. fleet week. a navy veteran survived one of the most harrowing experiences of world war ii, sometimes the effort to survive itself can be an act of . >> the war was over it was the indianapolis, if you know what happened to that ship it is probably because of one scene in a very famous movie. >> reporter: an american flag flies over the home of harold brey. at 96, he is a patriotic
1:52 am
veteran. paintings and memorabilia from the only ship he ever sailed aboard. the uss indianapolis. it was 1945 and he was 17 and just left boot camp. >> when you shipped out did anybody have any idea that they were going to have this really important mission? >> it was just a trip out of maryland. took a bunch of kids and i was one of them. >> reporter: the ship left carrying a secret weapon. the most secret weapon of all. the first atomic bottom nicknamed little boy. >> i tell you what, i sat on the box. it was on the deck. >> you sat on the atomic bomb? >> yeah. >> reporter: the cargo was delivered safely but it is what happened afterwards that people remember the indianapolis for. all thanks to a gripping scene
1:53 am
in the movie "jaws." >> you were on the indianapolis? >> what happened? >> japanese submarine slammed two torpedoes into our side chief. 1100 men went into the water. the vessel went down in 12 minutes. >> i don't know how i got so lucky. i just hit the side and swam away from the ship. hollered for guys. i just happened to find a raft. and i got aboard, 18 guys on my raft, they were fighting each other for the room on the raft. i am not going there, i will hang on somebody hanging on to the raft. that is what i did. >> we formed ourselves in tight groups, lost 100 men. i don't know how many sharks, maybe 1,000, i don't know how many men >> it was a bad experience. there was nothing good about
1:54 am
it. every time you look around somebody was gone. the sharks, they were there. that was a terrible scene, sharks, seeing young guys that got attacked. >> out of a crew of nearly 1200, only 318 survived. because the mission was secret no distress signal was sent. they were in the water for five days when a plane happened to spot the men and they were picked up and taken to a hospital on guam. >> i was not hurt, i was not hurt at all but for memories. a lot of guys i helped in the water that were hurt. >> it has not been easy. harold says he thinks about it nearly every day. later he came home, became a police officer
1:55 am
and raised a family. his wife, stephanie, says he still never talked about it to anyone. >> when "jaws" came out, the movie, they were talking about it at the police department. he happened to be in the room heed i was on that ship. and that was the first, you know, that they ever knew. >> reporter: but then the survivors began planning reunions and it helped for them to be around people who truly understood. >> and healing, too, for them. because, they had been instructed by the navy go home and forget about it. don't even talk about it. his parents never knew. >> time, of course, has taken a toll on the crew. when a fellow shipmate passed away, harold became the sole remaining survivor. in july he was thanked for his service to his town & country with a life-size bronze statue of that young sailor fresh out of boot camp. >> do you feel like you are a
1:56 am
hero? >> no. >> i saved myself. i helped a lot of guys but, that was the thing to do. you live with them, and i did not do anything spectacular. >> reporter: my father fought in world war ii, like harold, he rarely talked about it. he said you did not talk about it because you don't know what the guy on the barstool next to you went through. i think he meant a guy like harold brey. >> the navy next asked him to sail again. to this day he is not comfortable on the water. he has been invited as a special guest for the fleet week parade of ships but he said he will stay on land to view it. as we send it over to paul on the virtual reality set, paul, if you are on the water or land it will be a good view because the weather will cooperate, of course, we have to be mindful of the heat the next couple of days. >> yes. warm, even at the
1:57 am
waterfront. the same system, certainly we respect his desire to stay on land it got him through the last 78 years it will get him through a little longer. the change in the weather that kicked in with the temperatures in upper 80s and 90s inland and 80s around the bay. we are going to see the temperatures continuing to warm up, again, tomorrow, and then hovering in place on friday before we back down on saturday. still, with all of that sunshine over head we will be in full electricity generation mode across the bay area. full capacity this time today and same on thursday with a backing off on friday with a touch of fog to begin the day. not having an impact by friday afternoon. more on that in a second. let's take a look at current temperatures, we are in the 60s and the 70s. later on tonight, that is when our temperatures back down to the lower to middle 60s. the coolest spots, dropping down to the upper 50s. above average,
1:58 am
we are at least cooling off. longer nighttime hours allow us to recover from the day time heat. speaking of which, take a look at the temperatures for tomorrow afternoon. reaching up into the middle 90s in the santa clara valley. maybe up in the lower 90s today. building on that tomorrow. temperatures in the 90s for fremont, temperatures half-moon bay, a degree or two warmer than today. maybe similar to where you were today. around 80 degrees or so. it is warm for folks without air-conditioning. 80s in oakland, they are not record setting, though, the records are in the 90s, 100 degrees and you will be in the lower 90s in the north bay and the east bay. the temperatures just are not exceptional for this time of the year, they are hot and above normal for this time of the year, though. let's take a look at what we will deal with in terms of the fire threat. the temperatures will be hot. the humidity levels are going to be pretty low. especially in the north bay mountains heading into tonight
1:59 am
and tomorrow morning, not much recovery to the humidity. it is usually what we expect overnight, the temperatures cooler, see the numbers, around 25%, when they are at the highest, then, humidity levels drop as the temperatures heat up. relative humidity levels in the 15-20% range for most inland parts of the bay area. low, but it is not critically low. you are not looking at off the charts fire threat, just something we have to monitor. not off of the charts because we will not have the gusty winds to go along with the low humidity values. let's take a look at the seven-day forecast. it is going to bring us into our extended time frame here. let's go with the seven-day outlook. showing the temperatures that will be hot as we head through the first half of the weekend with the temperatures reaching up into the middle 90s through saturday, inland, then, backing down as we hit the second half of the weekend and into early next week. it will be really very nice weather for the blue angels display. bayside, plenty of sunshine for friday and saturday, the one time, clouds
2:00 am
may come into play. it will be sunday. we are not having fun with this 3d stuff, and then we will have more cloud cover building in by monday and tuesday next week. outside chance of a couple of showers in the forecast by monday night into tuesday. it is only in the 30-40% range. best chance is north of the golden gate. something we will keep an eye on. enjoy the warmth. along the coast you don't get it often. >> i thought somebody was pushing like a cart through the studio because of the jet sound. >> you got to have sound effects to go with the fancy stuff. >> yes, just warn me next time, okay [ laughter ] i was ducking for cover. i was confused. okay. thank you, paul. people in the bay area reporting weird streaks in the sky. they have nothing to do with the blue angels or anything else with wings. try eight legs, vern? ahead, four baseball teams moving on in the playoffs. game plan day for the 49ers who have

2:05 am
different defenses on the road, at home, playoff games, when injured. he does, you can not do all of that stuff. he has been out there too long it is on tape. baseball, giants fans, rangers manager, bruce bochy, did he tell his players "finish him"? now, like in tampa, look what he did. hit a sixth inning rbi double. rangers took game one and eliminated the rays in game two, 7-1 the final in the best of three wild card round. next, is baltimore in the al divisional round. i am going to show you what paul heggen and our producer have in common. the twins kept it rolling on the bluejays, bases loaded fourth inning single here. opening up the scoring and kicked the door in. heggen and kennedy are huge twin fans, they have waited 21 years for minnesota to get a playoff series win and it

2:10 am
to 7gs today. >> what is the fastest you have flown? >> 120 knots is our nice comfortable speed in the blackhawk. it will be a lot faster for us. >> that is a little bit of a tease, we recorded her flight in 360. we will share that along with her reaction, i believe on friday. she kept her cool, though. >> sure. >> i did not. i am deathly afraid of flying. like in planes. >> i worked for another station, my producers made me come up with this when i flew with a stunt pilot ahead of the blue angels in corpus christi, texas several years ago, here it is. >> ready to go up. >> yeah. [ laughter ] >> [ screaming ] [ laughter ] [ screaming ]
