through space to retrieve an asteroid sample comes to an end. what scientists are hoping the rock will reveal. hey, good morning, i'm shanelle kaul in for anne-marie green. we start this morning with some breaking news overnight. the writers guild of america announced late last night that it reached a tentative deal with the major studios. after almost five months of striking, hollywood writers are set to get off the picket lines. however, members of the union are not authorized to return to work just yet. cbs news correspondent wendy gillette has more on the agreement. good morning, wendy. >> reporter: good morning. this tentative deal is a three-year contract. the writers guild has suspended picketing as members wait to vote on the agreement. after more than 4.5 months on the picket line, finally a breakthrough between hollywood writers and the major studios. last night the writers guild of america sent a message to its

members announcing a tentative deal toward a new contract. >> i would like to go back to work. i really do hope it's over. >> reporter: the deal comes after five straight days of talks between the union and studio representatives over several sticking points including the regulation of artificial intelligence, staffing minimums for writers rooms, and the distribution of residuals. in last night's message to members, the wga said the tentative deal is, quote, exceptional, with meaningful gains and protections for writers in every sector of the membership. >> what we've really learned from this entire 140 some odd days is just like how powerful we are together. >> reporter: the terms of the deal were not immediately made public, and it must still be ratified by the wga's approximately 11,000 members. but hollywood insiders are hopeful this deal could put tinseltown on the fast track to getting production back under way. >> if writers rooms get back by october, then production is feasible by january. of course this is entirely dependent on whether the

s.a.g.-aftra strike gets resolved. >> reporter: the hollywood actors union, s.a.g.-aftra, began its strike on july 14th, marking the first time the two unions have been on strike at the same time since 1960. the writers guild is now encouraging members to join actors on their picket lines. 90% of union members approved the deal that ended the last writers guild strike in 2008. >> wendy gillette in new york for us. thanks, wendy. president biden is set to visit michigan tomorrow to show his support for striking autoworkers. his trip comes as the uaw union expanded the strike to dozens of factories across 20 states. the uaw's president says ford won't be affected by the setting radio -- the expansion setting progress in those negotiations. former president donald trump also announced that he's planning to visit union members in michigan on wednesday. the uaw's targeted strikes against general motors, ford,

and jeep maker stellantis is now in its 11th day. and the clock is ticking on a possible government shutdown. house republicans are scrambling to find a path forward on a series of appropriations bills. some hard-line conservatives want to use it for deep spending cuts. in the event of a shutdown, millions face delayed paychecks, and some federal offices will have to close or face short owned hours. -- shortened hours. government funding spires sunday. embattled new jersey senator bob menendez is set to hold his first news conference today since his indictment. the senator and his wife were both indicted by a grand jury last week on three counts of conspiracy to commit bribery, extortion, and fraud. there are now growing calls from his fellow democrats for menendez to step down. menendez denies any wrongdoing. this, by the way, is his second indictment in ten years. the mayor of el paso, texas, says his city has seen as many

as 2,000 migrants arrive in just one day. now mexico says it reached a new agreement with the u.s. to deport migrants from its northern cities to stem this sharp rise. our manuel bojorquez has more. >> reporter: in eagle pass, texas, men, women, and children arrived by the hundreds. thank god we're here, says this man from venezuela. but mayor rolando salinas says his community is overwhelmed. >> it is not normal. the people here are frustrated. >> reporter: el paso's mayor expected another 2,000 migrants. >> the city of el paso only has so many resources, and we have come to what we look at a breaking point now. >> reporter: republican congressman tony gonzalez of texas blamed the biden administration for the crisis. >> this border crisis is as if a category-four hurricane has hit. we're trying to keep our head above water. >> reporter: homeland security secretary alejandro mayorkas who visited the border saturday blamed inaction in congress. >> our immigration system is

absolutely broken. a fact on which everyone agrees. and congress needs to fix it. >> reporter: at the root of it all is a mass displacement of people due to political and economic crises. more than seven million venezuelans have left their homeland in recent years, many heading to central and north america. that presents a unique challenge, says ruben garcia, who runs an el paso shelter. >> we do not have diplomatic relations between the united states and venezuela, and so you cannot remove, deport venezuelans back to venezuela. >> that was manuel bojorquez reporting for us. the remnants of tropical storm ophelia are still hitting the east coast this morning, bringing wet weather and potential flooding. the system has now weakened after making landfall saturday. as astrid martinez reports, the storm brought heavy destruction.

>> reporter: tens of thousands of people along the east coast are still without power after dealing with 24 hours of destructive winds, heavy rain, and severe flooding. in virginia, a state of emergency was declared. in north carolina, roads were submerged, more than 40 car accidents reported in raleigh, the most serious when a tree fell on this car. the driver crushed, now hospitalized with a head injury. in greenville, a small pit bull terrier found tied to a fence was rescued just in time from rising waters. another dramatic rescue in cape lookout. a helicopter lighting the way for the coast guard to rescue five people including three children stranded on a 38-foot catamaran. parts of maryland seeing extended periods of heavy rainfall and elevated tides. ocean city residents worried about what's next. >> i'm looking at the radar on my phone, and there's some heavy showers moving in. >> that was astrid martinez. after a seven-year journey,

a capsule carrying nasa's first asteroid samples landed in the utah desert sunday morning. cbs news' skyler henry has more. milestone, we have confirmed parachute deployment. >> reporter: in a fly-by of earth, the osiris-rex spacecraft released the capsule containing asteroid fragments from 63,000 miles out. >> touched down. >> reporter: the saucer-shaped capsule holding possible clues about the birth of the solar system slammed into earth's atmosphere and touched down in the utah desert. sunday's landing wraps up a seven-year, four billion-mile voyage to transport the sample from an asteroid called bennu here to planet earth. nasa officials spoke about the successful mission. >> it was pulse pounding, i'm sure for you watching it. even more for those of us in the helicopters. we were with bated breath making sure that we came down for a nice, soft landing in the utah desert.

and it worked. and it worked spectacularly well. >> reporter: the capsule holding the precious cargo was moved to a temporary clean room at the utah test and training range. >> we're hoping that we'll see organics, we'll see amino acids, building blocks of life, as well as evidence for past water on bennu because all of these things are the sorts of materials that asteroids and comets delivered to the earth when it was forming and helped life to be able to flourish. >> reporter: meanwhile the mother ship, osiris-rex, set off after another asteroid. >> because they are pristine examples of planetary building blocks, we want to study them because they're going to tell us a lot about how the earth and all of the planets in our solar system was formed. >> reporter: it's likely the 4.5-year-old billion pieces were free of contamination, making them perfect specimens to study. skyler henry, cbs news, washington. coming up, bus crash update. a school official now has some good news about those students involved in last week's crash.

police in plant city about 25 miles east of tampa say the victims were hit on saturday night at a railroad crossing marked only by a stop sign. a seventh passenger is now in hospital in critical condition. investigators say they believe a couple was taking their three children and two of their friends to a birthday party when this tragic accident occurred. "the arizona republic" says a woman is facing more than 100 charges after police seized dozens of dogs from her home. police in chandler, just southwest of phoenix, say more than 50 dogs with special needs were rescued on friday night, and many of them needed immediate medical attention. five other dogs were found dead. the local humane society is now caring for those rescued animals. the woman is charged with 55 counts of animal abuse and 55 counts of animal cruelty. the "associated press" is reporting that all of the students who were involved and injured in that bus crash in new york are expected to recover.
