from cbs news bay area, this is the afternoon edition. it is a first alert weather day here in the bay area and a heat advisory will impact many of us into our friday forecast. more on that in just a bit. today, we pay tribute to a trailblazer. senator dianne feinstein paved the way for so many in politics and guided so many leaders right here in the bay area. >> she showed us a world where women lead, where we lift each other up so that girls like me could follow in her footsteps. >> simply put, she was a force.

>> she certainly was. i'm elizabeth cook. it was the final farewell to the late senator dianne feinstein in san francisco today. the city where she grew up and began her storied career of political service. dignitaries and the community alike celebrating her life and legacy. anne makovec joins me now with more on all this. >> a touching tribute to a life well lived. a life of service to the city of san francisco, to california, and to the country as a hole . that was reflected in the turnout today. the ceremony was going to be open to the public but it was closed because they needed to tighten up security. there were a number of dignitaries in attendance, among them, vice president kamala harris and speaker emeritus nancy pelosi. all of them speaking of dianne feinstein as a friend and a politician who led with integrity. >> as a public servant, dianne had the courage to take on the many tough fights, even when

she was faced with fierce opposition and political peril and, especially when her work was in defense of the constitution. and, the security of the american people. dianne commanded respect and she gave respect. she was a serious and gracious person who welcomed debate and discussion but always required that it would be well informed and studied. >> the ability to win over doubters and detractors and there were many. not by putting them down but with her elegance, poise, and piercing wit . >> san francisco was always dianne feinstein's true home. same as's cable cars, led the city out of the dark days and

lit up. 39. mayor london breed talked about what she meant to the city. >> through times of tragedy and triumph, dianne feinstein showed us the meaning of san francisco's model, gold and peace, iron in war. girls like me could follow in her footsteps. she showed us strength and grace, courage and collaboration. like the old saying goes, you only live once. if you do it right, once is enough. dianne feinstein did it right. >> before today's memorial service, the blue angels flew over san francisco city hall . it was a fitting tribute to the woman who brought fleet week to the bay back in 1981. they did a couple more loops during the

ceremony and sometimes it seemed like it was right on cue. >> she walked onto that floor last thursday , which would be her last day. she walked onto the floor and voted to advance legislation to keep government open for the people. >> this is just the beginning. fleet week is dedicated to dianne . flyovers all weekend. she would like it like that. >> we also heard a tribute to dianne feinstein from her daughter eileen. >> to my grandmother, i promise to always work to my long suit, to earn my spurs, to keep going no matter what, and to never forget my black pantsuit. your

family loves you. we are so proud of you. we miss you and you will always, always be my sunshine. >> that black pantsuit quick was because her grandma always told her to have one with her because there is no place you can't wear one. one of many pieces of advice, the memories, the institutions that will live on because of dianne feinstein. >> always have your black pantsuit because you never know when you will need it. >> thank you so much. the san francisco girls chorus performed at today's memorial for dianne feinstein, ending the ceremony with this very fitting song. >> ♪

>> a final farewell to a champion for san francisco and beyond. looking like that capitol hill, the senate is not in session and service of the memorial for dianne feinstein but , as you saw, many senators from both sides of the aisle were at the ceremony in san francisco to honor their friend and colleague. up to 30 senators were there. >> we brought you the memorial service for senator feinstein live on cbs news bay area and we posted clips on our website, www.kpix.com along with a special section on her life and legacy in political office. our other top story today, the heat . it is a first alert weather day and we are feeling the higher temperatures from san francisco inland and to the south bay. meteorologist jessica burch on how long this

will last. >> it is a first alert weather day for many of us in the bay area as we are under a heat advisory . as for the highlighted county on this map as we zoom in closer, take a look at what is happening. we are expecting daytime highs close to the triple digits in certain pockets of the bay area. that is due to high pressure just off shore, kind of creating a heat dome for the next couple of days. take it slow, drink lots of water. we are also getting an offshore wind thanks to the area of high pressure. that clears up the sky. we will be seeing sunny skies and that is perfect to kickoff the airshow for fleet week. we are expecting 70s by sunday. one person has died in a stabbing in union city. it happened this morning at tropics mobile home park. police say there were three big rooms, one was pronounced dead at the scene, two others were taken to the hospital. they are

expected to survive. the suspect is 21-year-old carlos daniel hernandez. he was arrested in mountain view. the motive for the stabbing is unclear at this point. we are expecting an update from union city police this afternoon. a suspect in san francisco has been arrested in the death of a store clerk. police say a thief attacked him with his baseball bat back in august and the richmond district. he died a few days later. now, the suspect faces charges including murder and robbery. de la rosa was arrested in hollister yesterday. thousands of kaiser workers are back on the picket line for the second day of their three-day strike. kaiser told us it has reached a tentative deal on wages and benefits and there are still some other issues to work out. we know chase center as the home of the golden state warriors. today, the wnba announced it is coming here too. the bay area was just awarded an expansion team that will start here in 2025.

>> the bay area is firmly aligned with our already strong base. this is a hub for women's sports. >> all the employees of our organization say when are we getting a wnba team. this is the right place to do it . it was the right place and it is now the right time. >> warriors chairman made a big prediction, saying the bay area will win a wnba championship in the first five years of this new franchise. no name for the new team yet but we know they will be headquartered in oakland and play their home games at chase center in san francisco. members of the dubs are excited for this new move as well. >> i just want to welcome the wnba to the bay area. looking forward to having you all. can't wait to see you all thrive. >> just want to welcome the wnba to the bay. so excited. can't wait for the ladies to

every fleet week , thousands of people flock to san francisco's waterfront to watch the airshows, go and ship tours and enjoy other activities. local businesses see a huge boost. this year, the potential government shutdown almost put that in jeopardy. lucky for those businesses, fleet week is ago. now, they're getting ready to cash in on the crowds. >> this time last week, business owners were bracing for the possibility that fleet week might not happen because of a possible government shutdown. when lawmakers came to an agreement, that put fleet week back on track and that meant business owners here could prepare for what is typically a huge week for their

bottom lines. >> in the days before the blue angel roared above the sky, the sound of the sizzle coming from the laptop grew louder and louder there will be a line this weekend out the door to the embarcadero and the laptop will be full of burgers. >> i love the help, the teamwork. >> she owns a red's job a house, a staple of the embarcadero. given the location, reds has a front row seat to fleet week at the uss john p murtha. >> i look forward to this every year. >> first and foremost, she loves celebrating our servicemembers. >> it is a big week for her business. >> while she has learned how to

roll with the punches, she was not thrilled last week when she learned the government shutdown would result in a seriously watered-down fleet week. >> it is something that we count on every year and then, this year, we may not have been able to have it and there is nothing we could have done. >> it would have cost the city millions of dollars. >> reporter: the president and ceo of sf travel is relieved that did not happen. >> up to 1 million people come to the bay area. whether they are looking at the airshow were doing something else, it generates over $10 million. >> i had talked to a bunch of small businesses that were really concerned. they were counting on this we can to produce revenue for them. >> the embarcadero will be jampacked. >> fleet week in full force is not just a win for businesses but a much-needed win for the city. >> we need some positive exposure to the city. we need to get people coming back into san francisco, wanting to visit here, wanting to feel safe and

tomorrow, we will bring you the parade of ships live at 11:00 a.m. followed by the blue angels live at 3:00. as we celebrate hispanic heritage month, we are looking at what latinos have done in baseball. within the giants organization alone, a number of players had impressive seasons. it is not an easy journey to get to the big leagues. we sat down with estrada to talk about leaving home and becoming a familiar name for fans. >> when you attend a giants game at oracle park, you can hear estrada's name to be called. then, you hear the

song. it is bad bunny. he says as soon as the first inning gets underway, the parties starts. estrada met with us in the dugout before a home game in his white and orange nikes. he told us he loves shoes. he is charismatic but, most importantly, humble. he has had a great team this year. when he posts his highlights on instagram, the caption is a town in venezuela where he grew up and a place where his love for baseball started. but, his skills were noticed. >> [ speaking in a global language ] >> he was signed by the yankees and made his major-league debut

in 2019. he joined the giants in 2021. he says it is a place that has allowed him to showcase his talent. fans recognize his name but getting to this level in his career has not been easy. players coming from other countries face challenges we may not always think about. >> [ speaking in a global language ] >> he has fought hard to be here. >> [ speaking in a global language ] >> he just earned the willie mack award, an annual honor given to the most inspirational player on the team. now uses the blessings in his life to give back to the place he grew up and to be an example for kids growing up wanting to be a professional baseball player. the willie mack award is voted on by giants players, club personnel and fans. by the way,

wilmer flores won the award last year. >> you can find more of our hispanic heritage stories all month long on our website, www.kpix.com. it is a first alert weather day. the heat is on all over the bay area and so is the threat of fire. meteorologist jessica burch is tracking it all from our virtual view studio. >> the national weather service has issued a heat advisory for many of us down in the south bay, ranging to the city of san francisco. here is the reason why. high-pressure starting to build its way in. this is a friendly reminder now to start drinking lots of water and taking care of your skin because this will create some sunny skies ahead of us and an offshore wind that will help clear up the skies. we will have sunny conditions with the offshore breeze. with that in mind, keep an eye on the fire threat. starts to increase as we see the winds push offshore. let's take it a step back. this

is what we will be looking at, starting up in the north bay. our daytime highs are starting to be well above average. we are talking about 90 throughout the north bay from napa over into santa rosa. here we go into san francisco. 80s expected for us. upper 80s, close to 90. i would not be shocked if some areas hit the 90s this afternoon. all the way down into the santa clara valley, we are warming up to 96 degrees today. this is one of the warmest days we have seen so far . this is something to take note of, take it slow. this is summerlike weather in the first couple of months of fall. we are expecting 93 degrees today in antioch. this heatwave will last for a little bit longer. get prepared for it, start hydrating. we start to cool down, 80s as early as sunday . right around the corner, we will feel that cool down but for now, it will be a

warm one. for everyone heading out to the fleet week event, the airshow is right around the corner. friday, saturday, heading into sunday, here is the good news. even though it will be a warm one for us, we are expecting 80s in the forecast with lots of sunshine which means great conditions for the blue angels to fly directly over us.

let's look live at levi's stadium right now where, come sunday, the 49ers will go for their 15th straight regular-season win. it is no small feat and vern glenn says that would tie a franchise record set back in 1990. >> this is the volkswagen red and gold report. the 49ers and cowboys will renew the rivalry -- their rivalry saturday night. about the head coach? >> we are aware of the rivalry and the history. besides that , it is what we thought. >> what will christian mccaffrey have in store this week? he was named the nfc player of the week for the second time this season after he scored four touchdowns against the cardinals. the 49ers' start has got the attention of the 49ers owner, jerry jones.

when you talk about fleet week, you probably think about the blue angels and the big military ships but there is also great music coming our

way. for the past three months, concord high school band and guard have been practicing for fleet week 's high school band challenge. it is the first year competing in it. they will have 20 minutes to wow the judges with their routine and they know it will be tough as they go up against last year's champs and their biggest rivals. the competition kicks off on monday at 10:00 a.m. at olden gate park. it is really fun. ryan yamamoto emceed it last year and it was a fun day. local news continues on our ♪ ♪ >> norah: tonight, construction of the border wall will soon resume after the biden administration's major reversal, waving dozens of federal laws to
