up for our weekend. before we get to that, it is helpful to get where we are today. these numbers for today are right on the mark for average. you can see the temperature in the west bay. we are about one hour off of the daytime highs. we will hit these numbers within the next hour and the official center. mid-80s out in the tri-valley. take a look at

redwood city in the 70s. out at the beaches, we are not getting a whole lot of sun. i don't know if half moon bay necessarily will but the general trend has been with the marine layer to hang on at the coast but it has been clearing out in the bay as we have already seen happen. we are looking at sunshine for the inland locations. temperatures in the mid-70s today for oakland and the mid-80s inland. take a look at the number here for san francisco. when we take a look back toward our communities in the north bay, temperatures through santa rosa and petaluma all climbing back up to right on the mark for average for this time of year. we have our monitor here . the most important tool to help us get a sense of how the

temperatures will behave, plenty of sunshine. we will see that build back in in the overnight hours. it will fill in the bay and fill in much of the inland valleys as well. the only other thing that has been in our sky has been a little haze. if you have been noticing it and wondering it -- where it is coming from, there will be another plume of smoke coming off of those likely over the next three or four days, likely if not longer. we will probably pull in a little more smoke as it continues to do that. keep in mind you may be seeing a little bit of haze out there. that is the only thing. we will start off with our warmest microclimate. this is where we come to the coolest day. it will be over the weekend, saturday and sunday. we will see the temperatures take a dip from thursday and friday. we will stay down for monday and then it will be a gradual warm-up into next week. we will make it back up into the mid-80s again for the warmest

inland valleys. it is not like this cooldown for the weekend is a cold snap and it is certainly not like the warm-up coming after that will be a heat wave but there is a subtle trend on here and we see it play out for the bay as well. temperatures warming up into the mid-70s by the time we've gotten toward the middle part and late part of next week and we will bring in our last microclimate and check in on the coast where the temperatures stay in the 60s the whole way through. the temperatures are not going to budge a whole lot from the mid-60s. the 49ers defense was in midseason form last sunday against the steelers but there is one thing head coach kyle shanahan wishes they do differently. our matt lively explains in this afternoon's red and gold report. >> the 49ers' defense past the

test and we quit giving up seven points to the steelers on the road but this week, a much tougher test against the rams offense. matt stafford is healthy and he threw for 334 yards in week one. that was the third most in the nfl. stafford will have his work cut out for him against the 49ers stingy defense. san francisco reeled in two interceptions from steelers quarterback kenny pickett including this one from talanoa hufanga in the fourth quarter. he got fancy trying to lateral the ball to tashaun gipson but it was ruled a poor pass. head coach kyle shanahan was not a fan. >> not great. he did not lateral it. the guy in front of him needed to turn around. it was a good setup for the option. it was right if the guy was behind him. >> for the red and gold report, i'm matt lively.

british singer/songwriter ed sheeran is in the bay for a couple of concerts. our chopper was over levi's stadium as preparations were happening for the show. this comes after taylor swift and beyonc÷ both had sold out shows at the stadium in recent months. ed sheeran is expected to drop 70,000 fans. that is significantly more than both swift and beyonc÷ but his tickets are going for a lot less on resale sites, as low as $72 on stubhub!. ed sheeran is also playing tonight at

people in southern california are venturing out into the pacific to see an electric blue ocean spectacular put on by dolphins. check out this light show. videos captured from the coastline show the mammals jumping through glowing waves and even with humans walking through sand, igniting a neon blue spark. this happened in newport beach. marine experts say the bioluminescent water as a result of a massive bloom of photosynthetic plankton. >> when the waves are crashing, that is agitating the plankton. when our boats moved through it, that is agitating them. it
