i'm anne-marie green. the focus switches to climate change today at the united nations general assembly gathering in new york. yesterday president biden and ukrainian president volodymer zelenskyy made pleas at the u.n. for unity against russia. jarred hill is in new york with the latest on all of this. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. you know, the support may be there against russia, but getting ukraine more money could end up being a bit more of an uphill climb. meanwhile, as you mentioned, today is about the climate as u.n. leaders try to reverse backsliding on certain goals. world leaders at the united nations general assembly will hold a climate action summit today, just weeks after the u.n. declared this summer the hottest on record. >> we need to continue tackling the challenge that most affect people's lives from conflict to climate change to corruption and beyond. >> reporter: president biden speak at the metropolitan museum of art last night hours after taking center stage at the u.n.

to push for continued support of ukraine against russia's invasion. >> we have to stand up to this aggression today to deter other would-be aggressors tomorrow. >> reporter: ukraine's president doubled down on that message. >> while russia is pushing the world to the final war, ukraine is doing everything to ensure that after russian aggression no one in the world will dare to attack any nation. >> reporter: already ukraine has received hundreds of billions of dollars in international aid. now house republican leaders are questioning president biden's request for another $24 billion package. >> where's the accountability, what is the plan for victory? that's what the american public wants to know. >> reporter: yesterday president biden said he's committed to making sure iran never gets its hands on a nuclear weapon, as five americans who spent years wrongfully detained by tehran finally arrived home on u.s. soil. so zelenskyy is scheduled to meet with president biden at the

white house tomorrow as house republicans push back against moremong. -- more funding. anne-marie, the senate is talking about combining ukraine aid with a short-term spending bill which would be needed to avoid a government shutdown, meaning this could all get messy. >> that's a great way to describe it. thank you very much. hunter biden is set to plead not guilty to federal firearms charges. the move revealed yesterday in court documents comes after the collapse of a plea deal in a long-running federal investigation. the deal would have kept the president's son out of prison. he's accused of lying about his drug use when he bought a gun in 2018. no date has been set for his arraignment. if convicted hunter biden could face up to 25 years in prison and $750,000 in fines. republican lawmakers say they'll hold their first impeachment inquiry into president biden next week. the house oversight committee is expected to focus on allegations the president was involved in

his son hunter's overseas businesses. committee chair james comer says he plans to subpoena hunter biden's personal and business bank records as early as this week. the white house has called the effort a political stunt. more now on those newly released americans who spent years being wrongfully detained in iran. they are finally back on u.s. soil after landing at an army base in virginia. natalie brand has the latest from washington. death of a 1-year-old boy ebbs posed to fentanyl at a new york city home day care center. the owner and another person are now facing federal charges and the possibility of life if prison if convicted. federal prosecutors say the bronx day care was used as a front to distribute large amounts of fentanyl. investigators say they recovered a kilogram of fentanyl near mats used for napping at the day care. three other children were hospitalized. police say they are searching for the owner's husband. the crash of an f-35 fighter jet in south carolina remains a mstery. federal investigators are now combing through the crash site, and they're trying to determine how a warplane ended up 60 miles from where the pilot safely ejected. david martin reports. >> reporter: it took nearly 28 hours to find it, but crews finally started picking up the pieces from the crash of one of this country's most sophisticated jet fighters. >> boom. >> i mean, it's scary to think something landed that close to our house. >> reporter: the pilot of the

marine f-35 ejected sunday afternoon just a mile from the charleston airport. but the plane went missing, forcing the military to tweet out an appeal for any information on its whereabouts. >> how does it just disappear, and how does the pentagon ask for the public's help in finding it? it's just a huge embarrassment. >> reporter: the plane was one of two f-35s flying at 1,000 feet as they came in to land when something went wrong. >> f-35 -- >> reporter: the pilot who ejected had already been discharged from the hospital by the time the $100 million plane was found 60 miles away. >> ground crews are searching. >> reporter: a former f-35 pilot who once commanded the same unit -- it doesn't surprise you that a plane could have an emergency serious enough for the pilot to eject and still be able to fly another 60 miles? >> it's a pretty rare event.

firefighter in firefighters in australia are battling dozens of wildfires in what authorities are calling catastrophic fire conditions along the southern coast. parts of australia are experiencing unusually hot and dry conditions with springtime temperatures nearing 100 degrees. some are as high as 60 degrees above normal. 20 schools were closed, and a total fire ban is in effect in sydney. an amazon driver's bitten by a snake, and an american reporter being held in russia appears in court. those are some of the resigns on -- headlines on the "morning newsstand." the "wall street journal" reports a russian court declined to consider "wall street journal" reporter evan gershkovich's pretrial detention appeal. the 31-year-old u.s. citizen appeared in a moscow courtroom yesterday seeking to be released from jail ahead of his unscheduled trial. he was arrested in march on espionage charges. the court returned his case to a lower court citing unspecified procedural violations. the "journal" and the u.s. government deny the charges and have asked for his immediate release.

cbs boston reports on the death of a new england patriots fan during sunday night's game at gillette stadium. video that's too graphic to show reveals some of what happened in the stands during the game against the miami dolphins. witnesses say 53-year-old dale mooney got into a fight with a man wearing a dolphins jersey. the unidentified dolphins fan allegedly punched mooney who fell over and never regained consciousness. no one has been arrested, and authorities are investigating the incident. and "the tampa bay times" says an amazon driver is in serious condition after being bitten by a rattlesnake in florida. the martin county sheriff's office says the driver placed the box next to the home's front door monday night when the eastern diamondback bit her. she immediately became ill and called for help. officials caught the snake and euthanized it. still to come, countdown to christmas. hallmark announces dozens of new movies leading up to the holiday.

investors are waiting for the bank to announce whether or not interest rates will rise once again. the dow lost 106 points. the nasdaq was down 32, and the s&p 500 lost 9 points. disney has ambitious plans for the next decade. the company will dole out $60 billion to build out its theme parks, cruise lines, and resorts. more than 83,000 cases of individually wrapped kraft cheese slices have been recalled because of a potential choking hazard. kraft heinz says there was a temporary issue with one of its wrapping machines making it possible that a thin strip of film may remain on the slice after the wrapper was removed. the recall applies to 16-ounce kraft singles with a use by date between january 10th and 27th 2024, as well as three-pound multipacks of singles with the use by date between january 9th and 13th, and the 16th of next year. and get your hot cocoa ready.
