hazy skies hanging on a cross parts of the bay area. when we could finally see some clearer conditions. a coastal community looks ahead to a family-friendly event this weekend. it will be a big boost for businesses. it is technically an endangered species but see how this fox is thriving on a college campus of all places and the lessons we can learn from it. that afternoon. i'm elizabeth cook. we are seeing some improvement in our air quality this afternoon. it is a first alert weather day and the air district has extended our spare the air alert through tomorrow. this was the view earlier today in san rafael. the air still looking gray and thick but people were out and about. and alameda beach, people headed out for their morning bike rides and walks despite the smoky air. jessica burch looks at when we could

finally see some relief. we have been dealing with some very bad air quality as the wildfires to the north of us continue to sweep that smoke into our homes and communities. heading into this weekend and next week, we will start seeing an improvement but for now, we are seeing red widespread throughout the area. this is showing unhealthy air quality no matter where you live. heading into next week, by monday and tuesday, we will see improvements. keep that in mind. once we head into monday and tuesday, an area of low pressure will move in and that is when we could see a light chance of showers as early as monday night. speaking of the north bay, let's start off here. we are sitting right around average. 70s expected near santa rosa. heading down south into the golden gate bridge and past that, we are sitting in the 60s and 70s across the bay bridge into

oakland. heading down south closer to the santa clara valley, 80s and 70s. very similar set up close to the east bay. in san jose, another pedestrian has been struck and killed by a car. police blocked off the area of fruitdale avenue west of sherman oaks as they investigated the deadly crash there. you can see the damaged bumper of a white sedan and what looks like a red seated scooter overturned on the road. this is the 21st pedestrian death in san jose this year. police are investigating what led up to a deadly shooting at the car dealership in albany. they say gunmen shot and killed a woman working at the toyota berkeley servicenter then later died in a gun battle with police. officers have not said much about the victim and the suspect but witnesses believe the two did know each other. a traffic alert for south bay drivers starting at 9:00 tonight. the northbound lanes of highway 87 in san jose will

close for repaving from 280 to highway 85 . it is scheduled to reopen by 5 am on monday. this weekend, the 36th annual pacific coast fog fest returns to pacifica and people from all over the bay area can enjoy live music, vendors and activities for the entire family. the event also raises money for several nonprofits. shawn chitnis got a preview of the festival and a look at the impact it has on small businesses. >> paige miller opened up the magic toybox back in pacifica in 2021. plans for the shop started before the pandemic but many of the twists and turns that come with owning a new business have been shaped by covid-19. still, he has never strayed away from the mission that keeps them going each day. >> i miss the nostalgia and the magic feeling of being able to go to a toy store or a place that was meant for kids or a

place where kids could walk around and see and touch. >> a mix of toys new and old, paige loves having a variety of options for boys and girls of all ages. >> the toys that you had as a kid, the kids will love them just the same. >> parents enjoy seeing the toys they loved available for their children or adults. many of his customers are buying gifts for themselves. >> one of the things i told my customers is kids don't change. >> early into his run as a small business owner, paige is helping step up to help organize this year's fog fest is vice president of the board. >> being involved in fog fest was very important to me because it really is pacifica 's biggest community event. >> not only does it generate a lot of sales for him, rivaling what makes during a weekend in december for the holiday shopping season, it also matters more now that he has a family. paige's wife grew up here and they're raising a son together. >> i want to make sure fog fest keeps happening and i want to make sure that it is positive for everybody.

>> keeping up a proud tradition in pacifica while helping parents and children create new memories together. >> this is how kids learn. if you want to be involved with your kids, play with them. that is the biggest thing. >> fog fest is this saturday and sunday in pacifica along palmetto avenue. it starts at 10 am and ends at 6:00 p.m. we often talk about climate change and how it affects our surroundings. in our latest project earth report, we focus on how it is threatening our planet's biodiversity. one report reveals up to 1 million species may face extinction and a stanford study warns it is even worse than that. entire groups of animals a completely vanishing. as anne makovec shows us, here in california, a small endangered fox is teaching us all a lesson in perseverance. >> early in the morning as the sun rises at cal state

university bakersfield, it is pretty quiet. just a few folks out walking. when night falls, it gets a little wild. researchers puncture a can of cat food, securing it to the ground. overnight, a camera records the action. the skunks and opossums are no big surprise but these guys are, the san joaquin kit fox. they are an endangered species. >> we were all very surprised to see kit foxes doing so well. >> state biologists say the number has declined in part due to habitat loss and now climate change threatens them even more. as you can see on this recent video, the foxes are multiplying like crazy. >> it seems like they like school campuses. >> for better or for worse, csub, our campus, seems to be a little kit fox factory.

>> dr. lucas hall is a conservation biologist at the university. the scientist and his team made an eye opening discovery. the kit fox is sharing borough space with other wild animals including one of their favorite foods, the california ground squirrel. >> it is kind of surprising when you think that here on campus, we have ground squirrels that we have evidence using kit fox burroughs. there are cats that are using those boroughs, opossums, raccoons, skunks. it is crazy cool. >> this crazy cool roommate situation has created an unusual dilemma. the number of squirrels has exploded and they're ripping up the landscape. the ground staff decided to fumigate what they thought were squirrel dens. the plan left some students fuming. >> they did not really know which were squirrel dens or kit fox dens. >> we are the only university that has endangered san joaquin kit fox when i live on a. >> biology students are

charter members of the san joaquin kit fox society. on campus, the society has gathered nearly 2000 signatures to stop the fumigation. the university has since discontinued the program and proclaimed its unwavering support for the endangered fox. >> it is exciting. it is not doom and gloom. we could really do a lot. >> biodiversity is one of the greatest weapons to fight the impassive climate change. the campus is now home to 70 kit fox dens with 37 foxes at last count. >> there is hope that if we do the right thing now and we work together, we can make a difference. >> dr. hall is inspired to see the next generation get involved. >> the decisions we make now are not decisions we have to live with. they are not decisions -- >> we all try to outfox the impassive a warming planet. >> they are pretty cute. >> the university is forming an ecosystem counsel to bolster

let's get back to our first alert weather day. some signs of improvement in our skies but the smoke and haze hanging over parts of the bay area today. here is meteorologist jessica burch. >> we have been dealing with some of the worst air quality we have seen all season long. the wildfires to the north of us are burning right now and that smoke is settling into our local communities. we are sitting in the moderate to unhealthy category, widespread throughout the bay area. heading into this weekend, we will see a lot of improvements have the smoke moves into the east. watch that gray sweep away as we head into next week. monday, forget about it. we are right back to normal. there is a lot going on outdoors so get prepared if you are planning on getting out and getting some fresh air. we are expecting 60s in the forecast for us for
