from cbs news bay area, this is the afternoon edition. a worker killed in a trench collapse in san francisco. firefighters say that worker was trapped under 8 feet of dirt and concrete and it took them more than two hours just to reach the victim. our lauren toms was one of the first reporters on scene and joins us now with the latest. >> reporter: a tragedy today here in this neighborhood. we can confirm that one person has died as a result of their injury related to this trench collapse. five other workers did make it out but we understand they were working as part of a private company contract bid by the department of public works. first responders have been here since just after 10:00 a.m. and one of the first rescue workers was named kathy. she was used to

confirm there was a human stuck down and that trench just below oak street and gave some insight into their state at the time. >> having these kinds of dogs on board with the department, the rescue time cuts down that much. we are able to know there is someone still alive and work faster or if it is a rescue, everything else will take longer. >> because of a different story i was working on about that search and rescue dog kathy, i was on the scene, among the first responders during this effort. >> reporter: they claim the soil here is really fragile under the streets. it is like sand. they worked tirelessly to support that trench with wood and plywood and beams to secure up that trench to make sure that first responders could get down safely and retrieve the

person but just last hour, mayor london breed arrived on scene where she expressed her support for the first responders and all of those who are still working on securing the scene behind me. >> when i was told that there was someone trapped inside, i immediately wanted to come here to see what was going on and to offer my support to our fire department, our police department, our department of public works and all of the various city agencies who are out here doing what they can. >> reporter: the victim has since been recovered and was taken away by the medical examiner. this is a very heavily trafficked area here on oak and divisadero. potentially one of the causes of the collapse . authorities are cautioning everyone to avoid this area today during their commute. this is one of the

main feeders to octavia to take people from the city down to 101 but, authorities, nonetheless, are advising people to stay away from the scene. if you must come to this area for your commute or any other reason, authorities are asking and telling you to expect delays today. >> we do know that you were working with the fire department on another story as this was breaking. tell us about the vantage point that you had during this recovery operation. >> reporter: because of that story, i was on the scene on the other side of this yellow tape here . media is asked to stay on this side of the tape but i was right there in the middle of it, of course, staying out of everyone's way. as soon as first responders realized that this was going from a search and rescue effort to a recovery effort, the mood very quickly shifted. people slow down their pace a little bit and took a minute to realize what just happened. i

howard . are chopper shows a police car crashed into a white van. this all happened around noon and we are working to get more information about this incident. now to the east bay where tenants are teaming up to demand better protections. anne makovec has more on the rally in concord. >> the median price for rent there has gone up more than 68% over the past 10 years and the people at this rally say hundreds of people are at risk from losing their homes. >> somebody's greed is showing and it has been going on for too long. >> this group brought 1000 signatures demanding stronger tenant protection. they want a limit on rent hikes, capping them at 3% or 60% of the consumer price index, depending on which figure is lower. they are pushing for the adoption of just cause eviction protection. they say greedy landlords are ruining their community.

>> they buy up local property here. they jack up the rent. they baked tenants and then they don't have to witness when children are uprooted from their schools, families are driven to homelessness and whole communities are torn apart. >> the city council is reviewing several proposals set to be voted on before the end of the year. to san jose now where a new report outlining tourist spending shows the city has not recovered to pre-pandemic levels. according to team hannah a, visitor spending in 2022 was at 82.6% than what it was . there are a few reasons why. the vice president at team san jose told the city's community and economic development committee, quote, for many years we were positioning ourselves as part of the bay area or maybe the part of the bay area. much of the national focus for the bay area is negative now but there is much more. our jocelyn moran

spoke to businesses and tourists in san jose. >> i did not get to see that much of it. >> micah and tobias are visiting san jose for conference relating to data streaming. while they did not get to explore much, they did walk around. >> there was not much in my site. >> pre-pandemic, most of our conventions were large tech groups coming in. a lot of those conventions have ceased to exist. >> pacheco's is a restaurant in the city center. during the week is where conferences help out. >> it is in lunchtime. it is a lot better in the nighttime as well. it helps a lot.

>> that is the same case for guilt house, and nearby place for video games and also an area where you can hold the fence at. >> we like conventions a lot, especially gaming and anime and tech conventions. those kind of events, we will have a full house every day. >> nothing stop them from coming and they enjoy their stay. >> weather is much better than in germany at the moment. there was not enough time to look around more. >> would you come back? >> absolutely. >> we did ask about if reports on crime kept them from coming and they said no. t sj also told us of the reasons why the city was coming to pre-pandemic levels and includes a lack of travel.

>> our wildfire season has been unusually mild. structure cal fire will pull two of its firefighter helicopters from the napa area. cal fire contracts these each year and they can carry each up to 2800 gallons of water to fight wildfires. >> between the two aircrafts, they responded to 100 to wildfires. overall, this summer, if you look at number wise, the number of wildfires that we have had our down to historical averages. >> even though the tankers are leaving, cal fire says they are at peak staffing levels and are more prepared to protect the community if a wildfire does break out. a pay bump coming from california's fast food workers. a new state law is meant to improve their employment experience. giving one bay area community a stronger voice. meet an interpreter who is building bridges.

governor newsom signed a new act into law. that bill raises the minimum wage to $20 for our starting next april. it also creates a new fast food industry council that can set annual pay increases beginning in 2025. the council can also establish industry standards like ours and workplace conditions for change with more than 60 locations. hispanic heritage month is an opportunity to celebrate so many diverse voices and today, we are highlighting voices from our guatemalan community.

another very nice day. thursday daytime highs, a couple of degrees warmer than wednesday was. we need to look ahead to the weekend which is still the primary focus in the forecast. there is still a chance of rain heading our way. when we look at the satellite on the big picture, we don't quite see the system coming our way. watch the pink in the clouds. that is it. futurecast can see the next system, brings it our way. by the time we have gotten to tomorrow night, that system is sitting right off the coast. when we take this a step further, you can see a few showers pulled into the will they. this is not a widespread, steady rain but watch the band skirt the bay on the east side. the models have gone back and forth on placement and timing but the general idea is the same. a 30% chance we will see

some rain on saturday, targeted more so for the afternoon and evening but that timing might shift as well. if we look at the totals, they are not big but you can see with the rainfall amounts look like. here is thursday with plenty of sunshine out there today. daytime highs will climb back into the mid-80s. we saw this a moment ago. just to review it with more detail , right on the mark for average for this time of year, maybe even a degree or two above in the south bay. should be about 80 in san jose. you made clips that by a couple of degrees. temperatures will be well into the mid-80s and nearing 90 even. we will start out with the microclimate for the inland valleys first. thursday and friday, we start a little bit of a cooldown for friday but, by saturday, we

have a chance for rain and we get cooler. should not linger into sunday. i don't have any rain in the forecast on sunday. you may even be approaching 90 degrees for our warmer inland spots by the time we get to where the middle of next week. we will do this for our microclimate that includes the bay and you can see temperatures following the same trend and that chance of light rain coming over the weekend on saturday. still ahead, it was all in good fun in the 49ers locker room. we asked who is most likely to date a popstar.
