now 11:00 , what took so long to get the word out. plus, this san francisco business went out of its way to become burglary-proof. it was not a smashing success. >> it is frustrating. and a red flag warning taking effect as we speak. the fire spotters staying up all night so that you can rest easy. from kpix, this is the latest with sara donchey on cbs news bay area. >> hello, i am sara donchey. if you are anything like me, your eyes have been watering all day

and perhaps, like me, you had to stop at the store for extra strength eyedrops! paul is here with his glasses on for that reason. >> i decided to go with the spectacles this evening! >> so this is day two of smoky skies. to add insult to injury, a red flag warning just went into effect, and of course the last thing we need is smoke from anywhere. >> not critical, but still something we have to watch. we will talk about that in just a second. >> when it comes to what is already in the air, we had and you had some tough questions for the air quality management district, like why not send out an alert sooner? here is what the spokesperson said. >> because we are having this unusual smoke event, things got more complicated overnight and yesterday and into the morning so there was sort of an ad hoc revision just to protect public

health. >> thoughts? >> if there was any revision to the forecast it was not made public, which is their job. they posted the forecast at 8: 44 yesterday morning. we showed it at 5: 02 yesterday evening and i called them out for saying, why have you not updated the forecast? they did not updated at 5: 02, i said that, and another 16 hours went by before the updated the forecast at the same time they do every day and then issued the spare the air alert, almost 24 hours after it had reached the unhealthy for sensitive groups level in san francisco which spread across the rest of the bay area. >> we were texting about this and i said paul, i am having symptoms! >> you might ask, what is the difference between an air quality advisory and spare the air, and the answer is it is how the public reacts to it. you do not want teens having

practice outdoors when the air quality is in the unhealthy category and this was what we were seeing. this was the view out towards the santa clara valley. air quality was nasty once again. let's look at the current air quality map. this is where we stand at the moment. orange and red, but generally the official air quality readings , generally it has been in the unhealthy for sensitive groups range for the past several hours, which is still bad air quality but not as bad as it was yesterday. we should see slow improvements tomorrow and on friday and then things should improve as we head into the weekend, but we have to get there first. we also have the red flag warning that went into effect from 5:00 tomorrow. this is for the north bay mountains. we will see wind gusts of 35 to 40 miles per hour and humidity levels dropping down to the 20 to 30% range. while those are not critical fire weather conditions, it is still enough considering the dryness of the
11:04 pm
fire fuels. so that is the last thing that we need with so much smoke already in the atmosphere. we will watch that very carefully and hopefully we get through 5:00 tomorrow without anything getting going. you know that sudden blanket of smoke caught some people in the north bay by surprise, but they told andrea nakano that made them realize how lucky we have been this fire season. >> reporter: susanna and her daughter finally decided to get some outdoor time wednesday night. the smoke drifted in on tuesday and forced her to cancel some outdoor plans. >> i did not expect the smoke to becoming and i was planning on taking her to the park. i had to find some more indoor activities. >> reporter: the smoke was visible all over marin county , susanna said, as she felt the impact of this smoky air. >> it starts to smell like
11:05 pm
campfires and it is getting a little bit thicker. you cannot see as far. >> reporter: for the most part the smoke did not stop people from carrying on with their after school activities. kids were seen playing baseball and soccer. some parents took a proactive approach to keep their kids safe, however. >> i pulled my daughter out of swim school for today. >> reporter: parents tried to keep their kids indoors and some were seen wearing a mask. but for north bay residents, this is nothing like what i have seen in the past. >> i think we have dealt with much worse in the past. i don't think anybody is really freaking out, because we are lucky that this is all we had for the year. >> this has been such a welcome relief. i'm so happy that i have not had to use these at all.
11:06 pm
>> reporter: public health officers say to wear an n-95 mask. the smoke is expected to clear out by friday. >> so you want to monitor the air quality in your area, which we would understand if you did. we have posted links to the story on kpix.com. being a business owner in san francisco can be really hard, but this makes it almost impossible. we talked with in the inner richmond last month. thieves removed an entire piece of glass from the front door to get inside instead of just smashing it, which would have been easier. they took off with thousands of dollars from the register. the owner said, let's go cashless. it did not matter. the restaurant was targeted again and this time the thieves were not as stealthy. they smashed their way in, but since there was no cash they left with only a speaker, but they did $500 in damage by smashing that door. uncle lloyd's has been around some 14 years, but since the

pandemic they have been broken into three times. >> like i said multiple times from the other incidents, it is frustrating. >> john says he will ask his landlord to see if they will reinforce the door with a metal gate. from break-ins to hiring struggles too high rent, san francisco restaurants have been struggling to survive. some had to raise prices, but one is making a point to lower them. lauren toms shows us why. >> reporter: one hour before opening its doors, the team races to get ready for the evening ahead. but this week they were hoping to see more familiar faces. the restaurant is trying something nearly unheard-of. they have lowered their prices for both food and wine.
11:08 pm
>> we started to see less and less of those familiar faces and that became a problem when we really did start noticing that a certain segment of the community have been priced out. >> reporter: the intention is pure, tapping back into the community of the neighborhood. for owner david mayfield, it is personal. >> i walked through the space and thought to myself, how cool would it be if i opened a business six blocks from where my mom opened her business? my mom lives four blocks from here, so she still walks here and everybody knows her when she walks through the door. >> reporter: it is a difference you can see, only by a couple of dollars, he says the customers will feel it in their pockets. >> we have lowered the price by six dollars. that is a considerable cost savings to the guest. for us, pun intended, we rely on that because we are handing the savings back to our guest.
11:09 pm
>> reporter: but it is unlikely to become a trend. he says most restaurants do not have the capability of skill in their inventory away from high-cost items, getting rid of pricier proteins and focusing on pizza and pasta. >> at the end of the day it is important to continuously evaluate what you do and what you value. >> reporter: that value was seen for each member of their team, who will not see cuts to their compensation despite the drop in prices. >> we would rather shut this restaurant down then lower a single wage or lower the quality of our product. >> reporter: a welcome shift for the community who can always expect a seat at their table. >> i know i have never heard of anything like that! it seems like prices always go up. so have people notice? >> reporter: when you look at the menu side-by-side you can clearly see a difference in pricing. it is not like it is

bay mountains, and there is a guy staying up all night to make sure that there is no rude awakening for the rest of us. >> you really have to be aware, even when it seems like it is benign. it can change quickly. we monitor the radio on and if it is high winds we stay up all night to watch. >> doug koontz is a retired fire captain who scans the horizon for signs of trouble. >> we can quickly give an update on what is happening with google maps and knowing the county well. that is something that cameras and a.i. can't quite -- we enhance their ability to see what is going on as well. >> doug says volunteers will be at the post until we get two inches of rain. we think that dog is an espresso man or energy drink guy? >> you might just be there for the experience and just awake because it is what keeps them awake! kind of like storm chasers or something like that. >> that is going to require information espresso. although i have a kid. i am well prepped

for staying up all night! >> that is different kind of training entirely. hopefully he is board up there and nothing gets going and we get through this red flag warning without new fires starting. we have enough smoke already. let's watch the big picture pattern. what is causing these gusty offshore winds? it is the same situation. this is squeezing the atmosphere over northern california and is sending smoke from southwestern oregon and far northern california down the coast and into the bay area. this will continue tomorrow. the winds relax and continue to shift beginning on friday which is when the westerly winds kick in. it will not completely remove all the smoke but will start to have a beneficial effect. you can see that in the air quality outlook over the next several days. plenty of these unhealthy for sensitive groups and just flat out unhealthy air quality readings today. some improvement on friday, but i think friday might have to be another spare
11:16 pm
the air alert day with unhealthy for sensitive groups readings . then we see improvement on saturday and we should be into the good category by sunday, so there is light at the end of the tunnel. we are watching conditions as we head through the rest of tonight, especially through the north bay mountains. gusty offshore winds and low humidity levels, but again, not below 10%. in the 20 to 30 to 35% range around vacaville and some of the higher elevations above those communities. humidity levels do not recover through the first half of the day, but late in the day as the winds shift, we start to see those numbers bump up a little bit. so the red flag warning goes until 5:00 tomorrow and after that we are not entirely out of the woods until we get rain, but speaking of that we have our first autumn rain chance in the forecast, mainly monday night of next week. forecast models are all over the place,
11:17 pm
so it still could go either way. maybe some parts of the bay pick up some light rainfall. in the santa clara valley, i don't think you will see more than a few sprinkles, but around the bay and the coast , some chance of at least modest amounts of rain. the really good news, this is a more substantial rainmaker for those fire zones and far northern california and in southwestern oregon. right now, still that haze on the horizon. temperatures go back down to a mix of 50s and low 60s. we end up in the 50s across the board by tomorrow morning which is just a bit on the cool side for the north bay valleys. highs tomorrow continue to run a couple degrees below average. we are in the 60s and 70s around the bay with a mix of 70s and low 80s inland. temperatures don't change much over the next several days, other than our alert day tomorrow. the other feature of note is the chance of showers during the seven-day forecast, mainly monday evening and possibly moving in before the sun goes down but more likely monday night. the best chance is the further north you

go. so the santa clara valley, you will see some clouds overhead and maybe you get a sprinkle. that is going to be about it. but it is still september so any rain chance at this point is a bonus and especially good news that we get that rain focused on the spots that need it the most. >> bonus rain! thanks, paul. fistfights on a train sound like trouble. these guys and gals paid to see it. vern? straight ahead in sports, the giants with another gut punch! now what? plus, hello, old friend! it is the return of the kpix top
