guest at their picnic in the park. good morning, and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. the clock on congress is ticking down as a potential government shutdown is days away. if lawmakers are unable to make a deal, federal funding will expire on october 1st. that would mean close national parks, delayed paychecks for millions of workers, and more. cbs' jarred hill has the latest on the dual strategies there y -- dual strategies from the house republicans and the democrat-controlled senate. good morning. >> reporter: hey, we got some progress on capitol hill, but not a lot of hope. you see, both strategies in the house and the senate have fundamental issues that could lead to a full or partial government shutdown as soon as this weekend. short-lived celebration among some house republicans yesterday voting to move four spending bills one step further in the race to avoid a shutdown. >> whether they pass or not i don't know. whether we end up shutting down, time will tell.
4:32 am
>> reporter: time is running out with government funding set to dry up by the end of the week. the four house gop bills which fund the departments of defense, homeland security, state, and agriculture contain deep spending cuts republicans have been pushing for but aren't expected to get past the democrat-controlled senate. >> i want to keep the government open. i want to do the job. >> reporter: yesterday the senate overwhelmingly voted to bring up its own bipartisan short-term spending bill known as a continuing resolution. >> this shows we can work together even with our differerences for r the betteret ofof the countntry. >> reporter: that measure would keep government funded through november and includes millions toward disaster relief and ukraine aid, a non-starter for hard-right house conservatives. >> we cannot continue to have continuing resolutions passing off of a republican house floor with democrat votes to advance the biden policies. >> reporter: florida congressman matt gaetz and others have threatened to oust speaker

mcmccarthy from leadership if he reaches across the aisle to avoid a shutdown. thousands of government workers face furloughs while others would be forced to work without pay if congress doesn't act. now last night speaker mccarthy said he's not worried about keeping his position. meanwhile, the white house is calling on house republicans to, quote, stop playing political games with people's lives. >> indeed. we're all going to be watching capitol hill. jarred hill in new york, thank you. president biden made a historic trip to michigan tuesday to walk the picket line with members of the uaw in their strike against detroit's big three automakers. as robert costa reports, the president told workers to stick with it on day 12 of the walkout. >> wearing a union ball cap and armed with a bullhorn president biden told the united auto workers to keep fighting for higher wages. >> it's a fact, let's keep

of the 2024 race. is the labor vote up for grabs? >> i would say you have to earn it. >> reporter: trump is skipping wednesday's primary debate in california and will make a primetime address to workers at a nonunion facility outside detroit. it's unclear if he'll visit a picket line. >> trump's coming wednesday. >> yeah, he can go over to mccomb county. the red neck county. >> reporter: you don't want him here? >> no. >> i'm glad he's coming, it's going to show he's supporting the uaw and the cause. >> that was robert costa reporting. as of this morning, the nearly five-month-long writers strike is over. writers guild board members approved a new three-year contract agreement with studios and streaming services yesterday. it means writers will return to work today. members have until october 9th to vote on whether to ratify the contract. the deal includes a 12.5% minimum pay increase over the length of the contract, increased streaming residuals, and protections against the use of artificial intelligence. late-night talk shows are likely to be the first shows to resume

production. meanwhile, the actors strike continues with no further negotiations planned. in new york, a judge ruled that donald trump and the trump organization committed fraud for years. the ruling says the former president inflated the value of his assets by billions of dollars and lied about his net worth on financial statements. it could prevent trump from conducting business in the state. afterwards, he called the ruling un-american and part of an ongoing plot to damage his presidential campaign. scott macfarlane has more. >> reporter: a judge has found donald trump engaged in fraud, overinflating the worth of his real estate holdings and misleading banks and insurers. the ruling comes days before the trump organization is to stand trial in a civil case alleging years of fraud and misconduct brought by new york attorney general letitia james last year. >> claiming you have money that you do not have does not amount to the art of the deal. it's the art of the steal.
4:37 am
>> reporter: in the ruling the judge found trump and top executives at the trump organization lied about his assets in order to secure favorable loans and lower insurance premiums. in one instance claiming his 10,000 square-foot apartment was roughly 30,000 square feet. the judge summarizing trump's approach to bookkeeping, this is a fantasy world, not the real world. the lawsuit from attorney general james seeks a quarter of a billion dollars. >> there cannot be different rules for different people in this country or in this state. former presidents are no different. >> reporter: when trump was deposed in the case in august of last year, he pleaded the fifth and then repeated it more than 400 times. >> is that correct? >> same answer. >> reporter: trump has repeatedly denied wrongdoing and lashed out at james for bringing the suit. >> this raging maniac campaigned for office ranting and raving about her goal -- her only goal is we've got to get trump, we're going to get him. she knew nothing about me. i never heard of her. >> that was scott macfarlane
