york killing at least two. good morning, i'm shanelle kaul in for anne-marie green. we begin this morning with new fears about a government shutdown. this after house speaker kevin mccarthy failed to advance a bill to keep the government funded and open as the house went into recess. our jarred hill is tracking the latest and will tell us which places would close during a shutdown. good morning. >> reporter: yeah, eight days until a possible government shutdown, and the stalemate is really among republican house majority that can't seem to find a way forward on a few specific issues. sources tell cbs news the biden administration will begin calling the heads of government agencies today to plan for a potential october 1st shutdown. >> the resolution is not adopted. >> reporter: yesterday on capitol hill, a gop clash in the house e after theyey failed totg up a defefense fundiding bill f third titime. perhaps a preview of what's to come with just over a week for

early next week at the soonest. >> okay. lots to follow here. jarred hill in new york. thank you. ukrainian president volodymyr zelenskyy will address the canadian parliament today. this comes one day after he met with president biden in washington. the administration announced another $325 million in assistance for ukraine. our natalie brand has more. >> reporter: ukraine's president volodymyr zelenskyy made his second wartime visit to the white house. >> today i approve the next tranche of u.s. security assistance to ukraine including more artillery, more ammunition, more anti-tank weapons, and next week the first u.s. abrams tanks will be delivered to ukraine. >> reporter: it comes as president biden is pushing congress to approve an additional $24 billion in military and humanitarian aid to ukraine. >> i thank the united states of america and mr. president for the new defense package for ukraine. a very powerful package.

thank you so much. and it has exactly what our soldiers need now. >> reporter: zelenskyy spent the morning making his case on capitol hill in a series of private meetings. lawmakers say ukraine's president painted a stark picture of the situation on the ground. >> if we step away from supporting them, the russians will win this war. he was very clear about that. >> reporter: but the white house funding request is facing growing opposition from some republicans who have raised concerns about spending and accountability. >> what is it that we are trying to accomplish, and at what cost? i mean, if we're going to spend another $100 billion, for what? >> reporter: republicans who support additional funding say the u.s. cannot afford to let russia win. >> the majority of the majority support this. i know there's some dissension on both sides, but a war of attrition is not going to win this. that's what putin wants. >> reporter: even as zelenskyy was in the capitol thursday, hard right republicans again blocked a move to vote on a

pentagon spending bill. >> the resolution is not adopted. >> reporter: natalie brand, cbs news, the white house. turning to the crisis at the southern border. the number of migrants being apprehended by u.s. immigration agents is nearing record levels. cbs news has learned 140,000 migrants were apprehended in the first 20 days of september. in eagle pass, texas, nearly 6,000 migrants entered in two days, prompting authorities there to close the border crossing. the biden administration is now sending 800 active duty troops to help. there was a tragedy on a new york highway after a bus carrying a high school marching band crashed. two adults were killed, dozens of people were injured, and five are in critical condition. ali bauman has more. >> reporter: debris litters the scene along this new york interstate where a bus chartered by the farmingdale high school band landed in a ravine two

hours northwest of new york city. >> imagine the fear, the screams, and the aftermath when these high school students, many of them freshmen, were surrounded by there chaos. -- this chaos. >> reporter: the vehicle was part of a six-bus caravan of 300 people heading to a band camp in pennsylvania. dozens of first responders rushed to the scene just after 1:30 p.m., forced to use ladders to rescue victims as the bus teetered among treetops. some of the injured were pulled through windows. crews also scoured the woods to find anyone who may have been ejected. >> there were 44 passengers on the bus. 40 students and four adults. at this time, we have two confirmed fatalities, both adults and serious injuries including five critical. >> reporter: traffic was shut down for hours. tonight officials say it is unclear how the bus careened out of control. the national transportation safety board will send a team

welcome back. police chasing a robbery suspect in los angeles yesterday got a little help. a good samaritan in the gray pickup drove straight up to the suspect's car, pinning him in with police cruisers behind the suspect. he soon realized there was nowhere for him to go, so he put his hands out the window, climbed out of the vehicle, and surrendered to police. a rescued grand canyon hiker comes to the defense of his friends, and teenagers accused of killing a man riding his bike appear in court. those are some of the big headlines we're following today on the "morning newsstand." "the las vegas review journal" reports two teenagers charged in a hit-and-run death of a retired police chief riding his bicycle appeared in adult court for the first time. disturbing cell phone video shows two people in what authorities say was a stolen car appearing to intentionally hit 64-year-old andreas probst on his bike last month.

the 18 and 16-year-old boys face multiple charges including murder. they did not enter a plea. "the seattle times" says seattle public utilities is now asking about 1.5 million customers to conserve water amid a worsening drought. residents in the area are being asked to stop watering their lawns, spend less time in the shower, and only run their laundry machines and dishwashers when they're full. the utility's reservoirs hold less than 30% of their capacity. and "the arizona republic" reports a grand canyon hiker says he was actually not abandoned by his friends. 63-year-old bill formanek suffered a dislocated shoulder while hiking with a friend last week. he says he told his friend to leave him and find other friends a few miles away who had satellite devices to call for help. in a social media post, the sheriff's office said the other hikers had left him behind. he says that isn't what happened.

been packing arenas across the country. now she's trying to pack voting booths, as well. on tuesday, swift called out fans to register on national voter registration day. vote.org says more than 35,000 people registered after swift's social media post. the united auto workers strike could expand as we now approach a new deadline today. and the popular wwe smackdown is changing networks. courtney kealy has more in your morning cbs "money watch" report. >> reporter: stocks dropped again thursday in an ugly day on wall street. the dow lost 370 points. the nasdaq was down 245, and the s&p 500 lost 72 points. today is the deadline for a threatened expansion of the united auto workers strikes in the eighth day of the standoff. uaw members want to end a three-tiered wage structure that they say has resulted in a wage gap between older and younger workers.

the white house did not say whether president joe biden will visit a picket line but did say on thursday that he is pro uaw workers. florida's brightline starts running trains between miami and orlando with speeds of 125 miles per hour today. it's the first big test of the privately owned passenger rail service. brightline's owner, fortress investment group, is betting that its $5 billion investment will see about eight million people take the 3.5-hour trip annually. and the wwe smackdown is moving from fox after nbc universal's usa network pinned down the lucrative tv rights package. the five-year deal will begin next fall. the terms of the deal were undisclosed, but it's roughly valued to be about $1.4 billion. that's your cbs "money watch" report for this friday morning. i'm courtney kealy, cbs news, new york. if you have a costco mattress, listen up. about 48,000 mattresses sold at

as chair of fox and news corp. in mid-november becoming chair emeritus of both businesses. his son lachlan will take the reins. part of a long-standing succession plan. this won't be your typical retirement. in an internal memo to employees obtained by cbs news, rupert murdoch said i will be watching our broadcast with a critical eye, reading our newspapers, you can expect to see me in the office late on a friday afternoon. over the last 70 years, he amassed a vast media empire across australia, europe, and the united states, starting fox broadcasting company in 1986. and ten years later, he founded fox newschannel, providing him an influential role in conservative politics. >> i've been practicing for 40 years. and you know, a lot -- >> reporter: murdoch's career has been plagued by controversies. in 2016 he ousted his longtime ally, fox news chairman and ceo roger ailes, amid sexual harassment and abuse
