from cbs news bay area, this is the afternoon edition. israel now at war after the deadliest attack in decades by hamas. civilians killed, hostages taken. now the global community, including the bay area, is expressing outrage over the escalating conflict. i'm elizabeth cook. the death toll surpassed 1500 and israeli embassy spokesperson says at least 900 israelis have been killed. more than 600 palestinians are also dead. israel has ordered a complete

siege of the gaza strip where civilians and soldiers are leld hostage. the u.s. announced a number of americans were also killed in the violence and some are still unaccounted for. skyler henry begins our coverage from washington. >> reporter: good to be with you. the president put out a statement not long ago ultimately directing his team to work with their israeli counterparts on every aspect of what we now know is a hostage crisis that could include american citizens that are held captive. that also includes sharing intelligence and deploying experts from across the united states government to consult, again, with their israeli counterparts. the other question, resources, how much can be sent to israel, especially given what is happening on capitol hill in there is a paralyzed congress with no house speaker. >> reporter: israel says it largely regained control of the border communities as it bounds

the gaza strip with strikes for saturday's bloody attack. israel's defense minister says no food, water or fuel will be allowed in gaza where hamas is holding hostages, 100 and it is threatening to begin executions. among the captives is an 85-year-old grandmother paraded through the streets of gaza. >> i am sure she is very scared. and i am sure she feels very alone. >> reporter: the u.s state department now believes americans may be among the hostages. >> just given the sheer numbers involved we expect there may be americans caught up in the hostage taking as well. >> reporter: in addition to those missing the u.s. officials confirm 11 american citizens were killed in the attack. president biden said all countries must stand united against the atrocities. >> reporter: the republican senator gram says iran was complicate and israel must strike back. >> no more proportional response. the goal of the

israeli military should be to destroy hamas in gaza. >> reporter: america's most advanced aircraft carrier is moving towards the region as israel confronts shock and grief. this man was at a music festival where more than 100 died. >> they did not care if you are man or woman, young or old man, killers, murders, what they did can never be forgiven. >> reporter: even as the death toll rises into the hundreds, hamas continues to fire rockets into the border. and, israel called up hundreds of thousands of reservists preparing for the next stage of war.. >> reporter: domestically speaking the president said federal law enforcement agencies across the country are working together, monitoring any potential domestic threats here in the united states. also on the international front a growing list of u.s. airlines are suspending flights to israel given this conflict, the

condemns hamas for kidnapping men and women. san francisco city hall was lit up with blue lights in solidarity with israel overnight. on the sidewalk, a small group lit candles in the shape of the star of david for a vigil for the people of israel. earlier in the day, tensions were high in san francisco between two groups representing opposing views on this conflict. betty yu was there. >> reporter: dueling demonstrators faced off outside of the israeli consulate in downtown on sunday. >> resistance is justified. >> reporter: over violence in israel. the pro-palestinian rally called all out for palestine. comes one day after hamas launched a surprise attack that killed hundreds. >> i am ashamed of what israel is doing to the people of

palestine. i was in palestine a month ago. i saw for myself how the palestinian people are being addressed. >> reporter: he held a sign that red jews for palestinian liberation. protesters carrying signs and flags on both side yelled free palestine and free israel. sfpd officers in riot gear and barriers kept the two groups separate as tensions rose. >> what do you think of there surprise attack that happened on saturday? >> you know, violence will not solve anything. but when a people are oppressed and how can you blame them? you know, plane of us have been shamed. palestinians are going to rise up. they are not going to -- you can not expect them to sit

on their hands. >> reporter: san francisco resident jake connor said he wanted to show support for his jewish friends. >> it is terrible. no reason why anyone who should be out vacationing having a party should be kidnapped and rained and murdered and beaten. shocking. it is a fact that we are still arguing jewish existence in 2023 it is shocking to me.. [indiscernible] . >> reporter: both sides marched in different directions, following the rival rallies. >> the unfortunate thing, if we moved forward they would have to resolve the problems, first. obviously out here you can see there are two different degrees of ager and frustration. >> a lot of shouting going on. what would you like to tell that side? >> what i would like to tell them is our jewish tradition is one of peace. it is one of

co-existence. we will only have peace when we respect the rights of all human beings. >> reporter: and the jewish community relations council of the bay area held a series of events last night. hundreds turned out to this one in san rafael. showing solcareity and pray for peace. -- solidarity and pray for peace. prominent san francisco owner and activist from manny's restaurants is in israel now. he describes the attack during the country's holy celebrations. >> the sirens hit. i remember seeing all of the adults, you know, physically cover the kids with their bod tow protect them. and, a lot of the jews that were in the synagogue at the time started singing as loud as they could to drowned out the sound of the sirens to keep the kids from being afraid. and in moments like that, i mean, it is very surreal. it is, it is hard to actually feel anything. i went

outside to the patio and i basically lost it. i started crying and i saw within viewing distance, maybe, just a few miles away the result of a missile hitting some target and a giant plume of smoke. it feels like a war zone. major airlines canceled flights in and out of the country out of security country. -- manny is hoping to come home soon. a bay area native managed to fly back into california in the wake of unrest. she now plays basketball there. she described the mood there on the ground and on the plane as she was getting out. >> the flight was like, again, overcome with emotions. i kept saying until i was an hour or two out of israeli airspace. the flight before my flight took off they were bombing the airport. it is very different. this is my fifth season in israel. i have been here for a

. catching you up on a cable car coming to a sudden stop causing them to lunge forward the cable car was almost down the hill on washington street near taylor when the operator noticed a passenger vehicle in the intersection. they used the emergency brake and avoided

hitting the car. a truck responded to the scene in all 14 people were evaluated. a fire damaged two homes in concord today. the shopper caught the damage from above. it looks like the fire started in the garage of one of those homes. no word on any injuries. . a celebration for indifnlg indigenous people's day. there were vendors selling handmade jewelry and art. also in san francisco a winner has been announced for fleet week annual high school band challenge. >> the winner is concord high school? [ cheers and applause ] >> that is fantastic! they take the prize at golden gate park band show. a few students

claimed the trovey and their $10,000 prize. this was the school's first time at the event. they beat their rival and last year's champion pittsburg high school. we caught up with them during one of their practices right before the event. they told us they had been practicing during zero period. every tuesday and thursday for 12 hours. the rivalry between concord and pittsburgh goes back years.. -- between pittsburg goes back years >> they were bringing their a game. as we got closer to the event they can feel the pressure of, you know, making sure that we perform our best. >> they did. they rose to the challenge. the prize money from the high school band challenge goes towards supporting local school music programs. a minnesota farmer now holds bragging rights for growing the largest pumpkin in world history. the record setting heavyweight was crowned today at the 58th annual heavyweight championship in half-moon bay.

>> i will hit the switch right now. >> way to go! this gigantic pumpkin flamed michael jordan weighed in at a whopping 2,749 pounds. squashing the previous world record set two years ago in italy by 47 pounds. grower and defending champ said he named the pumpkin after jordan because his former jersey number 23 meshes nicely with the year 2023. he hauled his gourd on a 33 hour road trip. >> it started out basketball round, okay. believe it or not. it is definitely not basketball round right now. >> can you imagine driving alongside that truck with that giant pumpkin wondering, is that real? that can not be

half-moon bay, measuring and weighing pumpkins today. did not get measurable rain. a lot of people felt a drop or two of rain. not enough to measure. we got a little bit of measurable rain. go north. take a look at santa rosa up in the north bay. one place we got measurable 1/100th of an inch of rain. let's switch or perspective. go to the wide view. a weak system coming tomorrow, another chance of rain, so, what i want to do now is look at it differently. and put the forecast on here for each part of the bay. the percent chance you are going to get rain. the percent of precipitation. call these pops. and, the numbers are about 30%. take a look across the bay here. in the south bay, 30% chance of rain. we can follow that trend as we go either inland or back up north and we don't see significant deviation from that. we are going to look at the high-resolution future cast in a second. in addition

to showing you what the percent chances are for your part of the bay to get some rain, we are going to track this line of showers in a moment. i will show you what it looks like before we get to that. chance of rain furthermore, day time highs are not budging. how it felt today, that is how it will be tomorrow. a lot of upper 60s on here. let's get into some of the detail on how the system will come together for us. the best way to do that is to bring back in the live updating radar first. we say good-bye to the system from today. just really not much left to this. when we watch the future cast, a few drops, not much accumulation to go. so, i am going to skip ahead. now, we will look at tuesday into wednesday. watch the time up there. that starts as we get into tomorrow morning. and i am going to bring the line of showers across the bay. and, this is pretty much from noon until about 6:00 in the evening. starts in the north bay around

1:00. gets down to the south bay. by the time we got 7:00, 8:00, it pretty much cleared that is it. that is our chance for rain tomorrow. it probably will be identical to today. you got a 30% chance of rain. those are fairly low odds. most likely does not necessarily turn into a lot for us. so, let's get into the seven-day forecast. we will see what is coming next. starting out with our microclimates, drop of rain on here for tuesday. that was the system we were talking about. if you go beyond that, a little bit of a warm up, lower 80s by the time we get towards the end of the week. another system back here on saturday. it is going to try and come to the bay. the pacific it is just throwing systems right now towards the west coast. they are just going too far north for us to have a high degree of confidence. getting the rain out of it. you will see on saturday, the temperatures coming down a little bit. none of it impressive enough to get
