. now at 11:00, some of the most powerful people in the country gather in the bay area to remember the late senator dianne feinstein. we look at the heart of a problem a short walk away from san francisco city hall. >> it is hard because i grew up here. this is like my baby. >> she wanted to be a part of the change in her east bay community. now, she is being forced to walk away from her childhood dream. it is being called the air bnb story from hell. why a california man says a woman will not leave his rental until he pays her tens of thousands of dollars.

hello, i'm sara donchey. it is a big week for the city of san francisco. we are hours away from the first fleet week air show. we saw them soring across the bay area to get them ready. some of the most powerful people in washington were here today to remember senator dianne feinstein. vice president harris, chuck schumer, nancy pelosi were here on civic center. the city has, once again, tried to put on its best face. steps away from where they all met with their security details in toe we spotted this, this morning, park rangers clearing people off of the sidewalk and this, piles of trash littered all over the sidewalks. mountains of trash is what some people in the tenderloin learned to live with day in and day out. there ari team of people who pick up

the trash to come just hours later with the mess. at times it felt like our efforts are for none. we will go through the block and dump it right back out on us. it almost seems like it is a thankless and effortless job, right? i mean, look at it. >> daybreak in the tinder loin, his job does not so much get under way as it picks up where it left off. >> the trash is all over the place. it is enormous. >> reporter: he is operation for the tenderloin district just one of the groups mobilized against this neighborhood's trash. >> we do pressure washing, graffiti removal, trash pick ups, we do, you know, loose garbage, debris. pan and broom. >> reporter: on other corner, public works crews are starting

their day. >> you have animals and pets and pedestrians and all of that. >> reporter: al, a city native, gets up every morning and by hand take on a wave of trash so relentless that it can overwhelm city storm drains. >> especially during the rainy season. all of this debris can go ahead and flow down to the catch bas ins. how much trash? over the week of september 22nd, the crews collected more than 36,000 pounds of it in the tender loin. more than 18 tons. that soonl what public works crews hauled away. does not include what was picked up by the cbd or others. it is just one average week. the trash never stops >> absolutely. continuous. >> so, we try to work with everybody that we possibly can. a group effort to keep this place clean. not one agency, not 10.. >> the garbage it is just way too much. everyone that eats

something, the first thing they do is throw it on the floor. >> every single day they have a mess over here. >> reporter: any given block you can find residents putting up their own fight and the city says it is trying to stop some of the trash inflow with out reach to others that may be piling on the problem without knowing it. >> residents that live in single room occupancy hotels where there might not be garb an service for them. some of the people try to do the right thing by putting their garbage in bags, tieing it up, putting it out by a public can hoping it gets picked up. what happens then, people come through at night or some time during the day. open the bag, spread the garbage everywhere. >> it is the beginning of what will be a long-range project to get away from dirt and litter and debris. >> reporter: residents kick off an antilitter campaign. in 1984 the trash is a generation spanning problem here just like

the larger issues facing the neighborhood. all of these things cross paths. for the people that are trying to keep the sidewalks clean, they are right in the middle of all of it. >> somebody sleeping over there. we will not go disturb them and just move it. >> reporter: some public works crews are tied to resolution teams that involve determining the legal number of bicycles someone can have on a sidewalk and making sure batteries and other kinds of hazardous waste do not go out with the trash. but, every cleaning crew works around similar issues and in this case someone claiming what looks like trash as their belongings. >> there is nothing we can do. we respect their wishes, she said that is hers so we can not clean it up >> it is complicated. very complicated. it is, it is just, it is what the tenderloin is right now. hopefully we, we are all here together to make it better >> being brought up here in the city and everything. for me, it

is not work. it is more personal than that. so, i go about my day and go home and feel like i put in a good day's work. and keeps me satisfied and going. >> if you ever walk through the tenderloin you have seen them out here doing the very dirty work. we would not even want to show you everything that they clean up out here imagine what things would look like if they were not doing it. out cleaning up sidewalks that likely will be covered again, maybe within hours. the workers who keep picking away at the trash that never stops. all right, an incredibly warm day across the bay area today. a beautiful day, though. paul heggen in our virtual reality studio tracking it for us, paul? >> >> the warmest day of the year so far. the heat advisory continues for areas around the

bay, down the peninsula and the santa cruz mountains, what a heat advisory means it is a moderate heat, are people with sensitivity may have issues during the hottest part of the day if they lack access to air-conditioning, something that say concern within san francisco. it was hot today. let's take a look at where we topped out. it was significantly above average. up to 95 degrees in san jose. not even quite to 90 degrees. you will be in the 90s tomorrow with much of the rest of the bay area. the temperature climbed all of the way up to 90 degrees at the airport in half-moon bay, downtown half-moon bay, down the coast, only 80. a lot of variability in the coastal regions, temperatures in oakland, made it up into the neighborhood of 90 degrees and the temperatures inland to the north bay. all of the way up to 96 degrees in napa on the hot spot. santa rosa and 95 degrees, the temperatures similar if not a degree or two tomorrow. let's take a look at where we will

top out. we will be a good 15-20 degrees above average. climate change has a fingerprint on this. we can have the climate shift index. the orange shaded areas along the bay and the coast, the temperatures reaching into the 80s around 90 degrees, that kind of heat, this time of the year it is made twice as likely by the impact of human caused climate change. we will take a look at how long it will last. it will not be all that long coming up in the full forecast. >> we look forward to that, thank you very much. as we mentioned a few moments ago, many friends, loved ones and some of the most powerful people in washington came together in downtown san francisco today to remember the life and incredible legacy of the late senator dianne feinstein. she made her mark on city politics here in san francisco and forged a long career in the senate. we went to city hall to talk to the famous face that she considered close personal friends. >> reporter: they came to say

good-bye to a woman who broke glass ceilings in the political world. >> millions of girls my age and long after me have grown blistfully free of the yokes our grandmothers wore because dianne feinstein wrestled them off. >> reporter: long time colleague and former u.s. senator from california barbara boxer and the late senator feinstein paved the way for women to follow in their footsteps, feinstein's began in the city by the way. >> san francisco was the place that believed in her. >> reporter: feinstein's roots made their way to the nation's capitol as their command in negotiating rooms had an impocket younger generation of political powers including the vice president. >> in that room there was give and take. substantive debate and problem solving. and, that, was dianne. >> house speaker pelosi talked about her personal touch.

. owning a home in california is very expensive. especially in big cities like san francisco and los angeles. and more and more we have seen people list their homes as short term rentals on sites like air bnb as a way to earn extra cash, off set the mortgage. a southern california man thought it would be a good idea but turned into a two year

nightmare after his tenant stopped paying rent but refuses to leave. he claims she is trying to shake him down for $100,000 in exchange for leaving his multimillion dollar property. the homeowner says his tenant booked a stay back in september of 2021. he says five months later he noticed water damage in the guesthouse where she was staying, his tenant would not let him fix it and then stopped paying the rent. >> i even said to her, okay, you can stay another two weeks, at no cost just so you can relocate yourself. then she squatted and has never left. >> you have not gotten any rent since then? >> nothing. we just keep all of the curtains closed. literally 8 feet away from the main house. >> the tenant wrote in an email to the owner she did not feel safe being forced to vacate. the homeowner's lawyer said she asked for $100,000 to leave. now, the tenant's attorney says the owner launched a smear campaign against his client.

the homeowner is hoping he can get it settled in court sometime soon. a business owner in oakland says it was her lifelong dream to open up shop where she grew up. so, that is what the chef did. she worked her way up from cooking meals at home to opening magnolia wine street lounge and kitchen in west oakland. now she says she has no choice but to walk away from her dream and close. >> the chef named her restaurant magnolia street wine lounge and kitchen after the street of her childhood home >> it is hard because i grew up here. so, this is like my baby. >> reporter: the chef learned how to cook from both of her grandmothers and serves up dishes seoul food with an asian twist. she says just in the last year her business plummeted. her sales are a third of what they used to be.

>> i think things started declining maybe about six months ago. and it was like, oh, okay. it is friday. you know, we are not even like, no one is coming for fish fry friday, what is going on? >> reporter: with a following of loyal customers she tried to hang on for as long as she could. >> we should of closed probably two months ago. and i didn't because i wanted to see if it would turn itself around. >> reporter: but in the end she says crime in oakland drove her customers away. >> my patrons do not feel safe. not necessarily not safe coming here but they don't feel safe coming to oakland. >> reporter: while the chef still has a successful catering business, she was hoping to be part of the change to revive oakland. >> there is a rich history of culture and music that we are trying to bring back and we

can't because it is like i always say, oakland i love you but you don't love me. >> reporter: the chef says for the first time in her life she feels unsafe in oakland. she hopes city leaders can make concrete changes to bring back the oakland she used to know. >> it is like a zombie apocalypse around here. it is frustrating t is frustrating the police can not police, it is frustrating we have a d. a. that does not prosecute, frustrating we have a mayor that i don't know what she doing. >> reporter: the chef has not ruled out opening her restaurant again in the future. she says unfortunately, it just won't be in oakland. >> i am sad overall. not necessarily for my business but i am sad about that, too, but i am mostly sad for oakland and, and what it was, what it should and be what it could be. all right, turning now to our first alert forecast. paul did warn us it was going to be

a hot one out there. paul, you definitely delivered. and, you know what? no complaints, it was a beautiful day to watch the blue angels practice. snow more of the same tomorrow. should be clear skies over head for the first official display on friday afternoon. you can watch it right here on kpix as well. look at the big picture pattern, the reason before the hot weather is the heat dome. high pressure, it is camped out nearby. the position about it, everything kicks in off shore winds in the atmosphere above our heads, pushing it not only into inland parts of the bay area but to around the bay and along the coast. that is why we had the warm even hot temperatures along the coast the heat will peak tomorrow inland and then it starts to back down. by next week, a different pattern taking over as an early autumn storm system, sending most of the energy and moisture to our north. we will see more clouds on monday and even a chance of showers late monday into monday night. in the short term,

though, if you have solarpanels they will soak up plenty of sunshine. a tiny bit of fog to start the day on saturday knocking the numbers down a little. we will be in full capacity, basically, for the first part of the weekend and sunday as well. hint of fog on the horizon, temperatures are backing down in san jose, 72 degrees for downtown san francisco. there are plenty of spots dropping down to the 60s. we will see a mix of 50s and 60s. we get more time for the heat building up during the day to escape off to the space. the temperatures are going to warm back up, let's take a look at how high we are going to go. it will be hot. 95, 98 degrees in morgan hill, that will be the hot spot for the bay area, lower 90s for fremont and redwood city. 80 degrees for downtown half-moon bay. the airport may get hotter because of the way the geography works there. 90s in east bay. a degree or two cooler than

today. still close to 90 degrees and lower to middle 90s will be widespread inland in the north bay once again. these temperatures, while they are going to be well above normal, there are only a couple spots that are more likely to approach record territory. one of those is san jose, forecast high, 96 degrees, record high of 95. otherwise, three plus degrees away from record territory tomorrow and likely a similar pattern on saturday. approaching record territory but an jose is the one spot that is more likely to actually reach a record tying high temperature of 94 degrees. let's take a look at the seven-day forecast, we are going to see inland heat peaks over the next couple of days. in the 80s on sunday, down into the 70s for a couple of days by monday and tuesday with a chance of light rain showers, north of the golden gate and the bay. the temperatures around the bay will follow a similar pattern. we will see temperatures peaking around the bay as we head into tomorrow afternoon, close to 90 degrees.

just having fun ahead of the air show. hopefully you got a chance to see them today. even if you did not see them you probably heard them. here at kpix we rushed to the roof of our building in downtown san francisco to catch a glimpse. >> that is what it sounded like. the angels flew on and off from 1:00 this afternoon to almost 5:00. that was with another really big event happening in downtown san francisco which we told you about earlier, the memorial service of course for late senator feinstein, in fact, at one point, the blue angels kind of interrupted. >> and then years later -- it is what dianne wants, that is what we get. >> show stopping. we told you about one of our team members that got to fly with the blue angels, so cool, everyone is jealous. jessica went up for a
