opened the door for a record number of women to serve in public office of eight in declining health for most of the year but was so dedicated to public service, she cast her last vote, just hours before she died and her d.c. home. our juliette goodrich on capitol hill with a look back at an amazing political career, defined by smashing barriers, leading in times of tragedy and chaos, and reaching across the aisle. -- >> reporter: here we are inside of the nation's capitol and i can tell you today, there were so many conversations about late senator dianne feinstein as they all learned the news, let's take a look back at what she did, starting in san francisco. -- >> the year, 1969, location, lombard street, here, a young well-dressed announced she was running for office for the very

first time. >> what you think new people can do that the old ones haven't? >> i don't think the board has really done their homework when it comes to taxation. >> and upset victory, dianne feinstein would go on to win a seat on the san francisco board of supervisors where she would serve for nine years. she would become the boards first female president. >> did you ever in your life wish you were born? >> no. >> feinstein always thought that women deserve to see that the table but realized the odds were stacked against them. >> if she marries, the pressure is still continues to be enormous, if she's in the job market, she's generally living on a limited income, and sometimes doing work that is difficult to see the future in. >> reporter: but dianne feinstein did see a future. >> i have asked you here to tell you that i'm announcing my candidacy for mayor of the city and county of san francisco. >> reporter: she ran

unsuccessfully for mayor in 1971 and then again in 1975 on a familiar platform. >> san francisco is a city for people to live in. and people have been leaving. it is a city for people to work in. it is a city that has to have a strong economy. and all of these interests have to be considered. >> reporter: then, in 1978, the day of infamy that shook the city to its core. >> both, mayor must donate, and supervisor harvey milk have been shot and killed. >> reporter: the assassinations of the mayor and the city supervisor harvey by former supervisor dan white, as board president, dianne feinstein became the first female mayor of san francisco. >> it's going to throw into scrutiny, the whole criminal justice system. >> reporter: a year later, white was convicted of manslaughter and got a sentence, a peaceful march to

city hall turned into a violent riot. >> we are going to stick the microphones in for the verdict on what is the city right now. >> reporter: during this difficult time, mayor dianne feinstein earned a lot of respect and support. >> we will do everything we possibly can to see that those circumstances don't happen again. and that today is observed as a day of memorial and a day of rededication. and a day where once again, as the city sweeps up the class, and puts itself back together again. we can begin to think and plan for the future. it is enormously meaningful. >> reporter: she would serve as mayor until 1988. >> i am very personal about the city. i was born here and raised here and i've lived here for 50 years. i adore the city and i want it to shine brilliantly. >> reporter: more than 50 years, always a san franciscan. >> so many people sharing comments about her being a

trailblazer and breaking glass ceilings but more importantly, they are saying that she was a friend. >> as the longest serving woman in the senate and the oldest senator, she racked up a long list of accomplishments. dianne feinstein helped pass a 1994 ban on assault rifles and as just mentioned, she was also a fierce fighter for gay rights and helped guide san francisco through the a.i.d.s. crisis of the 80s, and the senate hold a memory of silence and her seat was draped with a black cloth and decorated with a bowl of white roses. now all eyes on governor gavin newsom was under pressure to quickly fill the seat, especially with the democrats fragile senate majority. newsom said he would appoint a black woman but not barbara lee of oakland, since she is running for dianne feinstein's senate seat, lee is trailing her two opponents, representative katie porter and adam schiff. now dianne feinstein sat on the senate

you can see, now earlier today, i spoke with a woman who worked as a san francisco supervisor beginning in the late 1970s. -- this was a pivotal moment in senator dianne feinstein's career, and then san francisco president of the board of supervisors she held a press conference following the killing of the mayor and supervisor harvey milk, sitting next to her was supervisor carol ruth silver. a civil rights activist who was 84 years old. >> diane was always elegant, and charming, and graceful. and the most together person that you could possibly imagine. and you have to remember, that she was breaking glass ceilings, even before i was doing so. she became a supervisor at a time when people said oh, girls

don't get to be supervisors. >> reporter: silver served three terms as the san francisco supervisor after being elected with harvey milk in 1977. the assassinations, the following year, led dianne feinstein to become the first woman mayor in the city. >> she was at all times ready for whatever had happened, and was going to happen and that she was able to debate , and to argue and at the same time, to be respectful. >> reporter: carol ruth said that when she learned of dianne feinstein's death, she knew that she was at the end of her ability to function as a public official. >> dianne's legacy within san francisco is not 100% progressive. but at the same time -- i as a progressive, and harvey as a progressive would point out, that her

great skill was as a negotiator. and her ability to compromise. >> reporter: for example, silver said that dianne feinstein was personally responsible for getting permits and opportunities are a number of large buildings to be built in an efficient and speedy manner. she said the senator broke ranks without any prior ties, within d.c. >> there was not someone who had a political history and whose parents had been involved in politics and et cetera. she didn't even have money to start out with. she was just a nice young woman, who was just very smart. coming up later, we look back on a surprise u2 concert and what bono did afterwards that was the last thing that dianne feinstein wanted. tonight on the clock running out in washington as an government shutdown seems all

thought she did. she thought she was making a run for it. meanwhile back in the bay area, it was so overcast today and we actually have rain in the forecast. it is starting to feel a little bit more like fall. at least for a moment. >> there will be an autumn field to the air on saturday but don't get too used to it, the warm-up will kick in on sunday and will be flat-out hot by the end of next week. here is a look at the first alert doppler. and a few showers making their way in, and a few more lurking off the coast, and a couple of showers trying to approach the coast. and we will see more activity as we head to the rest of tonight. zooming out a little bit, you can see thunderstorms on going to the north of sacramento. that activity just missing us with some downpours but we will see some light often on showers as we had through tonight. it will be intermittent and we will see the focus will be for the southern half of the bay area. but another band of showers develops to the north and across the bay area, the timing is flexible, this particular forecast shows the best chance of showers around 11:00 a.m. and it could be a couple hours earlier or later.

it is not a terribly organized storm system and that will pin down the timing, just be flexible with any outdoor plans it will not rain everywhere all the time. not a washout but the intermittent shower pattern and then we dry out. and we clear out on sunday and temperatures start the climatic line that isn't going to end until thursday and friday of next week. take a look at how much rain we expect and we will start with the northern half of the bay area and is forecast model shows just over a quarter of an inch of rain for this particular storm system more reasonable expectation would be if you get anything at all. a few hundredths of an inch of rain. that is with the same forecast is painting for the southern half of the bay area with the clouds overhead it will be putting a dent in the solar electricity that is being generated but we will make up for lost time beginning on sunday as we return to the full sunshine and the time for the 49ers game as well. around 70 degrees for kickoff against the cardinals at 1:25, into the low

70s for high temperatures on sunday. it will be similar to what we had today but the high temperatures will be way below normal. especially england only around 70 degrees in the santa clara valley. these inland temperatures are a good 10 to 15 degrees below normal. upper 60s around, 70 at upper 60s around the south end of the bay. and only low 60s around the coast. a couple of the warmer spots actually going to be in the north bay where the showers dropping north to south will be a little bit sunshine through. and allow temperatures to maybe crack 70 degrees but maybe just a degree or two. that is substantially below normal for this time of year. what's take a look at the seven-day forecast and we will take a look at the inland forecast. way below normal tomorrow, and we will start to climb and we end up with a mix of upper 80s and low 90s for the latter half of next week.

it will actually be hot inland for the tail end of the first full week of october. temperatures around the bay on a similar trend. i think even in san francisco we will get up to 80 degrees wednesday, thursday and friday. the pictures will not be that warm around the coast but you are in for a warming trend as well. you will see plenty of sunshine, tuesday, wednesday and thursday before the clouds return on friday. look at those temperatures four days in a row. along the coast. probably the warmest wretch of weather we have seen so far this year. >> going to enjoy. it is no secret that senator dianne feinstein the lot for san francisco but should could she have been responsible for the catch?

dianne feinstein made a splash in just about every stage of her career. like in 1978, check this out, when she followed through on her promise to wear a bathing suit to cut the ribbon at pier 39, the project she helped secure turned 45 next month. can you imagine? showing up to a public event in nothing but a bathing suit. i give her credit. >> that is pretty brave. >> good for her. we have some news in the sports world. once named the national league of the year, the giants made the move to fire gabe kapler. this after the team has gone 8-17, and some players started demanding changes. named the interim manager and place of kepler for the final three games of the season, the third inning, the giants down by two, and a

we haven't been with our club. to the nfl, help at the wide receiver position is a big concern for the 49ers. dejuan jennings is doubtful and questionable for sunday's game against the cardinals, brandon aiyuk is good to go after missing last game. the 49ers defense will be tasked with stopping the cardinals qb. he is sent to start in place of an injured tyler murray, a dual threat qb, rushing for more than 90 combined yards in his last two games but the 49ers feel pretty confident they can slow him down. >> he doesn't like to slide, so you have to be ready to tackle him, he's going to try to get extra yards like a running back and we have to pressure him, i don't think many teams have got good pressure on him yet. >> every quarterback is good at running on the grain. we see how much you want to slide, so we will circle back sunday after the game. >> he just mentioned
