for information in the case. good morning, and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. it's the start of a new week, but instead of reporting for work, thousands of members of the uaw will remain on the picket lines. union negotiators held talks with carmakers over the weekend, but little progress was reported on reaching a deal to end their strike. meanwhile, the walkout is already having ripple effects across the industry. ian lee has the very latest. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. you know, this isn't your typical strike. the union isn't having all of its 145,000 members walk out. instead they're targeting three large assembly plants from the big three automakers. the union's president says this is to maximize pressure at the bargaining table. top democrats came to michigan to show solidarity with striking autoworkers over the weekend. >> we're going to be in this fight with you until we win the

fight. [ applause ] >> reporter: thousands of united auto workers members at a ford plant in michigan, a stellantis plant in ohio, and a general motors factory in missouri walked off the job friday at midnight after their contract expired. the union said negotiations with ford on saturday were productive, and talks with stellantis are expected to take place today. neither side commented on how talks with general motors went over the weekend. >> our demands are just. we're asking for our fair share in this economy, and the fruits of our labor. >> reporter: the uaw is demanding at least a 36% raise, cost of living and job protections, as well as an unwinding of concessions made during the great recession. currently automakers are only offering a raise of about 20%. >> we are at the table now ready to keep going and get this relieved as quickly as possible. >> we just want what's owed to. >> reporter: local dealers are concerned about the impact of a prolonged strike. >> the likelihood of prices going up should this strike linger are almost certain.

>> reporter: so are other business owners who rely on local autoworkers. >> it has a trickle-down effect. a lot of people from gm come here on a daily basis, get ship rates and food. we may not see them for a while. >> reporter: already the strike has caused ford to temporary lay off 600 nonstriking workers at the wayne, michigan, plant. and while these talks are under way, president biden is adding his voice to it saying he respects the workers' rights, also saying that, quote, they should go further to ensure record profits mean record contracts for uaw. and this weekend, the union's president was speaking on "face the nation" saying that the union is ready to go and do whatever is necessary to have their demands met. >> could be a long haul. ian lee, thank you. president biden is in new york city ahead of his speech tomorrow before the u.n. general assembly. last night he was spotted leaving a downtown restaurant

with his daughter ashley and other members of his family. earlier in washington, mr. biden faced questions about an impeachment inquiry as lawmakers try to avert a government shutdown. skyler henry reports. >> reporter: president biden yet again brushing off house republicans launching a formal impeachment inquiry into him alleging he benefited from his son hunter's business dealings. the move comes as speaker kevin mccarthy is looking to shore up votes to keep the government open as hard-line conservatives say meet their list of demands or embrace a shutdown. >> i want to make sure we don't shut down. i don't think that is a win for the american public. >> reporter: some of the farthest right members in the house say one of their sticking points -- no more funding for ukraine. the country's president, volodymyr zelenskyy, is set to travel to d.c. this week. >> having him here is going to be very, very persuasive. the last time we had votes on the house floor on the issue of aid for ukraine, nearly 300 members voted in affirmative out

of 435. a majority of the republicans voted in the affirmative. >> reporter: as concerns grow over the looming shutdown, voters are uncertain about the economic fallout and their finances. new cbs news polling shows nearly half of registered voters say they're worse off now than before the start of the pandemic, outpacing those who are better off. of those who say they're doing worse, voters in large part are backing former president trump. now that cbs news polling also showed that it was unclear to registered voters whether they could get a full second term from either president biden or former president donald trump. though more than half of those voters think the former president could finish all four years. skyler henry, cbs news, the white house. parts of new england and canada are cleaning up this morning after large surf and tree toppling winds pummelled the area. the remnants of hurricane lee swept through the coast bringing high winds and causing dangerous surf conditions on cape cod.

nearly 200,000 people were left without power in nova scotia over the weekend. lee is being blamed for the death of at least one person in maine. lee made landfall in canada on saturday as a post-tropical cyclone. and in new york city, a day care center operator and her tenant were charged last night with murder in the death of a 1-year-old boy. police say the boy had just started at the day care and was exposed to fentanyl there. astrid martinez reports. >> reporter: the parents of 1-year-old nicholas dominici say they can't imagine life without their son who died at a licensed home-based day care just a week after they enrolled him. first responders found nicholas and two other children unconscious at the day care friday. police say narcan was used to revive them in an apparent fentanyl exposure. a fourth child picked up earlier

was rushed to the hospital by his mother after looking lethargic. >> the nypd issued a search warrant at the day care center where we discovered a kilo press. this is commonly used by drug dealers when packaging large quantities of drugs. >> reporter: day care owner grei mendez and building attendant carlisto brito face nearly a dozen charges including murder, assault, and child endangerment. new york city's mayor visited te children and spoke on the nation's opioid crisis. >> this is a real wake-up call for individuals who have opioids or fentanyl in their homes. >> reporter: three children remain hospitalized. one in critical condition. astrid martinez, cbs news, bronx, new york. overseas, north korean leader kim jong-un is on his way home from russia. russian state media says kim's train departed yesterday following a farewell ceremony in eastern russia. during his trip, kim met with russian president vladimir putin where it's believed the two leaders discussed north korea

paint on the landmark. the demonstrators who call themselves last generation demanded that the use of fossil fuels end. all 14 activists were arrested. two pilots die when their planes collide after a race, and authorities search for a suspect who shot and killed a sheriff's deputy in his patrol car. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." the "los angeles times" reports an l.a. county sheriff's deputy was killed in an ambush. authorities say deputy ryan clinkunbroomer died after he was shot wild in his patrol car. video shows the patrol car slowing to a stop just outside the palmdale sheriff's station. a second vehicle can be seen pulling alongside. after a short pause, drives off. the deputy was found unconscious in his car and died later at a hospital. authorities are offering a $250,000 reward for information that helps catch the suspect. "the reno gazette journal" says two pilots killed in an air

racing event in nevada have been identified. chris rushing and nick macy were killed when their planes collided as they were landing. it happened just after the national championship air races in reno ended. rushing finished first in the race, and macy placed second. both were from california. no one else was hurt. the cause of the crash is under investigation. the "new york times" says the death toll from the maui wildfire has dropped to 97 after weeks of dna review. for more than three weeks officials said 115 people were killed in last month's wildfire that destroyed most of lahaina. the medical examiner said the process of confirming dead victims and identifying them had been difficult. the number of people unaccounted for has fallen to 31. still to come, iphone update. how making and listening to calls will be different as apple's latest operating system is released today. y. your recorord label is takining off.

here's a look at the forecast in some cities around the country. ♪ drew barrymore is backtracking one week after announcing that her talk show would return amid the ongoing writers' strike. she responded to the backlash on instagram posting "i have listened to everyo, and i am making the decision to pause the show's premiere until the strike isver. i ha no words to express my deepest apologies to anyone i have hurt, and of course to our incredible team who works on the show and has made it what it is today." she added she hopes there's a rules soon. -- resolution between the two parties soon.
