well, good morning and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. we begin with the start of the united nations general assembly. president biden and the ukrainian president volodymyr zelenskyy are set to address the gathering of world leaders today and it comes amid tensions that remain high over the war in ukraine. jarred hill is just outside with more on what to expect today. good morning, jarred. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. president biden touted his decades of experience in international diplomacy during a fund-raiser last night, but a spokesperson i spoke to said he's going to have a lot to balance in this speech as he tries to rally a divided world. at this year's united nations general assembly, president biden prepared to make a political power play on the global stage. >> he has to go into this not just as the leader of the west but as one of the powers competing for and contending for the support and allegiance from a wider set of countries. >> reporter: biden is expected to continue rallying support for ukraine on its war with russia,

competition with china, and efforts to fight climate change also on the agenda. as over the weekend climate protesters demanded action outside the u.n. the massive gathering of world leaders is also an enormous security operation. >> their job is to discuss the future of the world, and our job is to make sure they can do it without disruption. >> reporter: authorities say they are not expecting any specific threat, but with 150 delegations here in new york at one time, they're not taking any chances. from the ground to the skies, tens of thousands of officers have their eyes on new york city as the world watches. now, while china and russia are expected to be focal points during this year's u.n. jen val assembly, leaders of those

nations are not going to be here. in fact, anne-marie, president biden is going to be the only one out of five major world powers attending the general assembly this year. back to you. >> very interesting. jarred hill at the united nations. jarred, thank you. well, five american citizens wrongfully detained for years inside iran are headed home. thaw were released from iran yesterday after months of secret diplomatic talks between the two nations. the high-stakes deal includes the release of billions of dollars in frozen iranian oil funds. margaret brennan reports from washington. >> reporter: joy and relief after five americans and two family members touched down in qatar and were handed over to u.s. officials. secretary of state antony blinken said he had an emotional conversation with the freed americans. >> it's very good to be able to say that our fellow citizens are free after enduring something that i think would be difficult for any of us to imagine. >> reporter: for 51-year-old businessman siamak namazi,

it's the end of an eight-year ordeal according to his attorney jared genser. >> he's missed eight years of the best of his life. he wants to get married and have kids. he has to figure out where he's going to live and get a job. he has to rebuild his life. >> reporter: it's the same year emad shargi was first arrested and held without trial in iran's notorious prison what is considered trumped up espionage charges. in return five were granted clemency. two will remain in the u.s., two others will be returned to iran. critics worry now as part of the deal iranians will have access to $6 billion held in a restricted account in qatar. >> these monies can be used to support terrorist organizations and adventuresome actions of iran. >> repororter: the b biden adadministratition insiststs th treasury can prevent that misuse and only permit humanitarian

be called on to stand up and join the strike. >> well, nearly 13,000 workers walked out on friday. donald trump's campaign told the "associated press" he'll skip next week's republican presidential debate and instead visit the detroit area to speak with striking autoworkers. u.s. military say that have located crash site of a missing fighter jet in south carolina. the debris was found in rural williams burg county, 80 miles east of the joint base in charleston. the marine corps stealth fighter jet crashed sunday after the pilot ejected and parachuted to safety. residents are being asked to avoid the area while a recovery team works to secure it. an investigation is underway to find out why the pilot ejected. and a suspect has been arrested in the ambush killing of a los angeles county sheriff's deputy. 30-year-old deputy ryane

clinkunbroomer was shot saturday while he sat in his patrol car just days after getting engaged. elise preston reports. >> reporter: dozens of s.w.a.t. officers surrounded this home before sunrise, determined to capture the man suspected of gunning down one of their own. >> we believe we have the murderer of our deputy in custody. >> reporter: after barricading himself for several hours, officers deployed chemical agents, forcing 29-year-old kevin salazar to surrender. >> our deputies gave this suspect an opportunity to peacefully give up. that is not the right that was afforded to our deputy three days ago out here across the street. >> reporter: 30-year-old deputy sheriff ryane clinkunbroomer was fatally shot ambush style 80 yards from the station. this video shows the moment a dark gray toyota pulls up to the
