the drama. good morning. >> reporter: anne-marie, good morning. despite all that drama, the house is not in session with the interim speaker calling for a recess until both parties have had the chance to meet and talk about what's next. the pressure is on. the clock is ticking to find a new speaker and get to work with a new deadline looming to avoid a government shutdown. just days after house speaker kevin mccarthy was ousted, two top republicans, louisiana congressman and majority leader steve scalise and ohio congressman jim jordan, announced bids to replace him. >> we need to unite the conference. i think i can do that. >> two good friends. both would do great. >> reporter: mccarthy said he won't run, though others could jump in before next week's votes. now some angry house republicans are expressing their frustrations with florida congressman matt gaetz, leader of the charge against mccarthy,

and the seven gop lawmakers who joined to vote him out. >> he's the arsonist who lit the house on fire. >> gaetz faces of possibility of being kicked out. all eight may be kicked off committees. >> reporter: though gaetz is not backing down. >> the nerve of these establishment republicans to have to take a week to go have a good cry and then blame us for being the reason that we can't get the work done. >> reporter: north carolina congressman patrick mchenry is in as interim speaker, but the house is at a standstill until it elects a new speaker with another possible shutdown looming if congress doesn't act by november 17th. >> we cannot and should not again be faced with 11th hour decision, brinksmanship threatens to shut down the government. >> reporter: yesterday president biden called for an end to the poisonous atmosphere in washington. meantime, of course, we can't forget about the fierce battle for the republican presidential nomination and some top candidates have weighed in on this mess. former vice president mike pence

described the ousting as a distraction, and former president donald trump asked why republicans are always fighting amongst themselves. anne-marie, a lot to deal with in the party this morning. >> definitely. and nothing happening quickly. naomi ruchim in new york, thank you. so the fallout from the historic removal of the speaker of the house is impacting democratic leaders, as well. former house speaker nancy pelosi says she was told on tuesday to immediate vacate her capitol hideaway office by interim speaker patrick mchenry. former house majority leader steny hoyer was also evicted from his hideaway office. the offices are a perk for senior members. for the second day, tens of thousands of kaiser permanente workers plan to walk the picket line. the largest health care strike in american history. one of their biggest complaints understaffing, which they say hurts patient care.

jo ling kent reports. >> reporter: more than 75,000 workers at kaiser permanente walked out. >> we're taking care of lives. you know, health care workers should be valued. >> reporter: joining her on the picket lines, pharmacists, respiratory therapists, optometrists, and other technicians. the union is asking for better working conditions and a $25-an-hour minimum wage. kaiser has offered $21 to $23 an hour, just above what fast food workers will soon make in california. >> we have a lot of people who leave and are like why would i work here for the same pay that i can make at burger king or target, and not have to come in contact with infectious diseases. >> reporter: kaiser has a patient pool of nearly 13 million people, and more than 300,000 employees. its profit so far this year tops $3 billion. >> fighting for our patients -- >> reporter: in a message to patients kaiser said "our hospital's emergency departments and pharmacies will remain open. we may need to reschedule certain non-urgent appointments and procedures." the walkout began as negotiations intensify for unions striking in other

industries. autoworkers, culinary workers, and screen actors are all at the bargaining table. the economic impact has been profound. strikes around the country so far this year have meant a loss of nearly 7.5 million workdays, the most in a generation. what would you say to a kaiser executive right now? >> kaiser, do better. for your patients and for your employees. >> reporter: the nurse we just heard from there also tells me she thinks about quitting the job that she loves every day due to the current conditions. meantime, kaiser is acknowledging that five million health care workers across the industry have left since the beginning of the pandemic, and burnout is at a record high. jo ling kent, cbs news, los angeles. donald trump was back in court for the third straight day at his civil fraud trial in new york. the former president is accused of inflating the value of his properties and other assets to obtain favorable bank loans.

he could lose control of some of his new york properties. yesterday outside the court he called new york attorney general letitia james incompetent. james countered with this -- >> the donald trump show is over. this was nothing more than a political stunt, a fundraising stop. now we can continue going forward with our trial. >> trump returned to florida yesterday and is not expected back until he's called to testify later on this year. three philadelphia police officers are in stable condition after being shot as they responded to a domestic dispute involving a video game. authorities say a man started arguing with his 12-year-old son and the boy's uncle last night. he allegedly shot the uncle which led to the 911 call. when officers arrived, the father allegedly opened fire. he was killed in a shootout. the uncle was hospitalized in critical condition. baltimore police have

released new video in connection with tuesday's mass shooting at morgan state university. investigators are seeking the public's help in identifying the people seen in this video. police say at least two people opened fire during a dispute between two groups. five people including four students were injured. investigators do not believe they were the intended targets. no one has been arrested. classes and all homecoming events were canceled for the rest of the week. a memorial service will be held outside san francisco city hall today for the late california senator dianne feinstein. yesterday mourners paid their respects at the senator's flag-draped casket in the city hall rotunda. feinstein died last week at the age of 90. speakers at today's service include vice president kamala harris. the service is not open to the public for security reasons. coming up, new details in the indictment of senator bob menendez. a secret deadly car crash was revealed.

"the las vegas review journal" reports the man charged with murder in the 1996 shooter of rapper tupac shakur made his first court appearance. duane davis appeared in a las vegas courtroom yesterday. he's accused of providing the gun and orchestrating the drive-by shooting. it was allegedly in retaliation for a fight earlier that night involving shakur and davis' nephew. in 2018, davis admitted that he was involved in the shooting in a series of interviews. "the boston globe" says the baby of a pregnant woman who was shot on a bus in massachusetts died after being delivered at a hospital. the woman was riding on the bus yesterday in holyoke about 90 miles west of boston when she was shot. she was taken to the hospital in critical condition. police say she was caught in the crossfire of a shooting involving three male suspects. officials say the men were taken to the hospital and are now in custody. and "the clarion ledger"
