shooting clears out a car dealership. what we are learning about a young woman who went to work. plus, many of us are quite literally sick of the smoke. will it clear out by the weekend? the faithful might be right after this hot start. and there is this. i am ryan yamamoto and i will take you for a low ride through the streets of the bay area. >> from kpix this is the late news with sara donchey on cbs news bay area. hello, i am sara donchey. it sometimes feels like we cannot escape gun violence . tonight we are talking about it at an east bay car dealership which became the scene of a
1:39 am
shootout. the question, as always, when something this senseless happens, is why? investigators are still working on that. our andrea nakano spoke to people who saw the chaos unfold. >> reporter: this is the berkeley dealership and yellow tape surrounds this area as they look at why a gunman walked in and shot a female employee. berkeley and albany police began getting calls about an active shooter in the area. owns an auto repair shop down the street and was right around the corner to help. >> they ran over here. the girls were crying. one of the
1:40 am
girls fell off the van from toyota. she was right next to the worker who got shot. >> reporter: investigators have not given a motive, but fleeing victims told pele that the victims knew each other. >> i guess it was domestic violence and the boyfriend shot the girl there. >> reporter: many businesses were forced to close their doors. police said they found the shooter and signed and exchanged gunfire. they have not said whether police killed him or he shot himself. >> just really shocked about what happened. just really shocked. >> reporter: berkeley police confirmed that family members arrived on scene shortly after the shooting but won't say much more about the room and suspect
1:41 am
and whether they know each other. >> so sad for her. i know she had two kids. >> reporter: berkeley police also opened an administrative investigation. great skies across the bay again today, but instead of our signature fog we are caught in a cloud of nasty smog, darren. i know tomorrow we have to have another spare the air alert. >> you know that air quality got worse from 5:00 until now? for the first half of the day it was moderate and then things started to change. that is a view of today. let me show you what it looks like right now from the camera that sits above the santa clara valley. you can see the inversion holding the smoke in. that is stevens creek boulevard right there. i will show you the current reading for san jose, which was monitored for most of the day. right around 7:00 tonight it picked up into unhealthy for sensitive groups. this is
1:42 am
looking at the epa sensors. they are the gold standard. they are calibrated by experts. they don't update them as often. but they are really high-quality. however, there is another tool that many of us have gotten used to using, considering how much we are always aware of tracking the stuff. the low-cost provider sensors. they update more often. they might not be as high quality. because there are so many of them, they tend to pick out trends. this one got a lot worse starting around 5:00, because the onshore winds came back and dragged this over the bay. most of the sensors right now are just really flat-out unhealthy. does not matter if you are in a sensitive group. you can see how the smoke came in today. this is a replay from the last four or five hours. we will wake up again tomorrow,
1:43 am
but here is the good news that sara was talking about for the weekend. when we get to saturday, there will be a stronger westerly surge that will take the smoke and start pushing it away, however, we are not there yet. so whatever you have been doing to go easy on yourself, you have to do it for one more day. not only is this an air quality advisory day, but also a first alert day. there is a chance of rain on monday, so we will change things up. for now, sara, back to you. the 49ers are living up to the hype that started even before the season did. our vern glenn is that levi's tonight. vern, that was some impressive work on a short week!
1:44 am
>> reporter: sara, what a start! for the first time since 2019, the 49ers are 3-0 and they are not showing any signs of slowing down. the last time they started like this it ended up with me doing a lot of live shots from the super bowl! some stats for you. the 49ers are 8-0 with brock purdy as the starter. cristian mccaffrey continues his hot start to the season. he had 119 total yards and a touchdown. late in the first half this gave san francisco a 17-3 lead. they were without brandon aiyuk, but you wouldn't know it from the way the deebo samuel played! 27-yard touchdown catch to put the game away in the fourth quarter. they dominated the line of scrimmage in a 30-12 final. >> i told the guys, if they want to win and have a weekend off, we have to win. these guys did, now we can sit back and enjoy how these past few weeks
1:45 am
have gone and get ready to go on monday. >> we have 14 more games. being 3-0, it makes everything feel better. but it is not time to rest. we can do a lot better. we can play a lot better. that is what we are focused on. >> reporter: all right. so the 49ers have 10 days off before they host the cardinals on this field. so many takeaways from this game and we will have more later on in sports and that is in just a few minutes, sara! >> thank you so much, vern. we appreciate you staying up with us. this was not just a home opener but a celebration that transformed football. our joslyn moran was there for latino heritage night. >> reporter: the niners are 3-0 but it was also latino heritage night! they come here representing their culture. so in honor of latino heritage
1:46 am
night, we will say this in spanish. the niners remain undefeated! from the flags to the food to the fitz, fans represent. oscar torres says he has been a fan since he was a little kid. he came to the game with his two kids and he says it is special that the 49ers have a latino heritage night. >> if you look around, there is a big latino fan base here. we appreciate that they see that! >> reporter: you could see that throughout the parking lot before the game. one family was celebrating a birthday party, so they had to bring that. then there were 49er flags throughout, some with the mexican flag in the middle.
1:47 am
before the game the touchdown team came out with sugar skull flags. during halftime there was mariachi music and ballet folklorico. cristian mccaffrey gave megan and her friend a football. she has a good feeling about this season. >> we are going to go to the super bowl, baby! we are going to win it! >> reporter: oscar think so, too. >> i think this season is going to be special. i believe the football gods are finally smiling down on us. this is our year.
1:48 am
>> reporter: this is the feeling we got from fans all season long. they are hoping for something special. you have to be pretty drunk to crash your car into a liquor store, but one bay area driver did. we spill the tea on one driver, then the best thing we have seen all day. >> this one weighs about 85 pounds, then you have to lean back and stick your chest out and hope you don't fall. >> this was ryan yamamoto, but this was somebody else entirely! this guy drove through something
1:51 am
santa rosa police say this driver was so drunk that he crashed into a store and then went inside to buy more alcohol. police said 34-year-old jesus ortiz blew a 4.32 and was also driving on a suspended license. he was taken to the hospital and ararrested. remember the mcdonald's hot coffee lawsuit from the '90s? tonight a san francisco woman
1:52 am
is suing the golden arches for the same thing. she says the coffee spilled onto her lap, severely burning her and that restaurant employees refused to help her, but mcdonald's is disputing that. in 1992 another woman suffered for nearly a half million dollars after suffering from third-degree burns in the same mishap. a fairfield man is suing starbucks, but this one has nothing to do with the coffee. he says the fruit drinks are missing fruit. the claim is that the drinks don't contain the advertised mango, passionfruit or a÷ai but are mainly just water, grape juice concentrate and sugar. starbucks wants the case dismissed saying that the names refer to the flavors and not necessarily the ingredients. a judge disagreed, so the case is going to court. we are celebrating hispanic

heritage all this month and a big part of the culture revolves around cars and cruising and low riders. for equally long, part of the culture was demonized and even criminalized. that is changing now. as ryan yamamoto shows us, one man is keeping the tradition alive, but instead of writing on four wheels he is riding on two . >> reporter: low and slow. the perfect day to roll through the streets. a chance for antonio and his crew, his family, to ride with pride. >> i am out here representing my latino culture and i feel very good. i feel blessed. this is what i wanted to do, represent our culture.
1:54 am
>> reporter: where representation is created down in the basement of his tenderloin home, sparking inspiration while shaping and smoothing his newest creation. >> almost 50%, 60% of the work is already done. >> reporter: when finished it would become the 12th low rider bike that antonio has designed since he began building bicycles 15 years ago. >> whatever i have here, i will bring it here. this is the best. you want to show off your art, your work. >> reporter: expressing himself on two wheels in culture known for their elaborate creations on four. >> i always have a dream of having a low rider car with those kind of murals, but i did not have enough money to do that. >> reporter: and his art has taken him just as far. look at his latest bike. he simply calls it joker. >> so i have this one right here, two, three, four, five,
1:55 am
six. >> reporter: a bicycle that he uses as a show bike for display that is winning awards. >> this one already, we got 10 for this. >> reporter: but beyond the awards and accolades, his family is his biggest victory. especially when fine-tuning the bike that his wife, bertha, rides. >> when he needs help, because this is two people work, we always help each other. everyone in our club helps each other with everything. i love it. i love all this. >> reporter: the love reflected on the bikes themselves. >> this is my son, my little son, my wife, myself.
1:56 am
>> reporter: a family that rides together expressing their latino culture through their club and crew, where everyone is included. including ryan white, who grew up in a hispanic neighborhood in southern california in the late 70s. >> it is the love of the culture that they see in me. i speak spanish as well. my true love of latino culture comes out. so they are not going to care that i am white. >> reporter: bringing people together from different races and cultures. >> that is how i express myself with my friends, is as a family! >> reporter: all riding together, low and slow! >> antonio said he turned down a $10,000 offer for one of his bikes. he wants to display them in a museum one day.
1:57 am
darren wants to talk about what has pretty much dominated the week. everybody is talking about the smoke. i was mentioning the other day on the show that i have to buy eyedrops. paul was struggling, wearing glasses. everybody has a smoke story this week. >> yeah, this is for real. the question is why did it get so bad all of a sudden . we are going to cover all that. so first i will show you where it is coming from. we are going to use the high resolution satellite. there are a lot of clouds. but if you look at the northwest corner of the state, all the clouds are going that way. the weather is going that way. but the smoke coming off the smith river complex fires going the other way. you can see it along the coast. it is subtle but it is there in this very narrow, confined little area that looks like it got corralled and then dragged down the coast and brought into the bay. that is in fact exactly what happened. watch
1:58 am
what happens when we change our perspective. instead of looking at the satellite we will visualize the winds from the past 24 hours. you can see this little freeway right here. a strong burst of wind along the coast which did just that. it took smoke from the smith river complex, corralled into a narrow ribbon, brought it along the coast, then you see the streamlines getting caught up and pulling the smoke into the bay. it is a complex scenario that teamed up to give us awful air quality. here is how it will change. tomorrow it is not all that different, but by saturday you are going to notice something does change. the overall flow in the atmosphere will switch and we will lose the strong northerly winds and the westerly winds will become more dominant. saturday into sunday we start clearing that smoke out. you see the plume going the other way. tomorrow you still have to deal with this for at least one more day. let's turn our attention to the next item coming our way from the pacific are the first rainmaker of
1:59 am
fall. you see it develop here on the big picture, right there, and by the time we get to sunday, now there is all of a sudden a very impressive -looking storm right off the coast. this is the first one of fall. the way this normally happens is they come in a little too far north. we don't get the bulk of this but the north bay will get some rain and we can visualize that, taking the long-range forecast. it looks really good there as we play this ahead into monday morning. by the time the southern tail end gets to us, we are just getting the very last edge of it and will really just be for the north bay. there is another one after that that falls apart before it gets here. there is another one after that that is a very good size. the pacific is waking up and it looks like an active period, but none of these look like major storms for us. the only one we get measurable rain out of is the one on monday. you know what the best part of this is? three inches of rain
2:00 am
means that the smith river complex fires going our way. after the wind takes it the other way it will get rained on and the fire will be history for the most part , maybe not completely, but at least the smoke will be done. there is the rain. that is how much we get, maybe three hundredths of an inch of rain and that is about it. so let me show you what the daytime highs look like tomorrow. let's go back to san francisco in oakland. we still have a first alert weather day because we still have the smoke and we focus on monday , with the cooldown and the chance of rain. every microclimate has the same story. first alert weather day tomorrow for the smoke and it is the north bay which has the most realistic opportunity to get that rain. santa rosa, you're not getting out of the 60s on monday. san jose, you are not even getting any raindrops. i do not see this getting far enough south to warrant the seven-day raindrops. inland east bay, you will probably get less than a 10th of an inch of rain. for the coast, this is for areas to the north, so some
2:01 am
interesting changes coming our way, sara. darren, thank you! some of the most colorful commentary during the niners game was not about the game and some fans might have some words for al michaels after this! still ahead in sports, two games in four days? no! two wins in four days! the 49ers rock this 21st night of september. the offense cook
2:04 am
downtown san francisco in the bay bridge. you ever notice that we come here and all of our aerials are 44 miles away! we like to bring in aerials from nearby here, but what are we supposed to do? >> that was harsh but we will cut michael some slack. he used to call giants games after all. and he may have a point. they're not the prettiest to look at when you fly over san jose, but city hall is maybe not the prettiest to look at! i don't know, vern. you are down
2:05 am
there now. there was definitely a pretty sight on the scoreboard tonight, i can tell you that! >> there certainly was! end to end kickoff until the final gun for the 49ers! they have got everything that the new york football giants threw at them and it still wasn't enough to stop this offensive attack tonight! let's take a look at what happened. george kittle, he knew where the cameras were! for 90 yards, tied at three. final minute of the quarter. here came nick bosa, unblocked on daniel jones! nearly a safety! always be aware of number 97! ensuing drive on third down. brock purdy, out to bell. first nfl catch, first touchdown, 10-3, 49ers! under two minutes in the half. cristian mccaffrey, straight up the gut. 12 straight game. you see him tying jerry rice for the franchise record. giants
2:06 am
rallied to start the second half down 17-6. and former 49er matt breen powers his way, cutting the lead to 17-12. but the niners answer right back. first play of the next drive, purdy, wide-open, and look! he broke four tackles on his way to a 40 yard game! led to a field goal and pushed the lead to 20-12. fourth quarter. niners put it away here. deep to deebo samuel! back shoulder strike. he had six catches for 129 yards. purdy, 310 yards and two touchdowns and san francisco won the home opener 30-12. they have won 13 straight regular-season games dating back to last season. >> we have a standard that we want to be the best versions of ourselves, so for us it is like, yeah, we won the game, which is the most important, but there is stuff out there we can clean up and be better at.
2:07 am
>> we have all these playmakers for a reason. for us to go out there and lay an egg at any moment would be a great dishonor to the front office and how much money they shelled out to us. >> i think we have to continue to play in top contention and we will be okay. >> we left a lot of meat on the bone. i think our whole offense would say that. i think kyle would say that. there will be days where our defense is not 100% spectacular and we always have to be prepared for that. so we are going to continue to get better and that is our goal. baseball, giants and dodgers. tyler fitzgerald made his major-league debut in front of his family and had his first career hit. san francisco trailed 2-1 in the sixth but did not have a hit until former dodger joc pederson collected his 15th home run for the year and tied the game! bottom of the inning, l.a. with a runner at third and one out. j.d. martinez, fly ball to shallow right. mike yastrzemski made
2:08 am
the catch but forgot the number of outs! that allowed will smith to score the go-ahead run. dodgers go on to win 7-2 as the giants now have a losing record for the first time since june fifth! what does it all mean? san francisco has now lost six of their last seven games and are three games back of the final and a wildcard spot which is nine games left in the season. so it looks like, sara, the show is just about over for the giants. the a's lost 7-2 to the tigers . but you know what we will always have, the 49ers for at least the next 15 weeks! this shapes up for a great red and gold report show live tomorrow night at 7: 30! >> we know it will be a good one, vern! thank you so
2:10 am
we have something in common that has to do with where we are from. seven california. i anchored my fair share of police chases during my time working in l.a. it was kind of expected. every now and then you see one that makes you go wow! there was one today that had a little bit of everything including an ending out of a tv show. darren has not seen this yet. lapd started chasing the driver of a stolen car on the
2:11 am
110 freeway. the driver started throwing papers and then eventually headed something off to this guy on the sidewalk. then he started speeding down a busy street , obviously dangerous, until a random guy in a truck decided hey, i'm going to do something about this, and pulled in front of the driver to box him in. the ending, though, was probably the weirdest part. the guy wiggles out of the window, loses his pants a little bit, then did a handstand and a somersault and the surrender! the cops swept in. i also heard the cops gave a handshake to the person in the truck stop to this. they say not to do that. you go by lots of titles veteran, son, dadad. -it's s time to geget up. -no. hair s stylist andnd cheerlead.
