out from each other as the person who refused to show up, former president trump continues to dominate in the polls. at the second primary debate, seven potential hopefuls took aim at president biden on a range of key issues like the autoworkers strike, immigration, and the economy. >> this strike is a joe biden speed. >> joe biden should not not on the picket line. he should be on the southern border. >> bidenomics has failed. wages are not keeping up with inflation. >> reporter: several times candidates on stage clashed with each other. former u.n. ambassador nikki haley and businessman vivek ramaswamy going toe to toe over tiktok. >> part of how we win elections is reaching the next generation of young americans -- >> tiktok is one of the most dangerous social media apps that we could have. and what you've got -- every time i hear you i feel a little bit dumber for what you say. >> reporter: multiple candidates stepped up attacks on former president trump who skipped the debate to campaign in michigan. >> donald trump is missing in action.

>> you're afraid of being on this stage and defending your record. you're ducking these things. you keep doing that, no one is is going to call you donald trump anymore, we're going to call you donald duck. >> reporter: trump still holds a commanding lead in the polls for the first gop contest in the state of iowa. >> with me as your president, our opponents will lose, and our american workers will be the biggest winner of them all. >> reporter: a spokesman for the former president says he plans to skip the next gop debate, as well. next gop debate is scheduled for november which is not too long before the iowa caucuses in january. that's the first contest really of this 2024 election cycle. trump's campaign, though, says that they shouldn't have the debate with as far ahead in the polls as he is now. >> of course. jarred hill in new york, thank you. senator bob menendez and his wife pleaded not guilty in federal court yesterday. the couple's accused of accepting hundreds of thousands in bribes. nikole killion reports.

>> reporter: new jersey senator robert menendez arrived in federal court hand in hand with his wife nadine. the couple were in the same row as they were arraigned and pleaded not guilty to three felony charges including conspiracy to commit bribery, fraud, and extortion. the senator responded, yes, your honor, when asked if he understood the charges against him and was ordered to surrender his personal passport. >> can you continue to serve effectively in the senate, sir? >> reporter: according to the indictment, menendez and his wife allegedly accepted bribes in the form of nearly $500,000 in cash found in pockets of a coat bearing his name, over $100,000 in gold bars, and a $60,000 mercedes convertible, in exchange for his efforts to direct federal aid and weapons sales to egypt. he's also accused of enriching a trio of business partners who also pleaded not guilty. >> i'm innocent. >> reporter: cbs news has learned the fbi is investigating

whether egypt's intelligence services tried to gain access to the senator through his wife. more than half of the senate democratic caucus has called on the new jersey democrat to resign, including the state's junior senator, cory booker. majority leader chuck schumer reserved judgment. >> for senators there's a much higher standard, and clearly when you read the indictment, senator menendez fell way, way below that started. -- that standard. >> reporter: senator menendez plans to address senate democrats at a lunch thursday at the capitol. meantime, he cannot speak about -- with his congressional staff or political advisers who have knowledge of the case. his next court hearing is set for monday. nikole killion, cbs news, new york. the house of representatives is debating four of the 12 appropriations bills needed to fund the government. it's likely their work will not be done in time to avoid a government shutdown. skyler henry has more from capitol hill. >> reporter: house speaker kevin mccarthy says he needs more time to pass the 12 spending bills

needed to fund the government, so he's push for a short-term continuing resolution that would temporarily avoid a government shutdown. >> we will pass a continuing resolution to bring that rule up hopefully on friday. >> reporter: some hard-line republicans say they will oppose any cr, even if it means a government shutdown. >> i'm a no, and will remain a no. my advice is buckle up, there's turbulence ahead. >> reporter: speaker mccarthy tried to sweeten the short-term bill by including republican priorities such as deep spending cuts and tougher border policies, but those additions make it almost impossible to pass in the senate. the senate is working on its own continuing resolution which has broad bipartisan support to keep the government open for the next six weeks at current spending levels. >> we can shut the government down in exchange for a zero meaningful progress on policy. >> reporter: president biden is warning that a shutdown would impct all americans. >> a lot of vital work in

science and health could be impacted. from cancer research to food safety. so the american people need our republican friends in the house of representatives to do their job. fund the government. >> reporter: the president says he does not believe a shutdown is inevitable, but added that he didn't know how to avoid it either. skyler henry, cbs news, capitol hill. there was another frightening discovery inside a new york city day care. authorities say they found 3d printers and ghost guns including a printed assault rifle inside an unlocked room in a harlem day care. an 18-year-old and two minors were arrested. charges include illegal firearms possession. police said the 18-year-old's mother owned and ran the day care. officials would not say if she will face charges. and businesses throughout philadelphia are beefing up security after a mob of people ransacked stores tuesday night. a large group of up to 100 looters broke into stores, stole

merchandise, and vandalized property in a coordinated attack. police say at least 52 people were arrested after they stormed dozens of stores across several neighborhoods. all 48 state-run liquor stores were closed in philadelphia yesterday after at least 18 were broken into on tuesday. and an american soldier detained in north korea after crossing into the country is headed back home to the u.s. army private travis king was part of a civilian tour group in july when he suddenly ran across the border. yesterday north korea said that he was being deported. he was released into u.s. custody with the help of sweden and china. the biden administration says no concessions were made to north korea. king's fate is uncertain after being declared awol by the u.s. government. michigan state has officially fired head football coach mel tucker. it comes after he was suspended earlier this month following claims from a sexual assault awareness speaker that he

building in the world. it's been beaming spectacular images on its outside since july. the venue will host live music, film, and sportsing events. -- sporting events. youtube kicks things off tomorrow with a concert. the first of 25 dates the band will play there this year. fox news baltimore says a suspect was arrested in the murder of tech ceo pava lapere. jason billingsley was taken into custody last night. lapere's body was discovered monday in her apartment complex after she was reported missing. she founded the tech startup ecomap technologies and was named to "forbes" 30 under 30 list for social impact earlier there year. police say billingsley, who was paroled last year in an earlier sexual assault case, is also a suspect in a rape, attempted murder, and arson last week. and "the daily beast" says a montana judge temporarily blocked the state's ban on gender-affirming care for transgender minors. yesterday's decision comes four days before the law would have gone into effect.
