in saturday's terror attack. of the 700 israelis killed, 260 were attending a music festival near the border. hamas claims to hold more than 100 people hostage. the "wall street journal" citing senior members of hamas and hezbollah says iran helped plan the coordinated strike. naomi ruchim is in new york with the latest. >> reporter: good morning. we are learning more about how hamas may have been able to orchestrate such an unprecedented ambush on israel over the weekend. the "wall street journal" is reporting that iranian security officials helped hamas plan the surprise attack. while u.s. officials are not confirming the report, the "journal" reports the green light was given at a making in beirut last week making way for the scores of atrocities in the region, and now more than 1,000 people dead on both sides. the night sky over gaza glowed orange as israel launched more air strikes overnight.

[ applause ] >> reporter: politically, republicans continue to attack the biden administration over the august prisoner swap deal that unfroze $6 billion in iranian funds, an ally of the hamas terror group. >> to think that they're not moving money around is irresponsible to say that to the american people. >> reporter: biden administration officials say those funds have not been used

putting people through. >> barricades were put in place to prevent violence. some major u.s. airlines are suspending flights to tel aviv as the fighting rages on in israel. the airlines include united, delta, and american. the airlines normally run direct services to tel aviv from major cities like new york and miami. united said they are suspending services until conditions allow them to resume. air france and cafe pacific are also canceling flights to tel aviv. on capitol hill, there is growing pressure to elect a new house speaker following the attack on israel. lawmakers return to washington this week, but they are no closer to agreeing on who will lead the house after kevin mccarthy was ousted. skyler henry reports. >> reporter: a somewhat paralyzed congress is under scrutiny with no permanent house speaker and a growing list of both domestic and international crises unfolding. >> it wasn't my idea to oust the speaker.

i thought it was dangerous. you know, i look at the world and all the threats that are out there, and what kind of message are we sending to our adversaries when we can't govern? >> reporter: a speaker vacancy means the house can't do its work, including proposed measures to send emergency funding to aid in israel's fight against hamas militants. lawmakers returned to the hill with the speaker vote expected this week. over the weekend, endorsements rolled in for the two republicans looking to earn the speakership. ohio congressman jim jordan and house majority leader steve scalise of louisiana. >> it's my hope that our republican colleagues get their act together, can settle on a speaker who can receive 217 votes, and that we can move forward to get the business of the american people done. >> reporter: and time is running out. so is funding to aid ukraine in the war against russia. hard-line conservatives say additionalal support i is a non-starter, and they want a house speaker that will continue

"reuters" reports an american climber and a nepalese sherpa guide were killed when two avalanches hits a mountain in tibet, according to chinese state media. american anna gutu was -- and the guide were on the mountain with more than 50 other climbers saturday when the avalanches struck. another american mountaineer and guide are missing. one guide was seriously injured.

the 26,000-foot mountain is the 14th highest mountain in the world.
